  • Orphaned elephants, Ambo and Jotto, make the move from our Nursery in Nairobi National Park to the SWT's Ithumba Reintegration Unit in Tsavo East. This is a momentous day for the two boys, who having been rescued by the SWT and afforded a second chance at life, are now embarking on the next stage in their gradual reintgration back to the wild.
Watch their journey unfold and witness the wonderful sights and sounds that greet them on arrival at Ithumba.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

Seeing the new babies unload only to be greeted by old friends with outstretched trunks will never get old. Happy tears every time. I can only imagine how beautiful it must be in person. Thank you DSWT for taking such good care of them. 🧡

Its like you can sense Dame Daphne looking over everybody and finally be able to relax because Angela, who in her own right, is the new Dame of the elephants. The keepers is looking so confident, they just know every little detail about every little baby and adult orphan ellie. It's such a joy to watch them grow.

This one is a little bittersweet for me. I started following DSWT when Ambo and Jotto were new in the nursery. 😥
I'm also glad that Sapalan finally has a mini-herd to be with. He's been a loner for most of his time in Ithumba I think. And I hope Ambo and Jotto befriend Enkikwe! I think those three have similar personalities.

    • @heatherjones6647

Same. I was in the Nursery in Nov. 16 when Jotto was new and very feeble. He had been brought back early and put to bed. He had a young Keeper who was new to the Trust who was brimming with info and zeal for the work. I'm sure he is one of the reasons Jotto was able to overcome his rough beginning and thrive. We then went to Ithumba and it is amazing. How lovely to see this video bringing these two experiences together. Sapalan will find his place I'm sure!

So wonderful to see them graduate. I first saw these two when they were so tiny and fragile in June 2016. It’s been wonderful to meet them 2 times since that first visit watching them get bigger and stronger. Jotto especially on my later visits was so friendly. I can’t wait see them in the fall at ithumba.

I counted 22 elephants at the water hole (I could be off a couple). That’s a lot of elephants to care for...much love and hugs to the Keepers who may not get enough recognition for their life saving work! I’m sure Ambo and Jotto were nervous but I’m so glad to see them getting settled. What a wonderful organization DSWT has in saving these orphans. God bless everyone!♥️🐘♥️🐘♥️🐘♥️🐘

I wonder do any of you stop to think about the poor and starving children of this country? It seems no expense is spared on these animals but what about the many human souls that perish before their 10th birthday in this country (about 60%). Because they lack basic neccities like clean water and food and vaccines Meanwhile these animals get a private plane ride to a nursery.. Human being grow up to be grateful, productive and give back to their community. What do these elephants offer you for the future? I know they are cute when they are babies but they do grow up to require an enormous amount of food and water, all for 1/2 of the habitat to supply in the future? Can anyone else see the train wreck In about 5-10 years from all these " rescues"? I know you mean well, I question your priorities.

The first time I ever watched a graduation day video I felt so sad for them not realising that it's really like a big surprise birthday party with old friends waiting to greet them. And then all the special guests. As I understand it, the last time they laid eyes on a fully grown elephant was prior to their rescue.

Yes there is! It’s not an exact age, but on average, we move the orphans from our Nursery to the Reintegration Unit when they reach the age of three. But we always take into account friendships at the Nursery, which orphans are already at the stockades (former friends for example), as well as practical details like how many orphans we have at each centre and even the weather - which can make some roads impassable at certain times of the year. We can tell an orphan is ready to make the move when they are psychologically and physically stable, or if they are pushing against the social 'boundaries' e.g. pushing their friends around, showing that they are ready to learn from older elephants.
