The bit about Lynda Carter is really cool to hear. I don't think she did voice work for Fallout 3, but I know she did for Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 4. I'd like to think that she spent more time on the public floor because she was proud of what had been made.

Thanks for your perspective. This sounds like a party I would have dreamed of going to!
My perspective of the Fallout 3 launch while exciting for me, was definitely no where near as exciting as yours.
I started playing Fallout 1 and 2 at an extremely young age (way younger than I should have been) but I loved the universe you created. I spent countless hours in those games and year after year I was always on the look out for Fallout 3 news but in the meantime I was discovering other games, like TES III Morrowind on the original Xbox. I fell in love with that gameplay style and while I love isometric games, and always will, you can imagine my excitement when I heard I was going to be able to actually explore the world of Fallout from a much more personal perspective. In 2008, I sold my original Xbox to buy a second hand Xbox 360, and I bought GTA IV, Fable 2 and of course Fallout 3 at launch. I remember going into the stores and they were still unpacking boxes of the game and I said to the lady "I'll have one of those please", pointing to a stack of Fallout 3 copies. She asked if I had been waiting for that one and I told her "only for 8 bloody years!" (which back then, felt like a really long time). I was probably about 16. Those were good times.
Since then, Fallout is still my favourite gaming franchise of all time. I love each and every single player entry in it for different reasons. Now that both Obsidian and Bethesda are both a part of Microsoft, I really hope that there's a possibility of you returning to the franchise in some capacity (provided it's what you want to do of course).
Thank you Timithy Cain for being such a huge part of creating one of my favourite things in this life.

Hey, Tim. I just wanted to tell you a little story about myself and how I met Fallout and how it kind of steered my life.
I was around 12 years old when I first played Fallout. Funny thing is, when Fallout 3 released, I remember seeing ads and lots of those collector's edition lunchboxes on one of the shopping malls, but I had no idea what it was back then so I completely ignored it. Some time later, my then sister's boyfriend borrowed me a pirated copy of Fallout 3 for my Xbox 360 and told me to try it. I immediately got addicted to it. Then I went and bought another pirated version for myself (sorry Tim ;-;).
I played Fallout 3 every day for a long time. I think I might have done every single possible thing on that game. It was the first Fallout I ever played and it was magical. Not only Fallout 3 helped me a lot in learning english because of the dialogue, and it also contributed to my love for games.
Later Fallout New Vegas was coming out and, when it did, I kind of didn't like it. I didn't understood it and it felt just so weird. Some time passed, I got me a Steam account, started playing on PC and then I bought (I went legit in the end) Fallout 1 and 2. I played them and instantly felt in love. I then went back to playing New Vegas and I finally understood it better and loved the game ever since.
So when you said the thing about the "whole new generation of gamers being exposed to Fallout", yeah. I was part of that whole new generation. Fallout 3 might've been a lot different from the original Fallout, but I had lots of fun. It led me to play (and actually buy) the rest of the franchise.
I am now on my late 20s and Fallout is still one of my favorite franchises. Because of Fallout I was able to learn and perfect my english. It inspired me to study game development and, eventually, got a degree. I made lots of friends because of Fallout as well. My friends used to call me the "Fallout Wiki" because I was so addicted to it haha. As for the degree, I ended up working on marketing rather than the gaming industry. Still, it was plenty of fun to study it. I do not regret any of it.
So, what I wanted to say is: Thank you, Tim for your amazing work and franchise that you created. What may seen like just a game for some had a far lasting positive impact on my life. I learned, I played and I made friends because of it.
If you ever read this, I hope you have a great day today. (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)

It sits among such celebrated titles as Super Mario Bros, Daggerfall, Warcraft 2, Diablo and Ultima Online to name a few. As I got older I don't get that experience any more. But my appreciation for video games has deepened because I can see beyond just playing and enjoying to all the systems that work together to make a good game, and the people that make them. Thank you for the story, you're awesome.

Wonderful story, Tim. I wouldn’t be here right now watching this video if it weren’t for Fallout 3. I grew up playing very straightforward, simple games, so at 13 when I first played Fallout 3, that was my first game with not only choices and stats, but a world, lore and story that was actually what I’d call interesting to me in the sense that I actually wanted to know more.
After that, I quickly found a CD collection with Fallout and Fallout 2, so I could play them. Yes, they were a bit tough for me to adjust to, so I definitely looked up information as I went along if I got stuck, but I came out the other side extremely happy that I went back to them, especially Fallout, I still remember how creeped out I felt the first time I met the master, and the awe I felt when I realized I could convince him to give up on his plans instead of fighting him.
What a fantastic game, so I thank 3 for introducing me to it.

I am a younger guy in my early 20's, and my introduction to Fallout was Fallout 3 as a kid. (A kid too young to be playing Fallout lol.) I liked it and NV, without really understanding the story or world. The largeness of the games in general (and my inability to finish them) created a very cool mystique. And part of that mystique was the two previous games, which I'd never seen or heard of.
I finally decided to play all the games, and sort of rediscovered the series. Ironically, the first Fallout I finished, ended up being the first one! Fallout 1 is amazing! It has so many cool ideas that are executed very well. The music, the villain, the world, the lore, the dialogue options. You and all the other devs did such a great job, all of the future games are basically just remaking or adding onto what was done in the first game. I don't mean that as a negative, as I enjoy the whole series, it's just a testament to how great the first game is. So thank you, and all the other original devs, for creating such a great game!
Also, I'm still holding out hope for an Arcanum remake/reboot/sequel, along with Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 remakes, or a spinoff like NV. It would be amazing to have some of the classic devs work on a new Fallout again, whether it's first-person, or a return to the classic style. Do you think any of this might happen? I'm especially hopeful about Arcanum. Otherwise we probably have a 8+ year wait for a new Fallout. Though, do you think the series should end, or keep going? I've heard I think Chris Avellone talk about nuking the world again, what do you think about that? But anyway, apologies for my rambling and numerous questions, I just really like Fallout, and I appreciate your channel!

I've become a huge fan of Fallout to the point that I'm writing fanfiction of it for myself. I like to imagine a world beyond the games that've been released and stories beyond those we've been given. Hearing you talk about the sorrow and light jealousy you felt not being involved with Fallout 3 made me a little sad. I'm so glad you've let us behind the curtain here and look forward to more of your stories and insight!

What a movie in my mind you created here. Wow. Thank you for sharing this Tim.
I imagine this experience was not unlike the sentiment I assumed a George Lucas (Star Wars) or a Bill Finger (Batman) must've felt.
One of my favorite artists, Trent Reznor expressed a similar situation when Johnny Cash famously covered his song 'Hurt'.
"I'd known where I was when I wrote it. I know what I was thinking about. I know how I felt. Hearing it was like someone kissing your girlfriend. It felt invasive."
"I never got to meet Johnny but I'm happy I contributed the way I did. It felt like a warm hug. I have goosebumps right now thinking about it."
"Having Johnny Cash, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time, want to cover your song, that's something that matters to me. It's not so much what other people think but the fact that this guy felt that it was worthy of interpreting."
    Worthy of interpretaton.
And I think in some way, that's applicable here, because what Bethesda did was make sure that world that you, Leonard and the rest of the Interplay team that worked on Fallout made, could still tell stories. Could still inspire. Could still exist.
And you can feel proud in the fact, that even at this very moment or later in the future, fans will find their way back to your name and your original baby. I am one of them. Thank you.

I discovered Fallout at the ripe old age of 8- my older brother and his friend had installed Fallout 2 on our home PC shortly after release. I saw it in the start menu and didn't know what it was. I struggled with figuring out the intro, later watched my brother play a little... Then picked it up in earnest. I LOVED Fallout 2, even at age 8 it captivated me. I played that game a dozen times probably before I finally got a copy of Fallout and played that too. Even Tactics when it came out. It probably wasn't until Half Life 2 came out that I spent an appreciable amount of time on any other franchise.
Unfortunately I'm among the camp that feels that Bethesda (primarily their writing staff) is unable to fully capture the feel of FO1/2. FO3 transitioned to 3d beautifully in general, just their writing... This series is probably a large reason why I have the sense of humor I do today LOL.
Anyway. Fallout is one of the few pieces of media where the names of many of the creators are etched in to my mind. I am relishing getting to hear Tim's perspective and want to thank him and the rest of the team for creating it. And it must be surreal to see your baby, that people were originally generally dismissive towards during development, get adopted and showered with so much love decades later.

Fallout 3 is my favourite game of all time, and was my first introduction to the series. Whilst you may not have had any direct involvement in that game, I want to thank you for giving us Fallout in the first place, because without you I never would have experienced this incredibly fascinating, haunting and unique franchise.

Oh man, I hadn't seen this one.
Mostly I was in awe and so happy to see all the recognition your Magnum Opus achieved, but then I felt sad at the thought that it's no longer yours and now it's become a Huge thing on itself that no longer reminds you. Its such a shame.
For me, there is no Fallout without Tim Cain.

Im in my 30s, didnt get to play fallout 1 or 2 till waaay later on, once new vegas came out I went back and played fallout 1 and 2. My first experience with fallout was fallout brotherhood of steel for 5 mins.....then when fallout 3 came out I was like, thats what fallout brotherhood of steel was? Lol, end of the day, if it was not for fallout 3, id probably still not of known what fallout really was and possibly many other people. I appreciate all the fallout games as a whole, but fallout 3 did do some good and atleast you can say you are the grandfather or one of the creators of fallout, however way you wanna put it cause I know how much you stress it was a team effort for the creation of fallout. That party sounds like it was dope, id probably drank myself into oblivion at that time considering I was a heavy drinker. Thanks for sharing another of your past events tim. My older brother missed out on showing me fallout and im glad I atleast got into it at a later point in my life and fallout 3 kinda did that.

As someone who plays and enjoys Fallout 76 regularly, every time I boot it I think about the quote from Tim Cain "My idea is to explore more of the world and more of the ethics of a post-nuclear world, not to make a better plasma gun." Bethesda has made very fun games, but the games are literally and exclusively about finding better plasma guns, building bases, and exploring a Mickey Mouse cartoon version of Fallout 1.

9:14 interesting how you didn't get the chance to work on Fallout again, but in a weird twist many of the ex Interplay Fallout/Fallout 2 devs like Avellone and Sawyer got their second chance with New Vegas, and Bethesda also threw a lavish, strange celebrity launch parties for it too.
Were you ever approached by Obsidian to work on New Vegas?

This is an interesting window into the industry at that time but here we already see there the industry had a growing grandiose issue. Celebrities, bands, etc. This is of course is a way to give a treat to the "workers" which were many and at that point couldn't be called anything else but "workers". And all these people having a career and benefits because you, Tim. You and a few other passionate nerds in the 90's and before that came together in small groups and created these powerful experiences that enamored so many people. Sadly today many even don't know your name. Maybe that is why Sid Meier put his name in his games? So you can't forget him. Maybe he is right. Maybe like authors, people like us, should put our names on the cover of our books.
