I prefer the Jewel Case over the Digipack. The main advantage to the Jewel Case is that it is completely replaceable. If it gets damaged you can transfer all of the artwork to a new Jewel Case.
A Digipack is not replaceable (like an Album Jacket). If it gets damaged (such as the Holder Teeth getting broken or the Artwork get damaged) you have to live with it.
I do agree that the Jewel Case is made out of plastic that is too brittle. That's why I'd rather see a move to the Polycase. It's the same size as a Jewel Case, but it's made of a plastic that doesn't crack in normal use, can hold the same Inserts as a Jewel Case, has a CD holder that us simpler and doesn't have teeth that break off, and is as replaceable as a Jewel Case.

I totally get your reasoning. I rarely manage to break my digipaks and because of that I don't have a problem with that. In fact my cardboard digipaks tend to be more more durable than my jewel cases.

I really dislike digipaks. Sure, they might look nice, at first. But the corners, edges and artwork wears in a way that jewel case artwork can't. Also, I've seen so many digipaks where the plastic hub is crushed in or is missing prongs and it no longer holds the disc securely. And the digi-sleeves (where the disc slides in) always end up scratching the disc. I hate them. Jewel cases are the way to go.

    • @RautaMetal
      @RautaMetal  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

While I understand your point, when you handle your cds well, it doesn't happen too much. And in a way I don't mind that wear either: it just shows how much you've loved your album. But to each his own ofc. Some don't like vinyl or tapes for similar reasons and prefer digital.

    1. Audio quality
    2. condition of packaging
    3. bonus tracks
    4. packaging type
I prefer older pressings because of better sound quality. Referring to dynamic range in particular as remasters are systematically destroyed. Bonus tracks do not matter that much as they usually are irrelevant to me. Jewel case is fine, Digipak as well, digisleeve I do not care for as I find the discs difficult to get out. Non-standard sized Digibooks are not good for display, but if there is space on top of the row, they can be placed there horizontally. Dream Theater has almost vinyl-sized 2CD+BD mediabook, which I just placed with the vinyls.

I prefer plastic jewel boxes to digipaks. They're more durable especially around the edges. Those old school double CD boxes with the booklet in the middle are still cool. Although I kind of like digipaks and digibooks better cause they're usually more artistic as you showed in the video. I'd wager the materials exist to make a digipak that is extremely durable, but it costs too much to mass manufacture/market. These days I wrap all my CDs in plastic cause when I was younger I lost or beat up way too many tapes/CDs, and I've had to replace them throughout the years.

It sucks removing the sleeve when you want to listen to it, but it stays mostly protected and looks cool like my sleeved vinyl.

that malum record is absolutely ferocious, love it! i feel exactly like you said it, vinyl is king of formats for artwork, cd's look and feel pathetic compared to them almost always. vinyl isn't as practical, but therein lies it's charm. i appreciate some digipaks back in the day, but nowadays there are a too many different types. my closet has a very messy corner just for all the atypical cds that don't fit between the rest. in that sense jewel case is better. but only vinyl for me now. maybe i swing on the new malum later. cheers!

I don´t like Digipaks. When CDs came up, the biggest advantage over Vinyl was the case being more robust and easily replaced when damaged or worn out, because the cover, booklet etc. was protected by the jewel case; on the other hand it was not as "noble" as a Vinyl LP cause you don´t have the feeling of putting on the needle, staring on a big cover for hours, the smell...
When a Digipak is worn out or damaged (especially this little "teeth" on the tray where you put the CD), it can´t be replaced or repaired, and still you don´t have the mentioned advantages of a Vinyl LP.
So basically you could say Digipaks combine the negative points of both LPs and CDs.
Still, when I want to have a release and it´s only available on Digipak, I buy it.

Great points on the digipak. When done right they're often an excellent artistic cover and package for a CD. That's why a digipaks as limited edition is appealing. Then I buy and wrap that fucker in plastic, never open it, and either buy the regular version or listen to it online, haha.

  • @maidsandmuses
    @maidsandmuses ปีที่แล้ว

It is simple; CDs are an _optical_ storage medium, using an easily scratched transparent plastic. Any storage medium in direct contact with the surface of the CD is therefore a total no-no; it scratches them up progressively over time. So for me, that rules out the cardboard digi-sleeves, or the simple plastic envelopes as you find with CDs stuck inside a book cover.

    • @RautaMetal

@@RautaMetal I'm glad for you; on the other hand about 25% of the CDs I buy (new!) that come in a factory-sealed cardboard digi-sleeve are already scratched and/or pitted when I first open them. A few I had to repair before I could play them (when new!!), and I have a very scratch-forgiving transport. Obviously, cleanliness at the packing facilities leaves something to be desired and dust/grit gets into the sleeve before they seal it. I never experienced such a bad failure rate on new CDs when they still all came in Jewel cases 😒

All were free of any marks or scratches. Today I just had my first European-manufactured disk for a while delivered: brand new disk in sealed cardboard digi-sleeve but without any extra protection for the CD: badly marked, pitted, & scratched. Hopefully I can repair it. Absolutely hopeless packaging; no different from storing vinyl between two sheets of sandpaper.

The best Sleeve for music is a Gatefold-Vinyl, in my opinion. I totally love it. But to keep it in CD-Version, I prefer to get Digibooks and Steelboxes. Digibooks give the artist all the ways to express the theme of the CD, for example the selftitled of Peste Noire in A5-size or the Race of Cain by Forgotten Woods. On the other Hand Steelboxes are very martial and getting straight to the point of the theme like the Apocalypse War! of Goatpenis or the Black Metal Warfare by Blasphamagoatachrist.
To end it up: good theme for your video and complex theme in it self. Thanks for your Videos and greetings from Germany. \m/

I have always tried to find the special digipak version of an album.
I remember in the '90s when I bought an album as a normal jewelcase version, then went later to a record shop and
found out that there was a cool looking special digipak version also available of that same album. And then you get the feeling, you could have
    bought that special version instead.
Why to buy the normal, if you can buy the special one?
Some album are first released as a normal jewelcase, then later rereleased as a special digipak version.
Some albums are first released with original artwork, then rereleased with a different and much worse artwork.
You want to get the original one with the better artwork. Like which is the case with the Setherial's Nord rerelease
(artwork designed under the supervision of the band?).
With some releases the special edition is very rare and not worth of tracking down at all.
Cradle Of Filth released a Celtic Cross edition of their 3rd one, Cruelty & the Beast which I remember
omitted the last two songs which were replaced by bonus tracks (including Sodom cover & techno version of Twisted Nails of Faith).
Nowadays some digipak editions are so poorly done you regret buying those. They don't contain the booklet at all for example.
The Mayhem album Daemon's slipcase mediabook version is apparently great but kind of expensive with it's 26,99 € price tag.

@@dennydude3737 Digipack is about 30-100% more expensive than Jewel case CD. And 10-15y ago digipacks were often 2-3 times more expensive than Jewel case. When it comes to production cost. At least in countries around me.
And I also don't see how can digipack scratch your CD.
Maybe you just don't know what is digipack...
Btw: I prefer digipacks since I v received my 1st one as gift from Wintherr. He send me A5 digipack of Paysage D Hiver - Schattengang. That was the most beautiful CD I v ever seen. Since than I m in love with digipacks. I like how they look compared to Jewel case. And I don't use my CDs anymore anyway so they are protected in my shelf.

@@RautaMetal I have heard the "theory" that "because cardboard is softer than the polymer the discs are made of, it's impossible for them to scratch the disc" a million times over. But tell that to the inevitable pieces of dirt and grit that eventually find their ways into to digi-sleeve which have no concern for these "theories", especially when buying albums second hand. Digipaks are awful, and digi-sleeves should be considered a crime to collectors everywhere. Jewel Cases 100%. I'm with you all the way Dennis Castro.

Hate both. I throw away the jewel case and place my CDs in a plastic sleeve.

One problem with Jewel Cases is that they scuff up immediately after purchase if you stack them one atop the other. They have to be kept separate to avoid grinding into each other. I bought cheap see through plastic sleeves and now them each one in one of those. The digipack seem cool and colorful, although they are a new novelty to be impressed with (I just got my first digipack cds a few weeks ago). I also put them into plastic sleeves. I don't know how well they endure over the years though. I have to admit I rip each CD I buy on the computer and listen to them that way rather than directly from CD. I love collecting them for their artwork. Vinyl albums are definitely King of Artwork, but there size was designed around the necessity of having room to store the music (about 44 minutes work for a large disk). Surly the artwork is oppressive to designers who have to consider such a big format. And, Vinyl albums aren't too good for storing inner booklets. Cassette Tapes were cool to collect, but had the same problems with CDs as far as scuffing up and breaking. The inner booklets were too small and the art too small. I think the perfect size format would be Novel size, and something presentable in a bookcase the way CDs are. They can be read from the side whereas albums can't once they're stacked together. You always have to shuffle through them to find the one you want. So, we need a new format with a standard size (larger than CD, much smaller than vinyl album), presentable in a bookcase to showoff the collection, readable from the side, doesn't get scuffed up, and that can be instantly accessible via your digital music sources. It's going to need to do everything a CD can do and everything that an itune can do, instantly from purchase. A tiny inexpensive chip stored in a proprietary interface and size is the answer. And, the format needs to be playable to hear the "simulated-analog" (best available version) or the "digital" (easily shareable compressed version). I think its time to start on a project to develop it. Itune lovers are missing out from the experience of collecting hard copies and long time collectable versions of their music, while oldies are missing out being able to listen to their music nearly anywhere and anytime. For a new format to become successful it's going to have to do both, and it's going to have to institutionalize itself within the industry. I think the recording artists and buying public are going to have to jointly own the format, with shares of "crypto currency" to have total control of it, the more you music your make and sell (artists) and the more music you own as a collector (consumers) will control the format. It's the wave of the future. 😃

Interesting thinking. I guess Nintendo Switch is like that: size of a pocket book but data on a chip. 7" vinyl is also pretty nice in size.
