  • Join us on a captivating journey through Maine's wild landscapes as we hunt for grouse and woodcock with German Shorthaired Pointers, renowned pointing dogs.
The story of the Carters has many acts. It’s a play that is far from over. It's a generational story with bold beginnings, given the Carter’s involvement in the founding of NAVHDA and the ongoing evolution of their children and grandchildren. They have distilled knowledge over generations and compounded it for the benefit of us, all while being motivated by their love of the dogs.
If you're as passionate about hunting and the bond between humans and these exceptional pointing dogs, especially the remarkable German Shorthaired Pointer, as we are, please give this video a thumbs up, leave your thoughts in the comments, and don't forget to subscribe for more adventures!

I can never decide whether to watch these immediately or to save for the perfect time to watch.

Not your typical multi generational hunting story. Very special to see 3 generations with Grandma and Grandughter. A rare gift, I would say.

I love this. 75% of the reason I do what I do is because of the dog work. Outside my family, bird dogs are my true passion in life. My dogs are trained for the wide open plains, but there's just something about grouse and Woodcock in the forest that pique my interest. My channel is still in its infancy, but I really hope to do a trip to the grouse woods sooner rather than later.
    Excellent work!

Was initially hooked 14 years ago. Finally got my own dog, and the memories are better than I could imagine. I agree, even if I don’t get anything but my dogs working and finding birds, love to see it and makes the hunt for me. My boy will be on his 2nd season, can’t wait!

Very similar to the European woodcock, but different, there are some videos on my channel where it hunts.
    Congratulations great video

Great program. Your next dog needs to be a setter. It's hard to explain.... They'll retrieve as well as any upland breed. Here's a sidebar: You can hide or put a camo vest on a white setter if you want to waterfowl with it, but you can't take the "camo" off of a GSP when he's on point and you're trying to find him expeditiously in grouse/woodcock cover. 😉 Thanks for sharing! By-the-way, that is a SWEET SxS your daughter is shooting!! I hope it's fixed chokes? I see she has two types of shells loaded. Typically it's a sign of a wise double-gun owner that understands that you can get FAR more variance in modern shells than with chokes AND fixed chokes (their more graduated forcing cones) perform better down-field than your average screw-ins - the reduced maintenance of fixed chokes aside.

At around 7:08 to 7:10 the woman holding the SxS seems to have 2 different types of shotgun shell loaded. Any reason for that? Different shot sizes? Different loads? Or just what happened to come out of her vest first? 😂

I'd guess just whatever she happens to have in her pocket at the time (Happens to me often enough)
      - Or maybe she's quite serious about her game, have different shot-size for her more open choke and tighter choke.

I disliked how he shit on road hunting for grouse. Road hunting creates plenty of lasting memories and may be the only way someone has access to grouse hunting. I get it's not for everyone, it's not my favorite thing to do either, but not everyone has a dialed in pointing dog or an upbringing that put them in a good situation to learn to hunt like this. To each their own, but don't yuk someones elses yum when bird hunter numbers are dwindling like they are.
