It’s been 14 years since neo-soul master D’Angelo released his opus of a sophomore LP, Voodoo, and fans worldwide are still waiting with bated breath at the prospect of what will follow it.
In his first-ever public lecture - held at the Brooklyn Museum, during the month-long Red Bull Music Academy NYC Festival 2014 - D’Angelo answered that question and discussed his inspirations, his work, and his thoughts on the legacy that was born from Voodoo.

    __________________________
Last year, during his Red Bull Music Academy lecture, a close friend and collaborator Questlove said that 10 songs from that mysterious forthcoming album were mastered and that it might drop in late 2013. It didn't. So, when will it?
    TOPICS:
    13:09 - Richmond, Virginia
    33:36 - Questlove
    41:33 - Voodoo
    51:43 - Devil’s Pie
    1:02:39 - Recording vocals
    1:19:21 - Neo-soul

It's weird seeing him sit down and speak and be present. I've gotten so used to the idea of him as a mythical being.

This is very awkward for me and I needed to pause. FIRST OFF, he good. SECONDLY, this is just weird for me. I have gone soooooo long without hearing D'Aneglo give an interview. He maaaaaaaaaaaaaay need to sing this interview to me. Would also help him to relax. I don't know if I can do it. ALSO - he seems slightly uncomfortable, which in-turn is making me uncomfortable.
There are a lot of different emotions right now.

Man O'Neal I think it comes with time. Many musicians are all about the music, so talking is not their forte. Many are quite shy. I think as time goes on and they experience growth, speaking becomes easier. D is one of my favorites. His music is life-changing for me. All the best to him.

There is actually a lot of talent from Virginia. Pharell said the same thing...he was influenced by so many genres as well and he is straight from Virginia too. Missy Elliott is also from Virginia. So ...I think that says a lot. A lot of talent in Virginia.

yea you hit it on its head.. Ray Charles was big and he shifted things early on, but all those good blues players before him and during his time had already done the groundwork, some were playing with jazz bands, but there was an infusion of hillbilly country stuff too and that's where genres parted. Sam Cooke Gospel with soulstirrers was really great too. That call n response thing that's there way before blues and its there in hip-hop too that's central. Stevie Wonder was influenced by Ray and Prince was influenced by Stevie and D'angelo is influenced by Prince. But Ray tugged at Gospel really hard.

He's actually finer now, lol, back when he was interviewed in '97 when Brown Sugar came out he was FEELING himself, he seems cool and down to earth here. Can't blame the man, though ;-)

    • @lisacox3750
      @lisacox3750 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I know this comment is kind of late...but no...he wasn't "feeling himself" in 1997. The dude was like 23 at the time. He was young. He was just being young. He was always shy. He was shy even back then. He was already in a relationship with Angie Stone at that time.

I've never ever heard D'Angelo speak & now that I have I must say I'm taken aback & quite impressed. I guess I was expecting the stereotypical arrogant, hypermasculine attitude of being overly impressed with self. Instead he has a humility & quietness that kinda goes with being a serious artist. Personally I like him stocky like he is now just as much as when he was slim & muscular. He's still super cute & now that I've seen how spiritual & introspective he is, he's so much more attractive to me.

I think he's cute even if he's gained weight, his new album is terrific and challenging, more engaging than his previous stuff, who cares if he "sounds gay" according to some people, he's just a shy, introspective dude, some what of a geek, He only got fir through a trainer, he was skinny beforehand, than after dropping voodoo he fell into drugs and alcohol; and with the popularity of his music video of "untitled" he realized what it is to be objectified...

I appreciate an artist trying to explain their process. I know it's a lot more difficult than people would like to give them credit for. I don't appreciate the snickering and comfortable laughs of the audience when other artists are mentioned. They come off as pretentious. And it's obvious that D'Angelo has respect for these artists that he mentions. What's funny about Brian McKnight, R Kelly, and D'Angelo being in the same place? They are all good artists in their own right.

This interview is greatness. The host really picked the minds of both D'Angelo and Questlove so that we could get some insight into how they came together and how they record together. I wouldn't have been mad if it had went on longer. I'm surprised that someone as reclusive as Mr. Archer sat down for such a long interview. There were a lot of interesting things about him that I didn't know before watching this. I also forgot that he wrote "You Will Know".

P Funk, Sly, JB and more. Half the crowd..more so the younger people..weren't into it since he wasn't Playing his well known stuff but for me it was a dream setlist. Hoping he tours again soon.

In my lifetime, GOAT. First time I saw him as a kid on soul train singing Brown Sugar, I had to get his album. That was my first album. (CD from Circuit City). I was 12. Voodoo was magic. "Feels like making love" got me through my first and awkward times with my high school GF. "Untitled" pretty much turned me into a man. Then I waited...a long time...Black Messiah ended up being my first iTunes download. I'm so happy he's back to show people what soul, Neo-soul, and incredible music is all about. Thank you, thank you, thank you D.

I remember watching the interview probably 10 years ago now which is crazy. And I’m such a D’Angelo fan I was watching everything this MF was on can I watch this interview probably a dozen times. 😂 but this interview, much respect to Nelson George, but this was a once, and maybe twice in a lifetime opportunity to ask deeper questions. And he also cuts D’Angelo off mid thought and that’s not cool. I mean everybody on here probably knows the difference between the Soul Tronics and the Soulquarians. Don’t have my man’s wasting his breath to correct you on something you should’ve worded right. Damn. This MF don’t ever speak. Let HIM talk.

Im gonna say this clear. Christian music is not a temptation. It is music done for the worship of the Lord Almighty God.
Doing music out of the Christian realm is a choice from the temptation of excessive noteriaty, money, luxury and fame.
You can still get the noteriaty, money, luxury and fame worshipping God.
It all depends the choice of where you heart is.
Luke 12:24 "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also"

Well, heroin was supposed to be the inspiration for Brown Sugar. I used to think the song was about Angie Stone/marijuana until he fell off. It's a well known rumor. This interview made me think of it. Apparently, Eric Clapton (former heroin user) helped him get into a rehab center he founded in Antigua.
