As slick as it gets. Bernie sprinkled some fine country based music right over all those early albums.
Bernie Leadon is a phenomenal guitarist!!!!
I absolutely love country licks!👍🎸🤠
Me too!
Awesome as always Mark!
Thanks a ton!
I love Gram Parsons who played with Bernie Leadon. You can cover anything from either one anytime.
Clarence White was amazing.
GP and Grievous Angel are always in my rotation. I love "Brass Buttons", "$1,000 Wedding" and "Cash on the Barrelhead / Hickory Wind" and a bunch of others. James Burton was no slouch on guitar either! Maybe I could do his solo from "Ooh, Las Vegas"!
@@MarkZabel Make sure you get the great Tribute Album by Emily Lou Harris, etc. “Return of the Grievous Angel,” a masterpiece. One of my favorite albums. Find the performance from Sessions on West 54th Street from PBS where they performed the album, pure magic. Perfection.

@@MarkZabelLet’s not forget The Byrd’s Sweetheart of the Rodeo, another classic that features Gram.
It is funny you showed that album because I had the same album, and a guitar book to go along with it, it all the songs that the album had. I gave the album to my brother in-law where I am currently living, I still have the book I used to put the album on and play along using the book that was 50 years ago and now I am trying to learn all over again cause I haven't played in 50 years. I have a bunch of friends in a band called eagle eyes they play tribute to the eagles if you had your eyes closed and heard them you would swear it was the real eagles. Thanks for this lesson.
cool!
Smooth as melted butter Mark ! Well played💯🖤🦋🖤
Thanks again!
Another great video Mark! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it Nick!
❤
Great, Mark. I'm an acoustic player and you can get these licks without bends (sort of) and it's a standard bluegrass lick. You are a guru.
Thanks Robert!
Thanks Z from an early Eagles fan for showing us those Bernie Leadon licks. This old dog learned a new trick from you today which I had totally missed before: barring the 1st & 2nd strings with the pinky and playing the riff/bend on the strings and frets under and behind it with the other fingers. I smacked myself in the forehead on that one. Immediately thought of about ten other things to do with that basic technique. Wow. Thanks man!
Thanks! That's fantastic!!
That technique of baring the E & B with the pinky was a eureka moment for me, too! Thanks again, Mark!
It's true! Bernie was a genius guitar player but he was an even better singer.
Great lick. My introduction to this style came from Pete Anderson on those great Dwight Yoakam songs. Bernie came later for me once I started soaking up every country lick I could find.
Yeah, Pete's a great player.
Yeah, I've heard THAT 1 a few times alright! It's a KILLER!
I wish I could just quickly download your knowledge ❤
Gotta pay your dues man! 😎
Thanks! Maybe in the future ... the distant future. Until then, I'll do my best to keep making interesting videos. Thanks for watching!
Hello mark great video thanks 😁👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for that beautiful lick, Mark! I started playing guitar in my early 20's and that sound seemed unattainable to me. Now, at the young age of 66, I'm back at it with more of a conviction than previous attempts at learning major/minor scales. Your videos are perfect for my learning style! Thanks again! 😎✌🤙
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Amazing lick, thank-you 😊
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Awesome guitar player... always loved Leadon. I'd love you to cover the Flying Burrito Brothers and Parsons-era Byrds. Those two groups blazed the country rock trail before The Eagles or others hit it big (or even existed). The influence of Chris Hillman and Gram Parsons on country rock, and later on Americana, etc., can't be overstated.
I'd add Clarence White to that list as well. I'm partial to Gram's solo work with James Burton on guitar, and Clarence's bluegrass playing and influence. I think Tony Rice used his D-18 until he started endorsing Santa Cruz.
@@MarkZabel Yes, not to forget Clarence. He was a real guitar monster.
Hearts and Flowers
RIP Bernie leddon thise licks are iconic
Bernie is still living in 2023. Randy Meisner is the Eagle who recently passed away.
Bernies cool! He used a B-Bender, Evans String Puller model. Not the usual Parsons White.
Ahh, didn't know that. Thanks!
👍 Nice, thanks
You bet! Thanks for watching!
reminds me of a Clarence White lick from The Byrds
Oh yes, there's a reason for that! Clarence was amazing. Great bluegrass player.
MARK< make more pedal steel licks lessons. Jimi Hendrix 70s session songs used these pedal steel licks guitar they are called oblique bends
We'll see how this one does.
Keep it up!
You bet!
Eagles and other Influences guitarists Electric Guitar Licks, they are Timeless Tunes !!! Thanks & Play On FretBro . . . 👍😎🎸🤘🎼🇺🇸🙏 DDH 8-13-2023.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
See Mason Profit Band from the late 60's very early 70's out of the Midwest, for country rock, with a banjo and the requisite suberb vocals and harmonies that even the Eagles will say they copied from. Great lick, can be used in lots of forms of this sound--thanks for doing and educating.
Thanks!
Excellent video Mark. One question: why play the E major pentatonic down at the 9th fret? Why not play it at the 12th fret like the E minor pentatonic?
Thanks! You can play the E major pentatonic at the 12th. Nothing wrong with that. You'll need to change the fingering completely though. The major issue for most people with respect to the pedal steel lick shown here is that you'll need to bend (and hold) that G-string bend with your pointer (1st) finger.
It's healthy to try the lick in any of the positions. In the E-major at the 4th fret, for example, the bend occurs on the B-string. You won't be able to reach the high note, but you can reach other interesting notes ... gives you a whole new set of licks.
Great video as always! Pointing out players & "cliches" that many of us may overlook!! I will say that the one of the reasons I admire Joe Walsh's playing is to me he's the "King of muting"!!!🙏🙏🙏🤔🤔🤔
Great point!
Mark, I have another option for you instead of doing major surgery on a TELE. I bought and had a Luthier install a Certano G & B Bender on a TELE of mine....Pushing the lever on the G string and holding it, then releasing it later, is a lot easier for me! check it out. Well made too. Like your vids.....keep it up.
Thanks Larry!
You nailed it brother, I always loved Bernies playing style, I think that was really what set the road for eagles. Who said chicken picken wasn't rock and roll 😎🤙
Thank you!
There are two guitar parts to the Peaceful Easy Feelin' lead. There's that rhythm part that precedes the main riff. I have yet to learn this first part but it's cool as hell and it's all Bernie. It starts around 1-54 (left colon out so as not to hyperlink to this video) in the original song and plays as the other guitar starts to pick the bass notes before it goes all out on that A maj bend with the bar on the 14th fret at 2-27. Have you listened to Bitter Creek? Some super acoustic work by Bernie... esp around 4-08. Some nice harmonics thrown in from time to time. Beautiful work by Bernie. Thanks Mark. I really enjoy your videos. P.S., I grew up in Livonia. I believe you were somewhere in suburban Detroit? I'm 62 years old. Started playing bluegrass around 1975. My musical tastes have expanded greatly since then. So has my guitar collection. 😎 Thanks again Mark. sw
Yeah, Bernie's play on the whole album is great, as is Desperado, as you point out. I played strictly acoustic music from 1995 to 2005 (mostly bluegrass and apalachian with a little folk in there too), so I became familiar with Gram Parsons, Clarence White, and Bernie's work. My favorite player in that genre was the late Orrin Star ... and Doc, Tony, Norman, and Big Dan of course. I miss my old bluegrass bandmates ... and playing all that mandolin.
I grew up in Warren, just north of Detroit. Went to school at Wayne State. Spent my evenings playing in Pontiac or on the East Side (Gratiot). Good times.
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you're enjoying the videos!
Those are tough bends, but a great ones! Are you using 9's on that Tele? Thanks for sharing...
My pleasure. I'm using 9's on this one.
@@MarkZabel Thanks Mark! 😀
WTH is a B-Bender? Wouldn't it be easier to get a guitar with a wiggle-stick? Great lesson by the way!
Good question. As shown, it's a mechanical apparatus that, with the pull of the strap, bends up precisely 1 full step (or releases it). It's more precise and quick than bending or using a tremolo.
Hi Mark did you Know Bernie Leadon wrote a book Mark?
I didn't know.
Who plays guitar on the Eagles song "ALREADY GONE"? Some cool guitar riffs, fills and solos on that one
Don Felder, Glenn Frey and Bernie Leadon. Frey and Felder play the solos.
@@MarkZabel Thanks. That one guitar fill with the pinch harmonics is an all time classic
But where does the B-Bender come into it?
He used it for the B-string bends, right?
OK. You just made my night.
my WEEk.
Alright...my month~
Sweet! Glad you liked the video!
Appreciate The Lick..I'll Stick This One In My Back Pocket🤘🤘🙏🙏🤘🎸
My pleasure. It's definitely a favorite of mine.
Sounds a little too modern to be like the stones imo, id say early eagles like taking it easy.
Yes, this is a video about Bernie Leadon ... so definitely the Eagles here!
Turtle Speed country guitar player
The Eagles had a lot of guitar players. It's hard to keep them all straight.
Bernie was a founder. That one's pretty easy! :) But I understand.
The Eagles' early stuff is their best stuff in my opinion, so now I'll know to mention Bernie Leadon when all those other Eagles names start getting mentioned. Those early country rock licks of his are really important, and Bernie is underrated and overlooked. I didn't know Bernie was a founder. In my opinion, The Eagles are one of those rock bands who have had too many band members! The band seems to always revolve around Don Henley... @@MarkZabel
@@ThaiThom I totally agree with you!
When the Eagles lost Bernie they lost me. I could admire and respect their later work, but without really liking it.
Same. Never got into later Eagles.
9's or 8's? lol - ouch!
9's. I used to use 10s on my 25.5" scale guitars, but not any more.
You're right - use a Gibson - I've got skinny top / flat bottoms on my SG - much better - I can hold the (bend) G string with more control - thx - you're great!@@MarkZabel
