I prefer to look at it from both sides because that makes this film all the more fascinating for me. I think it's a terrific movie even if it would misrepresent most sales companies. People happen to like or dislike this film for very different reasons.
Initially surprised to see how many sales people did find the speech motivating, it became clear to me there is a certain pride about the work and some salesmen are just born to do it which is great. Honestly if I'd be a saleman I'd focus on information and identifying selling points. I'd still suck most likely. But the way I experienced the film, it was about hell.
I understand the hatred of this film if this speech was shown every week. GGGR shows an awful company to work for. Baldwin is essentially the villain and the film hints at that in a not very subtle manner ("my watch is worth more than your car"). It also proves that this youtuber's sales company head honcho didn't really get the film as it was intended.
Lack of appreciation by the larger audience is probably due to less exposure. This was no blockbuster film and it certainly is no material for any holiday. Other folks probably find the film too talky. That people aren't interested in a film or simply weren't that enthusiastic doesn't mean they are morons.

You are a fool. I'm a black man from Detroit who works an hourly blue-collar job. When I saw GGGR on VHS in the 90s I'd never heard of it. But almost from the opening scene I was hooked and then run through an emotional wringer from start to finish. The writing, the cinematography, and especially the acting of the ensemble cast were all stellar. I have to wonder how you, presumably a grown man who has worked for a living at some point, weren't similarly gripped. As far as Top Gun Maverick is concerned, I watched it all the way through on a streaming service but I wasn't particularly impressed.

This movie rang true to me. It was a mirror held up to life. I sat in a few of these sketchy sales companies sales pitches to new prospects, you could smell the BS on them. Kinda like pyramid schemes. These no ethics fly by night sales companies selling crappy products just to make a buck and run, buyer be danged. This movie captured that vibe big time.

This movie is about the cutthroat nature of the sales field. All the unsuccessful salesmen in the office kept blaming the leads for their lack of success. People sympathize with jack lemmons character because of his daughter but at the end of the day he was just another poor salesman (which is why spaceys character was hired over him.

Exactly. The movie shows the stark reality of this work rather than blow sunshine up the asses of the viewers, lying to them by saying everyone can be successful in sales. GGGR is about how only crazy types or guys with rare talent are cut out for the job. It’s not supposed to make you want to be in sales, it’s supposed to filter out those who don’t have the balls or brains to be a salesman. Those who have what it takes will watch this movie and go, “Holy shit I want some of that.”

I respect the opinion, but I think the point of the movie was to show how absurd the sales world is, and how you have to be deluded or already successful to find your place in it.
The way audiences received it and how that one Alec Baldwin scene has made its way into every office says more about how viewers interpreted it incorrectly than the actual point of the movie. It wasn’t supposed to a guidebook or motivational film meant to drive people towards sales, it was supposed to be a critique of that field and how it warps reality for most.
If anything, this further proves the point that the “artistic aristocracy” is was right, and that the common viewer is easily swayed by some witty line or badass actor instead of looking at the hidden messaging.
All that being said, I think the cast does a great job conveying this. Jack Lemmon shows how sales can ruin your family life, Alan Arkin shows the dumb yes-man type that goes with the flow without critically thinking, Al Pacino shows the rare man who might actually be cut out for this sort of work, and Alec Baldwin/Kevin Spacey show the rich hot shot who had his position handed to him and scolds those below him for not being as successful.
The way I see it, the characters in this film were never meant to be looked up at. Anyone who fell for that trap got it wrong and is fooling themselves.

A lot of criticism here, but I felt the same way as the reviewer at first. I watched Death of a Salesman two days ago and didn't need to watch any TH-cam videos after. I couldn't figure out exactly what GGGR was going for though, as Death of a Salesman showed it all and then some: the full circle of the psychology and the generational fallout, cycles and cycle-breakers. But I loved GGGR anyway for being a good remake? I think your point is valid. The real-world response to the film and so forth shouldn't be looked at as the intention of the film. The film shows the same delusions in Death of a Salesman which are propagated by the domestication of the human being. The constraints of society result in insanity because they're the wrong constraints; i.e. we are educated and supported into wage slavery, not self expression, growth and transformation which are the spirit's natural tendency, masculine or feminine. Capitalism is good, our education system and culture are bad meaning truly faulty.

excuse my hoity toity ness but I see Glengarry as NOT all about how tough and " meaningless " the sales profession is. Maybe it is I don't know from experience but the point is ANY profession could be seen as bullshit. Factory work, being a mechanic, a teacher, really anything. And every line of work has it's success stories , it's failures, and a lot of just hanging on. Much is determined by individuals and their approach to the job. Conflict, arrogance, stupidity, naivity, all we see in Glengarry is also prevalent in other professions. especially anything with a lot of personal interactions with the public. A Glengarry play can center around exaggerated drama and role playing in any profession. I see the salesman profession part probably there because it's an easy one to create interesting ( to some ) conflict riddled characters and story line to, also one David Malmut had some experience with. Audiences don't like movies reminding them what a shitty world we live in ? What's left, cartoons and light comedy ? I HATE happily ever after movies but maybe I'm too 'European " that way...

This was the best movie ever. People don’t realize this movie was based on a true story. Alec Baldwin who was portraying this person had orders by GlenGary and GlenRoss to fire every salesman because they suck except for 1 That was Al Pacino Character. Al was already on top. While the rest was at the bottom. This is why he wasn’t at the meeting. For 3 reasons. 1 he was a good salesman. 2 Keven Spacey character didn’t want him to go there because he was afraid Al would be telling Alec some dirt on Kevin. 3 Kevin didn’t think Al deserve to hear this. But instead Alec Decided not to fire anyone but to give them tough love and to give them 1 more chance to be at the top. He gave them an offer 1st prize you get a Cadilac 2nd prize a set of steak knifes and 3rd prize your fired. Now these guys are now competing against each other to see who is the best salesman. These leads are bad because GlenGary and Ross is testing these guys to see if they can do the impossible. If they succeed then they put there money where there mouth is and hire that salesman to run the real leads. This is why Alec said these are the GlenGarry Leads. These leads are the real deal. Only those who are qualified as a top salesman can get them. This is where the real money begins. However Someone stole the new leads and we the viewers need to figure out who stole these leads and why. But we found out it was Moss and Shellie who stole the leads and sell them for profit. You know the rest. This is why I said this was the best movie ever. They did a great job.

I disagree, but enjoyed listening to your view. I always saw their back and forths where they say “the same thing over and over” as these desperate men trying to get something over and over and watching them slowly become more human as their attempts are shot down. It shows the human spirit crumble in real time and I believe David Mamet wrote the original play as a reference to his time working in a Chicago sales office. I think people connect with it as they see these desperate individuals have to live in the world they dove into with a promise of a better one.
