  • The Best Watches In The World ? A Lange & Söhne - Ultimate Luxury
    In this episode of Federico Talks Watches I talk about what might be the best luxury watch brand in the world, A. Lange & Söhne. A German brand from Glashutte, they seem to do things one step above every other luxury watch brand out their. Movement finishing, detailing and overall quality is top notch. Some compare them to Patek Philippe. I personally think they are one step above Patek as well.

    I am very lucky to own two Lange watches. These guys are on a different level. The finishing we all know is faultless, but also the accuracy. Both watches are around 1 second out a week!!!

    I agree with you Federico. People commonly think Patek makes the "best" watches, but purely from mechanics / finishing point of view, I reckon Lange tops Patek. As much as I love Patek, I think the modern Patek watches are 70% fluff (clever marketing and quantity control) and 30% substance.

      @misteratoz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'll preface this by saying I prefer Lange myself BUT....I think you're wrong.
      There are a variety of ways you measure greatness. From a technical stand point, Patek's watches are thinner and smaller diameter for the same "amount" of complications which means they nearly always wear better. This is especially apparent in the difference in grand complications. Patek's movements have fewer parts which also means that they're easier to service. Patek also does more complicated stuff more frequently. Lange got into minute repeaters and sonneries in the past decade which is significant because these are the most complex mechanisms in existence. Patek has an entire line of minute repeaters and the like from many decades ago. In fact, their minute repeaters are considered the gold standard by pretty much every expert, outshining even the likes of JLC. Beyond this, things like the instant time change mechanisms were done by Patek before as well and they are standard fair for their high end pieces. Patek also dabbles more grand complications and has many more technically complex wrist watches than Lange, which has only one. The Henry Grave's supercomplication pocketwatch was a feat of mechanical microengineering made almost a century ago that still is considered among the most complicated watches in the world.
      SO the 70% fluff thing is hardly a fair assessment. You don't get to be king by being a slouch...unless you're Rolex of course.

    I have a Patek and an A. Lange. Both are great; I would never throw shade at either expert watchmakers. But if I had to choose, I would choose the A. Lange. There is just that little unidentifiable something about them. Perhaps it is because they just make less and you see less of them. But whatever it is, the A. Lange makes my heart skip a beat. Can you say that about another watchmaker today?

    Informative video with great insights. I recently was able to try on both, one Patek and one A. Lange Söhne and I must say that you can feel the slightly higher quality of the Lange Söhne. You can be feel the heft and see the impressive finishing details on the Lange Söhne is slightly better and somewhat more affordable than the Pateks. I'm glad this brand is getting the recognition it deserves. Keep up the great work Federico. Your work is much appreciated.

    Dear Federico, you are 100% right, Lange & Söhne are most probably the best watches in terms of decoration of the movement, high quality etc, apart of course some independent watch makers such as GF, F.P. Journe and others. But one has to keep in mind that GF entry level in steel is > 100 000 $, while L&S entry level is around 20 000 $ brand new in gold. This accounts also...Again Big congrats for your very interesting and educating reviews.

    Well, i adore ALS watches. 1815 chronograph boutique edition is my dream watch and if once i could afford a watch from this price range i would definitely go lange. But i admit the king of watch making is Patek Philippe. If u compare brands from different aspects like heritage, finishing level, history, tradition, exclusivity, reliability, prestige it shows that the top of luxury watches is patek. But i find A. Lange und Söhne and Jaeger Lecoultre watches more appealing according to my taste. Btw good video.

    Regarding A Lange & Söhne, it is quite subjective whether one considers them as "the best luxury watch brand", having said that quite agree that watches produced them are absolutely gorgeous and the movement quite sturdy compared to Patek and others. We already had our heart set on Lange 1815, you just gave us another nudge towards Lange.
    On a personal note - love your videos. You have such an endearing personality. Keep making these videos.

    The Lange 2015/16 catalogue which I have next to my desk is another example of their "toujours faire mieux que nécessaire" style of thinking. An almost inch thick book full of the most beautiful photos of watches. Heaven knows how much it cost them to send it from Germany to my house. Though I do dream of repaying them with a purchase one day.... Thanks for the video Federico, take care.

To that point, I am looking at dress watches and would love A Lange & Soehne, but Glashutte and Zenith seem also good affordable second choices. Really attracted to the movement aspects of the watch. Is el Primero enough to put Zenith in the same category as Glashutte? If you would enjoy a comparison between the three brands - especially the dress watches - it would be really great to hear your opinion. Could you consider doing a video telling us about Vacheron Constantin and what makes them special?

    • @missinformation5451
      @missinformation5451 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Vacheron Constantine used to be considered the #1 watchmaker back in the day and it's considerably older than Patek Philippe. Vacheron was founded in the late 1700's and it was popular with Royalty and the Aristocrats of the late Renaissance and Imperial era. I would say they have an 'old money' vibe to them in the sense that anyone who is Nouveau Riche will more likely buy a Patek or Rolex, whereas people with a history of wealth in their family will either be handed down a Vacheron Constantine or choose to go with it because their father or grandfather owned one. Also, Pateks designs are more conservative due to the protestant movement going on during their founding; Vacheron has a more French extravagance kind of style.

      Audemars Piguet was always a high end brand from it's beginnings in the late 1800's though it struggled to keep up until the early 1970's when Gentra designed the Royal Oak for them. It was the first true luxury steel sports watch. It took off and has since become one of the most iconic watches of all time; that single model is what kept Audemars alive and it's been an influence on the Patek Philipe Nautilus and Vacheron Constantine Overseas.

    Great video Federico. I really enjoy watching it.
    My personal opinion is that A. Lange & Söhne is world no. 1 luxury watch brand in this moment.
    Looking from the watch design perspective, I think that it can be say that we are currently living in the A. Lange & Söhne period.
    In a same way as first two decades of the 20th century are marked by Cartier’s design and period of 1970's and 1980's with designs of Gérald Genta, the period of first two decades of this century is marked with A. Lange & Söhne creations.
    All their timepieces are perfect in almost every way. Datograph Up & Down presented in your video, 1815 collection with spectacular GRAND COMPLICATION or my favorite ZEITWERK.... there are no pictures that can describe them well enough. Only when you see them in real live and when you take them in your hands, you can realize how special they are.
    They are truly “…better than necessary” in every way.
    Consequentially, their prices are also special: ZEITWERK around 70.000 EUR, Datograph Up and Down from your video is over 80.000 EUR. Some models from Saxonia and 1815 collections are between 20 and 50 thousands EUR what makes them, let’s say “more affordable”. But then there is the Grand Complication from 1815 collection made in limited collection of only 6 pieces, each of them priced between 1.9 and 2.1 million EUR!. I’m not sure that all 6 of them are even made yet, since almost 2 years of handwork is needed for production of one of those watches.
    I doubt that I’ll will ever have chance to own one of them, but from time to time I enjoy watching them in shops and fairs in the same way as I enjoy other fine art. But who knows…maybe one day ….

    Dear Frederico, for People who have the cash, there is only Lange and Patek Philippe according to Quality and inreasing value They have the Knowledge, history starting with pocket watches and everything. Second is Vacheron, JLC and AP, maybe IWC with the older models. What is interesting, is the fact to find the right models in the brand and here I love your choice very often. Thanks for that !

    Awesome video - very informative as usual! Will never own one - clearly above my level of affordability but I endlessly respect them for not getting into diver/sports watch market - they truly represent sophistication. Will always favor by far neat complications and movement work over "iconic" looks with total lack of complications of other brands we all know. How can we not respect the company that represents what horology and watchmaking really means in its essence. A Lange & Sohne is the hell of the brand!

    I agree. I have for a long time now considered Lange and Sohn the best timepieces. I have an IWC and because the UK is not far from Switzerland I have been to their factory a few times. Some IWC watchmakers also think Lange and Sohn timepieces are the world's best. I wish I could afford to buy one. A Lange One would suit me fine

    I almost Pulled the trigger on a Saxonia for £8500 in White Gold. However i prefer the Rose gold. Since Rolex are messing people around so much and getting one is so tough, together with seeing how much better a Grand Seiko is i've moved away from Patek/rolex to Lange/Grand Seiko

    Federico. Nice video! Lange is my fav brand for a long time but unlucky I can't afford it.. But you should check out the Langematik Perpetual... It is my grail and the display back is by far the most beautiful one I've ever seen in my life... Personally feel like it's better than the datograph..

    Great video Federico. For those who can't afford a Lange- most can't , I think a GO Glasshutte Original comes close . Same classic German look in steel . Great reliability and also beautiful decoration. GO is a brand flying under the radar but it too is starting to get noticed. I noticed the Lange Datograph at an AD and was impressed with its wrist presence. It's the best . When I inquired about the price, I gulped. 90 k. One can always dream .

    At the moment they are number one, just they need some more time to take the real position in the luxury market, despite that im a VC fan, i have spent more on Lange timepieces. they are simply perfect, cant find any thing but perfection in these watches.
    just look at them and you realize how much care and time has been spent on them, and this is how to make a luxury watch.

    Great video Federico very informative & I guess the watch is still my grail .

    Would absolutely get a Lange over a Patek, and a "entry level" Patek (sub $20k) over anything else in not only that process range, but also a Calatrava, which is the gold standard in my opinion.

    • @markn3586
      @markn3586 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might find that a Lange 1815 might stick all the boxes that a Calatrava does. I would like a hand wound Calsyrava, but I'm disappointed that they 215PS is still being used. This is a small movement compared to even a 38mm case.

    Great video as usual Federico !! I have a question that might make a good topic for your Chanel. I'm looking at buying my first high end piece and wondering what your views are on budgeting for a new watch and what percentage of your savings is a sensible amount to spend an a particular watch before buying it is a stupid decision?
