Contrary to common notion, Shreveport originated as a for-profit business venture by a group of seven partners. Captain Henry Miller Shreve, often wrongly thought of as the places founder was indeed part of that group. It grew throughout the 20th century especially after the discovery of oil and became a national center for the industry. The third most populous city in Louisiana after New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Shreveport is a thriving commercial and industrial center, trading in petroleum, natural gas, chemicals, iron and steel, cotton, and lumber. The place is well provided with ethnic, regional, and the predictable population of franchise food operations, some carrying on the tradition of the original.
Another Broken Egg is now a Destin, Florida-based franchise offering breakfast, brunch, and lunch known for their diversified menu and effort toward what their promotional literature calls “a charming atmosphere with lots of interesting details.” The Shreveport café provided us when we stopped in with brisk and friendly service in, yes, a charming atmosphere. And once served, we liked the food.
When I prepared this the outfit claimed just under 20 locations, but is apparently in a growth mode, which no doubt is being adjusted and modified for Covid circumstances though apparently agreements for expansion may have been inked in Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. According to press material, “Another Broken Egg Cafe’s growth can be attributed to the fact that they’ve established a unique restaurant concept in a field relatively untapped by competitors.”
“What’s also interesting about Another Broken Egg Cafe is that the founder has such a cool story,” the press release notes, “When working as a Department of Defense engineer at NASA in the early 1990s, Ron Green never imagined he’d go on to construct an 18-unit chain of gourmet breakfast, brunch, and lunch restaurants across the Southeast. But after growing tired of his 9 to 5 job and experiencing a ‘midlife clarity,’ Ron decided to begin his personal revolution despite boasting no restaurant experience.”
“Fifteen years ago, Ron, with his own bare hands, renovated the chain’s first restaurant - a 1908 summer home in Old Mandeville, Louisiana. The first ‘Egg’ team opened the doors to remarkable success during the Thanksgiving weekend of 1996, with two-hour waits out the door. Today, Ron’s creation has become the darling of diners across the Southeast, earning a myriad of awards including ‘Best Breakfast’ for 11 consecutive years (Emerald Coast Magazine), ‘Architectural Interior Design Award’ (Lafayette) and ‘Best Bloody Mary’ in Destin, Florida.”
