Yes, after going back the the drawing board and being so badly delayed that by the time it hit mass production almost all of zeon's skilled pilots were dead. Then after the war almost all of the surviving ones were scrapped. Sapping resources when zeon badly needed to replace rapidly aging designs it was a net negative. The federation's secret weapon if you may.

And then Mars Zeon using the Geara Doga's data made the OMS-14RF Gelgoog and Gelgoog Commander Type. Just by that time, smaller mobile suits were dominating much bigger mobile suits.
Following the battle at Texas colony, Char should have upgraded his Gelgoog with the addition of the high-mobility backpack add-on, as a way of improving its speed to counteract the Amuro's upgraded suit reaction time when the Gundam was treated with the Magnetic coating upgrade. While Gundam's advantage would have been its reaction time, Char's would be that of the speed when pitted against.
He did make such upgrade immediately after the battle with Amuro in A Boa Qu, and used it for years to come in Axis, according to the semi-canonical CDA manga
Following his encounter with Amuro where his MS-14S Gelgoog Commander Type was damaged, Char indeed upgraded his Gelgoog (which, by that point, was the only remaining Commander Type in existence; the other 24 had been upgraded to the MS-14A Gelgoog Mass Production Type, which had increased armor at the cost of reduced speed and maneuverability) to include the backpack from an MS-14B Gelgoog High Mobility Type, and the severed arm was replaced with one from an MS-14F Gelgoof Marine, replacing the jet thruster on the forearm with a 110mm machine gun. After losing the Zeong and assassinating Kycillia Zabi, Char boarded his now heavily customized Gelgoog and used it to escort the ship carrying Mineva Zabi to Axis, where it was further refined with less bulky, more streamlined armor, a new backpack that conformed to the Gelgoog's torso better than the High Mobility backpack but offered the same increased maneuverability and propellant capacity, and retained the 110mm machine gun in the forearm, creating the one and only example of the MS-14U Gelgoog Space Type. Which still didn't live up to the performance of the MS-14Jg Gelgoog Jager, which was not only just as maneuverable and nearly twice as fast, but had better armor and better weaponry (beam rifle replaced with beam machine gun, a beam spot gun in each forearm, and 60mm head vulcans). Char apparently didn't use his unique Gelgoog very often though, and its ultimate fate is unknown, as he switched to using one of the Black Tristars MS-06R-1A Zaku II High Mobility Type mobile suits for some encounters, and a custom version of the Dom II or Galbaldy A in others prior to co-founding the AUEG and taking a Rick Dias as his personal mobile suit.
It was less like that and more like: Ace: "NO, I DON'T to be in a new high performance cutting edge machine. I like my Zaku more." Command: "Well guess we'll save them for the new guys."

You can't put an f16 pilot in an f35 and expect them to be effective in a few days. Its fair to point out the gap between the Gelgoog being introduced and the Final battle of the war is less than a month
training would take a long time for aces hell there were aces on zeon who only pilot his zaku 1 up to end of the war because he knew how to use that suit.
Also a testament to how well worth the wait the gelgoog was for zeon, being able to take on units far more advanced than itself (probably with a bit of retrofitting) with what looks like the same weapons and all.
0:00 this shot has always stuck with me for some reason. Truly shows the desperation Zeon had at the end of the OYW. Throwing one of the most advanced suits, a suit that could theoretically go toe-to-toe with the Gundam… and at the same time, throwing a suit that was obsolete by the start of the war together. Truly crazy.
I never noticed this before but the the piece of armor that floats around the disabled gelgoog before cutting to the zeta Gundam it looks like it says (made in sunrise CU/LMT omake of GROCO)
Zaku 1,2: Bf-109, the basic, nimble and most produced fighters, famous to have a have a lot of frame on canopy that block the view in a (similar to Zaku, with 2 "frames" that block the view in certain angle.) the main fighter in "battle of Britain" (Operation British) . Some Ace still prefer this after FW190 was available. Dom: FW-190, later model with better protection, much greater fire power, and greater speed, but not as nimble. Gelgoog: Me-262, the first jet fighter, superior in speed and fire power, similar to Gelgoog which is the first MS from Zeon to use beam rifle, and it is extremely not likely for GM to kill it, similar to Me-262 which almost never taken down in the air. Also Char is suppose to be a "copy" of Red Baron (Manfred von Richthofen) , the best Ace pilot from Germany who always paint his fighter to red and the one who taken him down was Arthur "Roy" Brown (Amuro ray?), but they were from WWIs

But if you really want to be put those MS to something relate to WWII, then I think they burrowing the concept of Germain submarine, which dominate the sea during WWII (just like how those marine MS helped Zeon domain the sea at the beginning of the war) and allies have relatively little submarine in comparison.
bet you haven't seen how a single Gelgoog with a skilled pilot managed to hold itself alone against the gundam team in gundam ZZ. and it happened twice

If Zeon weren't left with just rookies the Feds would have a lot of more difficulty on winning the war. The only reason the Gelgoog were under perform is because in the cockpit are rookie pilot seeing combat for the first time.
The scene in Zeta reminds me of how bad ass Yazan is and one of the few times Katz is useful because he actually saves Kamille there from being killed by Yazan.
I always loved piloting the Gelgoog in federation vs. zeon. It felt soo good being an MS Veteran turning the tide of war even against the Gundam. Think my last rank was Rear-Admiral 😊❤
I think the vanilla gelgoog might have zero on-screen kills, maybe even the gelgoog marine. Only seen ace and thunderbolt variants actually hit things.
Still hoping one day Bandai will release an RG Char's Gelgoog. To this day the only grunt suits to have gotten the RG treatment have been the Zaku II and Z'gok.
Rg chars z’gok was a regular release, the mass production version unfortunately was a p-bandai exclusive. And I have a feeling bandai will do the same to the rg gelgoogs, where chars is a regular release, and the rest is p-bandai.

There was a blue gelgoog that anavel gato has it during the one year war even the other red gelgoog was the custom version of johnny Raiden though it might be as a MSV. Also I think dozle zabi does have a gelgoog too but his own custom version perhaps?
If I remember correctly the gelgoog supposed to have the same performance comparable to the Gundam but due to the fact it was piloted by a student pilot without any prior experience about piloting a mobile suit makes this mobile suit sucks.

The MMP78 was designed in 0077-78, while the MMP80 is the slimmer machine gun used in 0083, and it's bulkier variant with the grenade launcher is the UMP version of the MMP80, both of which were intended for mass production in 0080 to replace the MMP78, and neither of which appeared in the original show (to my knowledge)
what is sad about Gelgoog (14A, the mass-production unit) is that as complicated as they are, most of them were issued to the newly recruited pilots. Veterans simply don't have enough time and enough unit to get used to the new MS (doubt that even a month or two wouldn't make it better). So despite few of the Ace pilot who get the 14S commander type did brought the potential of this new MS, most of the 14A fought in A Baoa Qu performed poorly and did not make it a weapon of wonder.
Gelgoog is a funny name. i wonder what it was inspired by or has any meaning in japanese my completely wild guess is that its a reference to the Golgo-13 manga series.
Actually Zeon kept making prototypes rather than mass produce what they found to be reliable the Gelgoog’s history in the one year war was a case of Zeon realizing this mistake far too late
The Gelgoogs here are piloted by novice pilots no older than Amuro. At this stage of the war, Zeon had lost the majority of its best pilots, so they're just tossing amateurs into the cockpits

Actually Zeon kept making prototypes rather than mass produce what they found to be reliable the Gelgoog’s history in the one year war was a case of Zeon realizing this mistake far too late
During the end of the war Zeon just sent into battle any machine that could use a gun even mobile suits as old as the Zaku I

ゲルググはSDガンダムだと使いやすくてよく使ってたな
正直ビームとか光の速さのものを避けれるのはもうニュータイプだろ。
ビームはミノフスキー粒子を圧縮させて水ホースみたいに出してるものですから、光の速さではありませんよ。
光速には及ばないが、それでも常人の目には止まらない。常人なら光った?と思った瞬間に被弾している。
