I had a similar problem... You are correct about the frustrations in ordering from them. I put together the box and used some screws only to find out that they were creating grounding issues. Redco told me that I had “used the incorrect screws” , but they have nothing on the site about what the correct ones are. Long story short is that everything is working great now. I have 14 channel with 2 returns, and it’s been amazing.
I'm gonna be putting together a 4 channel one of these soon to get the pres from my Antelope Zen Tour away from my desk because routing cables sideways around the unit is probably one of my least favorite things to do. Thank you so much for the parts list! Saved me a bunch of time right off the bat for it so I can get everything all together in one purchase
I actually did something similar using redco parts. I had a rack with some spare space in it sitting in my live room, so I got a rack panel instead of a box, wired that up to bulk cable, and wired the other end directly to my patchbay. The tie lines are normaled to my preamps, but I can break the normal if I want and send a mic signal somewhere else instead. Same concept, different parts. Works awesome and was way cheaper than buying a pre-made snake.
Ryan, I would love to hear more about the mic pre's you buildt. Maybe go through them in a similar fashion as you did this cable snake... Im on the verge of trying some diy myself, though Im not too experienced in this field.. love watching your videos and courses. Great stuff man.. Great stuff 👍💪
Cool, and good idea. I build the Seven Circle Audio T15 pre amps. They were 100 bucks each but wanted to build the more expensive ones but just couldn't. They can be driven hard into saturation which is cool. Better than most preamps I think.
It's a time/cost tradeoff. I built up a couple of 4 input stage boxes for a local church. Nice chrome finish, looks good, but took AGES. The guy I was working with bought plain panels which I had to mark out and drill in a very limited workshop; they ain't perfect. I don't mind soldering though, that's mother's milk. And of course don't forget to fully test each connector!
Yeah, I remember wiring up DVI cable installs of conference rooms and I had the same discussion with my supervisor at the time. It's better to get pre fabbed. For audio, it's just three wires, and snakes it's a bit much but I did it.

I want to hook up my microphone via splitter to let's say 5 different preamps so that later on, I can choose which one I like most without having to do different takes on each preamp... is this possible to do?

I usually just email Chris at Redco and he puts together a quote for me including all the bolts, connectors, etc. Just stay away from their Cue Boxes, I have had many issues with those.
I purchased a 12 in 4 out 8 meters long snake, brand new finished off the shelf for AU$200 (US$150). For that price, no way I would turn on my soldering iron LOL
Would love to know the brand of it. I found that my high end clarity improved in a HUGE way in only 30 feet of mogami. I was using a live snake for a while and got used to the sound. Then I build mine and boom, big difference.

Get a small break press for bending metal, then you can make your own boxes. Save yourself some money and less wait time, plus you can go way deep into customizing your box layout and material etc.
Most people aren't going to be making a bunch of these. I wouldn't buy all the tools just to make one or two Also, there are so many options out there it makes the ability to customize redundant.

Rolling your own is the way to go with cables. I can't believe I ever bought cables now.

I just bought a 24 input 🐍 snake for around 150.00 and ran it into the drum 🥁 room for drum miking , head phone feeds and predy much everything

Not really, because the preamp is a part of the microphones circuit - it interacts with the preamp.

It's just three wires. Get a soldering iron and I'm sure there are videos about how to do it. Totally worth it.
