    Just wondering; if you use koji or chinese rice yeast balls, the starch from the potato can be converted to suger by the mold and then converted to alchol by the yeast. I know that those yeast balls can convert tapioca tuber to wine, so it may work with potato.

      hey, they are chinese yeast balls I use, a blend of koji and yeast together. a symbiotic fermentation as they call it :)

    Can "Universal Yeast" be used instead of yeast nutrients???? And how long does it have to rest after it's done????

      hey, you need both yeast and nutrients or it doesn't work.
      well i will let you know when it's ready. i'm waiting for it myself

      @@sonyaethaniel i guess the sugar wash that's freeze distilled is pretty close, some where around 40%, more of a single malt person :P

    Those fine potato Particles are called Potato starch, its same as cornflour

    Great video Potato wine not one that ever came to my mind, but I do have a small mind. I remember that Potatoes were use in WW2 in beers to help save the grains for food and the beer was known to give you wind, nickname Fart beer, will this have the same effect? and out of interest you did not put anything like Amylase to break down the starches, will the wine have a haze or is it one left to age will clear itself? Well you have me thinking and wondering, can't wait to see how this turns out

      lol, potatoes aren't everyone's 1st choice when brewing a wine. indeed, some beers did have potatoes added along with a little malted grain of various types. not too sure about the farts though :P I made an extravagant version of this wine a while back and apart from a thundering hangover ( too much consumption!) i didn't notice excessive wind.
      I did not add amylase, this will leave it slightly hazy but i wanted to keep this basic wine as simple as possible, it doesn't effect the flavor just the look.
      Over the coming months, I will be doing a few potato wine so i started off with the simplest version :)

      I love history and if you check out the BBC's 2012 - Wartime Farm Christmas They make a version of the wartime beer, my grandfather was a London fireman with his brother in the war and the both of them were home brewers (only wine), no left over peeling was safe from my grandfather and sometimes even the water that the vegetables were cooked in.
      I do remember him using potato peelings in a brew but for what I have no idea other than Sunday dinner is when he would try them out on us, no such thing as a free meal.

      I will have to take a look. I also suffer from the peelings wines ,in the winter months usually
      parsnip is a good one :P
      I usually wait for big gatherings to inflict some of my more wild creations on them, usually they go down well :)

      Your wild creations have you ever done Mushroom wine, not one I've heard of. Just been watching it on Happy Homestead, but please don't worry you are still my main man.

    That is a most effective way to make a simple potato wine. Now the fun is when you add potatoes to a sugar wash then make the extra water go away. :-)

      You can Indeed, I did the carrot cider which is a apple and pear combo and hopefully the local pear tree with be ready soon. I do prefer wild fruits when possible :)

    This looks like it could be fun. Would the potatoes need to be fresh?
    Have a bag going in the bin soon, I wouldn't mind doing something like this instead of dumping them. They're also red roosters not white like yours. Would any of that matter?

      hey, older potatoes are said to make a better flavored wine.
      you don't have to used any particular type just so long as they are potatoes :)
      the part 2 is coming out shortly, you should like how it turns out :)

      What's the racking/bottling time? Currently got Ginger wine in my 5 Gal primary, but thought I would do this in a small 1 gal batch!

      its the standard 1 month for this one, as it's has no enzymes its not a clear one but it does need some aging to mellow out the rocket fuel flavors :P
