- They woke you in the night
A glare from bright headlights
Sentries in a row
You watched from a front window
Through sleepy eyes you saw the scene
And felt as if a dream
Had come to life
Caught by surprise
Protection in disguise
A high barricade
The price too high to pay
The late night dancers filled the street
And stopped as if a dream
Had come to life
A wail and a cry
Blue lights flashing by
In shadows of the trees
A zone runs in between
The young boy-soldiers filled the streets
And moved as if a dream
Had come to life
Can it be a nightmare?
Will you wake and still be there?
So you try to run
Frightened you're the one
Left inside
Can it be a nightmare?
Will you wake and still be there?
So you try to run
Frightened you're the one
Left inside

Overwhelmingly underrated.
This is one of my top 3 or 4 favorite Camel songs. Weekly, usually more often, the main hook gets in my head and I find myself humming it or tapping along to it. So hauntingly beautiful and poignant while also being infectiously catchy!
Nothing to say. Or maybe one word. Outstanding.
in a damned good way ..
I was born in Iraq 1996.. but this song made me feel as I were in 1984 and try to cross to West Berlin, and I had just been discovered by vopos police !
Fantastic song from a criminally underrated album!
Musicisti eccellenti brano altissimo
you hear the dark atmosphere from the eigthies perfect in this song. gives me shivers
Guitar work is fantastic here!
Proggy version of the police's invisible sun. Great composition. Late Camel is extremely underrated.
This is just as good as Moonmadness or Mirage
i was living in the 70ies in west berlin they captured exactly the atmosphere öf the cold war bravissimi
I first heard this song when I was 15 years old. I was in shock. Then came Marillion, Yes, Jethro tull, Asia, and many more.
How old are you?
@@hakhamaneshgoodarzi5925...The song came out in 1984 and he first heard it at 15.
What a great song to capture the fear and mood of the Eastern Bloc!
Amazing song. Camel rules.
Esas rolas tan hermosas me hacen viajar a otro mundo sideral, un buen toke y estás rolas es garantizado
It´s AMAZING SONG !!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely great song! When do we get it on Spotify?
VOlksPOlizei=People's Police is what Vopos stands for. The "s" in the end is just a plural. The real abbreviation was VOPO.

Always musically excellent, CAMEL's weakness is that they have never had an outstanding lead vocalist and often have (like YES) lyrics that are full of imagery, but somehow not personal. I will always be a fan of CAMEL, but The Snow Goose is my favorite because they had the balls to release a Rock Concerto, without any vocals or lyrics. Their musical skills were on full display, with no vocals to distract from a great piece of modern Classical composition and arrangement.
with respecting your opinion, I want to object by reminding that Camel's one and only continuous member was their lead vocalist, guitarist and flute player Andrew Latimer. Who makes Camel, Camel in my opinion.
@@berkeyildiz8667 I am a big fan of Peter Bardens, (Andy Ward too) and that is why I have a special fondness for the first four albums. I especially love The Snow Goose because they chose NO vocals, which was both courageous and wise imho. It was not a commercial success, but really shows off how good these guys were as pure musicians.
@@57curtnevan definitely agree with you, their songs with no lyrics hit kind of different.
@@57curtnevan Songs without lyrics is my favorite kind of music. Takes a special kind of musical genius to convey such emotions without uttering a single word
Don't forget Richard Sinclair. For a brief time, they had a really good vocalist. Shame they never keep him more time

Vopos=VOlksPOlizei=People's Police. The "s" in the end is a plural, I guess. The official short was VoPo.
Thank you for sharing this information about "Vopos". I had a dear friend who was born and raised in the the former East Germany (GDR). Incidentally, her father was a police officer stationed in East Berlin for a time. Being from the West, I could not imagine growing up under such tyrannical, authoritarian rule.
It was very far from being tyrannical, it was indeed authoritarian but without authority you can see how a country is destroyed. Look at Armenia, look at Georgia, look at Ukraine, look at most of central Asia.
