Tesla Air-Conditioning Hose Fix!

  • This 2013 Tesla Model S was originally designed so that the condensate hose from the air-conditioning came out right on top of the battery pack. In this video, we fix that!
    Please click SHOW MORE!
    While working on the Tesla S, with the battery pack out, it's easy to see where the hose from the air-conditioner is. Unfortunately, it comes out right on top of the battery pack. That's bad for a number of reasons, including rusting out the HV Fuse Cover, water getting in, and stopping the car from working at all!
    In this video the MAIN HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY PACK is REMOVED from the car. I am working in an area towards the front of the car, just behind the front wheels. This are is normally completely filled in by the battery. The hose is question normally can not be seen as it is hidden ABOVE the battery pack.
    See details of the damage to the battery pack because of this in the following video: • WET FUSE!?! | 2013 Tes...
    For another video angle that shows the relationship of this hose location to the battery pack, please watch: • 2013 Tesla Model S - A...
    The output hose is 3/4" OD. I simply got some 3/4" ID hose from the auto parts store, slipped it over the existing hose, and ran it out near the passenger side wheel well.
    The water now drips on the road, INSTEAD of the battery pack!
    Although later versions of the car corrected this flaw, and there was a Service Bulletin on this issue, some cars still were never retroactively repaired.
    The car's service manual is available through Tesla online: service.tesla....

    While battery is dropped you might want to reverse the lower control arm bolts in the rear that can't be removed with battery in place and have to usually be cut. Will save you some trouble in the future.

    Attaching that very long hose, twisting and bending it is bad idea, over the years that hose will eventually get clogged with dirt, soil dust, insect nests etc etc. The AC water 💧 is not pumped out with pressure, it drains and drips. You should have cut the extension hose just a few inches hanging clear underneath the battery pack shelf/lip and you should be fine.

    What is the official tesla recall fix? Do they just extend it, or reroute it? Extending it seemed like an simpler fix imo. Either way, great rebuild. We need new tesla rebuild companies to pop up and refurbish older teslas. Still lots of life in these cars.

      @@TheLobo91 A friend who used to work at Tesla said they added a right angle connector and another section of hose to run it off to the side.
      Based on the fact that the hose through the firewall is just bent down, I didn’t see any need for a right angle connector.

      @@BenjaminNelsonXI guess the 'benefit' would be that you could extend it with the same size, slightly more flexible pipe?

    When the frunk is removed, you say that you can access the A/C hose to route an extension towards the wheel well. Can you also access the battery pack fuse access panel ? Could I be able to change the fuse panel from the top without removing the battery from the car?

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would say no. I haven't had all the plastic out from under the hood, but I bet the fuse panel is covered by other car parts and not easily accessible.
      You also need to remove all the fasteners and cut away the sealant around the fuse cover. Both of those activities require a fair amount of room to work.

    Since the purchase deal is done, can you share how much the car cost and what the listing said was wrong with it?

    • @BenjaminNelsonX
      @BenjaminNelsonX  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The previous owner was originally asking $7,000. I got the car for $5,000.
      It didn't run at all. The HV battery would not activate. The 12V battery was dead. The passenger window was broken (but at least rolled-up.) And the right rear air suspension was completely flat.
      The biggest issue was the BMS_w123_SW_Internal_Isolation error. That basically says that there is water inside the battery pack. There's no way of knowing how bad it is until opening the pack.
      The previous owner got an estimate from Tesla, who would have replaced the battery. That would be $12,000 for the part, plus labor.
      Running cars of this vintage can be found for $12K-$15K. So, the car itself really has next to no value if it doesn't run and would cost as much to fix as it would just to buy a different one.

    It's a known problem and was also the cause of my MS 85D from 2015 battery fault that Tesla took as a warranty claim 2 years ago. But never saw a recall from them, same as the other issues.

      @rjung_ch 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I guess they fix as they go along. So people will get scammed if they don't have the problem and one day it'll be just their bad luck that the problem didn't show up fast enough.

      Do you know if Tesla rerouted the A/C drain hose as part of the repair, or did they just fix the battery and left the drain to cause the problem again in the future?

      Yeah I don't see it..... The hose draining where it is seems fine Currently it wouldn't hurt anything... I mean, if you drove in the rain, the entire bottom underside of the car everywhere would be completely wet.....where that hose comes out there is no open seem to the battery......on a side note air pressure could now force the water to stay in the tube or push it back up
