  • If you want to learn to paint like VAN GOGH then you have to watch this video.they say that at the end of his life, Van Gogh painted one painting a day. so he had to paint pretty quickly. in this video I tried to put myself in his position and imagine how he did it. this is one of his more famous paintings called Wheat Field with Cypresses from 1889. He used straws sometimes to make the strokes more evident and he most of the times he used old of his paintings to paint on top,he was painting very fast not to loose that light and he was always looking for that special lighting (like in Japan). He is brilliant, self-taught and committed to his journey

    Once the initial brown background, drawing and blocking-in is done, it’s about layering colour with either texture (colour, direction of and impression of brush strokes) lines or blending to define the edges, with occasional redefining shapes, drawing and blocking-in. Also the more you layer the lighter colours the better perspective is what I got from this technique.

    Hi! I'm watching this video one year after posting but I hope you will check my message. I have to do a Van Gogh painting and it would be really nice if I could use the oil technique but I haven't try it so I need some suggets. How many time takes you to do this work? Have you waited after every step to make the color dry or it's not necessary in this "fast application" technique? Are the colors you used took directly from the tube or mixed with some medium? I heard that use linseed oil makes it difficult to work on many layers (velature) but do you think in this kind of painting could work better? In the video seems like you have mixed color without anything is it real? Do you use turpentine ore something like that for the canvas color, mixing or washing the brush? Just asking to know what may I need to buy to start working like you, love it!

    • @elisatarelli2824
      @elisatarelli2824 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I forgot! What do you think about painting like this but with acrylic colors instead ?

    • @PaintingWithSamir
      @PaintingWithSamir  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hi, glad you like my video. I think it took me about an hour to finish this painting. it's done in wet in wet technique so, I didn't wait for layers to dry. You have to use fat over lean or thick over thin technique. so you can start with paint directly from the tube with thin layer. don't go paint over paint at the beginning. you can see I have done that on the sky part at the start of the painting. put paint separately one next to the other. than when you are building up your painting start applying more paint and you can start using a bit of linseed oil (that's what I do). yes it can still mix a bit with underlayer but you can get away with it, just apply thicker paint. try imagine how Van Gogh painted (fast, confident and with thick paint). try avoiding mixing different colors on canvas and making muddy colors. get your edges visible and with good contrast. hope this txt helps a bit
      cheers

    • @PaintingWithSamir
      @PaintingWithSamir  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am not in love with acrylics, they don't give you freedom like oils. so I think it is harder to get the same result as this in my video.
      cheers

      thank you,I am glad you like it. I usually prep the canvas with some earthy color mixture mixed with some linseed oil (I paint when it's dry on touch.) but this time i didn't prep the canvas. this is just a regular canvas surface what you get when you buy a canvas.

      read the other comments, esp. the ones when Samir replies. Friendly suggestion, is to check other comments prior to asking, a lot of times your answer may be there, more over, get other useful info. This goes for anything on YT, sadly people dont read enough of the comments and great info is there. Sidenote, Most Creators will only answer questions right after posting up to 24-48 hours after. It helps with the Algo. Typically this far after posting, most dont get areply. Just some hints and findings I have seen and/or heard/do.

      Thanks. The one in the Met, this one, is said to have been painted from life, but there are solutions to problems Van Gogh would never employ, and unresolved areas that are inexplicable. in the sky especially. That Prussian blue mountain dead center is awkward. And the yellows appear ocher, not chrome. Many things, such as the mountains, and oddly formed. What do you think?
