For example in Africa they don't use wands, they just learn hand magic. There are some examples of hand magic even in the films, for example when prof. Lupin lights the candles in his cabinet when teaching Harry Patronus charm or Dumbledoor in Goblet of fire when he pulls out the names of the goblet, he lower the britness of fire in the hall.

I’m just going say this: Dementors are technically invincible, the only thing they respond to/thing that scares them off is the Patronus Charm, which can be casted by thinking of a happy memory and saying Expecto Patronum (Ex-spec-toe-pa-try-numb). However, this charm is very difficult to master. So no, Chad. Dementors won’t respond to a measly dagger.
