So nice to watch someone doing the next good thing all day long. Sometimes this gig can get a bit lonely, so it’s nice to know I’m not the only one in the kitchen all day. This week we’re preparing for the hurricane, so very little canning going on, but lots of harvesting and battening down the hatches.
I call it perpetual cooking. We decided before we had children I would stay home with them and for me to justify that I decided to be frugal and make nourishing meals from scratch with the best ingredients I could source. It doesn’t leave time for many extra relationships- it can be very lonely. Especially when so many live the fast life and I just can’t keep up with it all- without going to all packaged pre prepped food and take out😅
@kindnessmatters it can be challenging to navigate relationships when you live so differently against the mainstream. We have each other here on the interwebs which is my saving grace- likeminded friends all over the globe makes up for hard to find local like minds🌻🌻🌻
I love your method of adding ingredients to your cornbread while waiting for the mill to finish grinding. Quite a timesaver. And the soup looks delicious!
Katie, I have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, I am also Italian and LOVE TOMATOES, peppers all the nightshade vegetables, I have dramatically decreased my nightshade usage and my inflammation has gotten a little better. I so enjoy your videos and encourage you to continue the great work. I have gleaned many helpful things from you channel, Thank you❤
I had no idea about the bloom on the blue elderberries. I’m on the east coast and ours are that super dark rich wine color with no bloom. I found lots wild growing up in Vermont and now in Florida there’s a strain that grows here too❤️🙏🏼
It’s an odd PNW berry bloom- similar to that is on some grapes and blueberries. I was accustomed to the black no bloom elderberries prior to moving here. I was perplexed and thought they were blue clusters of flowers from a distance- pleasantly surprised it was this type of elderberry native to the PNW🌻
For cornbread, have you ever tried using a hot buttered iron skillet? Obviously do what is best for you but my life was CHANGED when a friend of mine taught me how she makes cornbread! I have an old 8" pan (I've found older, well-seasoned pans work best for skillet bread), and I'll heat it real hot on the stove while I'm mixing my ingredients, and once I'm done I put a few pads of butter in, get all sides well greased, and pour in the mix. Then while it bakes, it separates from the pan and gets nice and crispy! I can then turn the pan over once it's cooled a bit and it comes right out! 🙂
That’s how I always made it :) I have my mothers cast iron I cook in- almost exclusively. Crumbs from corn bread stick in a thin even layer in it- it’s not a big deal and easy to clean- the cornbread always comes out in one piece beautifully but there’s always a bit to clean out. I was pointing out that these ceramic pans have nothing left behind😅. I’m trying out these Caraway pans and will have my unboxing video tomorrow. I much prefer cast iron and the old ways of the kitchen ;) It’s fun to try new things and there are so many Cookware options on the market… I’m an o’l lady stuck in my old ways. But I’m willing and open minded to TRY new cookware. 😅🥰🌻
Thank you so much Kim!! Others are sick of me and come to the comments to say so- I’ve spent this morning removing mean commenters and people that have nothing better than to sling insults. Pray for those that are so disgruntled!
@@RowesRising That’s exactly what you should do to the the haters!! You don’t seem like the type that would bother with people like that. I guarantee you they don’t have any of knowledge or skills that you are generous enough to share! Carry on sweet girl👏🏻😘
Ooh! I have her cornbread recipe printed out but haven't tried it. Good to hear you lo e it. Always love the ideas I get from these videos. Thanks again for opening your kitchen up to all of us.
Loved the emotional support tomato. 😂 Speaking of tomatoes: if you dry then powder the skins, you can turn it into tomato paste. The skins contain pectin.
Hi. I'm new to your channel and have to say I'm loving it. I'm older and never was a great cook but watching you I've learned a lot. Now that I'm retired I enjoy cooking more. My seed potatoes didn't do good at all, so I think I'll do in ground instead of planter next time.
Potatoes are fun to figure out. I noticed they need more looses material around them and they thrive better and make more potatoes when they have easy material to grow in.
Hey Katie! It’s sucks when the kiddos are feeling bad, hopefully the syrup worked for him. I’ve got 3 kids two and under and when one gets sick we’re all down for about a week.
I was really pleased because we couldn’t find any potato starts/seeds anywhere. All the stores either sold out early spring or never had any. So I was really happy with the store bought- although a more expensive route😅
Our potato harvest was awful this year. New home, new garden and everything else did amazing but the potatoes. Ugh. I hate buying them from the store. Yuck
Just found your channel. Raw milk is amazing. I also drive 50 minutes to get it. My friends don’t understand why I do so much and pay so much to get it. But my daughters gut has been so much better ever since we went to raw milk.
I wonder if elderberries would grow in the foothills of central California. I’m wanting to use more natural remedies for ailments. Love cooking day. Enjoyed the boys getting in on the gardening
Today i researched how tomato sauce affects men. Let's just say my husband has been drinking a lot of fresh tomatoe sauce and he's insanely fresh and it's the only change he's done lately. Ugh Anyways, after researching, i discovered that tomato juice is extremely good for men's prostate. It's known to shrink them and when cooked tomatoes are eaten or drank with broccoli it's even better for them. Studies have shown that it can also reverse early signs of prostate cancer. Learn something new everyday. YAHUAH creation is absolutely amazing.
Ever tried taco soup? Add an envelope of taco seasoning and dry ranch seasoning to that soup and shazam, you got a really tasty bowl of taco soup. I want one of those mills. We have a hand crank one, but it's huge and I'm not hauling it out everytime i want to mill something. Contemplating buying one. 🤷♀️
I didn’t have any taco seasoning and I was trying to make it with random seasonings- I failed🤣 no so taco seasoning flavored after all. I’ll do the packets next time like you suggest.
Yum!! We love raw milk. When we lived in the UK we had fresh milk from Jersey cows raised on the richest green grass. The cream was GOLD and the butter the most pure yellow I’ve ever seen. We live in the high desert now and the milk is good just not quite the same.
If you used grocery store potatoes to start your own, I suspect the difference in growth between the organic and non-organic potatoes is that the non-organic potatoes are treated with sprout inhibitors. Organic potatoes aren't treated.
Hi, question why did you use apple cider vinegar with the string beans before canning ? Is it for taste or for safety reasons ? And how much did you use. Appreciate the information love your channel very informative 😊
I get whole organic yellow corn from Azure www.azurestandard.com/shop/product/food/grains/corn/whole/yellow/whole-yellow-corn-organic/7438?package=GR026&a_aid=93ac729e3c
I added some smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, and salt to taste. I’m terrible about recipes. I looked at the back of my southwest seasoning for the gist of “taco” seasoning. I’ll try to do better and record what I do- this was off the cuff. I had no clue what I was making until it was done.
Hello, thanks for such inspiration and recipes. Do you host Thanksgiving or Christmas? I am a new sub, what State do you live in? Watching on 09.26.22 WE live in Pittsburgh PA and I will share your videos TO THE BURGH(STTB). ENJOY your day!
Thank you so much!! We are currently stationed in Oregon but most of our family is back east in Virginia. We have not hosted a Thanksgiving or Christmas but we do make a feast for both every year with our little family :) Holidays are lonely for us- we have each other thankfully, but no one else. 🌻🌻 Thank you for watching!!
Curious if you are watching from a handheld device or television? Because we do not have a volume issue when editing or watching in our end. 🤯 I didn't know countertop mills existed! 1st time watcher. I subbed just because of that.

Corn seems to take forever to mill 😅 Should I mill it more coarse then a second time more fine?

We limit nightshades but still prepare them for the youngins. They tolerate them fine but we get inflammation and pain too 😫

It’s been a long time for us as well- here in the high desert. So thankful for rain!
I bought me some chicory to plant today 3 of them
Your potatoes are amazing for store bought potatoes. Our harvest wasn't that great, but I don't think they were too new when we planted them.

It’s on Grains and Grit TH-cam channel :) or linked in this video description- I’ll add it now 🫣th-cam.com/video/0WPrbrrEesY/w-d-xo.html

I used about a teaspoon per quart jar to help make the beans more easily digestible 🌻
