people who only rely on motivation dont make it very far. When things get really tough you WILL NOT have motivation whatsoever. Motivation is inconsistent and untrustworthy. Its discipline and staying focused that gets the job done at the end of the day.,

*The Secret:* BUDS is designed to slowly deplete the nutrients that your body and mind use for resiliency. Once depleted, what remains is a candidate's basic personality traits (who you really are). These traits cannot be changed through diet, exercise, coaching, or mental conditioning. Up and until the first day of training, you've given the world your ambassador; the person you've been pretending to be since birth. *We're all crazy, guys. B.U.D.S. will reveal what flavor of crazy you are.*

Anyone can be motivated when you are sitting in a nice warm room with all the normal luxuries of life at your disposal. But the minute you get out there into the suck, that motivation drops like a rock. You might think you have what it takes, but unless you've been through it you really have no idea.

Disagree. When you have all sorts of comforts, there isn't any intrinsic motivation. When you don't have comforts, there is motivation to get out of it. The difference is that if you already have motivation, the first scenario would be more productive.

On the last day, and after 46 miles full of all kinds of exciting evolutions , we had a 3 mile ruck march and I remember falling asleep for a second or two while marching. I think the idea of training like you're already in is perfect. Not only it does improve your physical condition, but also test out if you actually wanna be in there, because that's gonna be your life for the next few years or more.
I remember the first time I watched this video, I do dream about join SF. But I can't do 20 push-ups, run for 1 mile, a single pull-up. At first I am certainly lack of self discipline, I would look for excuses to skip training such as "it's gonna rain", "I didn't eat enough", "I ate too much". So I manage to find one of the former member of the frog man unit in my country, and start training with him.
Rules simple, whenever he calls, always answer with a yes and show up. It's painful, but over time I start to learn how to endure the pain, the fatigue and the voice in my head keeps saying "you are gonna hurt yourself". Three month later I can do 50 push ups, run roughly 4 miles and 5 pull ups. Not much comparing to these guys but I feel so happy with the improvement. Thanks for being so honest about the reality instead of making some stupid click bait.

When I was in the marines we were in Coronado doing some amphib training. I was heading into the chow hall, outside were a group of guys wearing the green numbered helmets and white t shirts. They were waiting to go into get chow, a white pickup truck pulled up and they hosed them down with water and then relieved them for 15 minute chow time. These guys were all shivering as they went through the chow line. I'll never forget how miserable they looked

    • @OceanSwimmer201

Definitely shivering most of the time in BUD/S. I remember we we're allowed to "sleep" for 2 hours during the 5 1/2 days of hell week. They sprayed us with a fire hose before the 2 hour sleep..so we actually didn't get to sleep because we were all shivering and soaking wet.

I was stationed at the Naval Anphibious Base in Coronado and watched many classes of Bud/s endure the suck and to say you have to be tough is an understatement. Yes strength is a needed requirement but I would argue mental strength is more important. If you can wrap your mind around it your body will follow but if you have doubt you will fail. Stamina is probably the second only to mental strength. If your a weight lifter but lack the stamina of continued physical exertion especially aerobic exercise ie running your ass off then you have no chance. Strong mind, strong body and tons of stamina are a must and just remember Bud/s is only the beginning.

Seems like in US Army Green Berets the toughest part of the physical side of training is long marches with heavy rucksacks on, sleep deprivation and way lower than average food rations. How does it stack up against BUD/ S PT???.
At first it'd seem like the mental side of the candidate should be the defining success factor, wouldn't it??.
Life is a Special Operation, you've lived through one and come to know the counterpart in combined training exercises, it may even be in real world live firing scenarios, could you just yield your bare bones opinion on both physical rites of passage???.

I agree with you about the Green Beret candidate training. It still gonna suck, but not as bad as BUDS. And yes, many former SEALs would say that 80-90% is mental attitude. You can never be fit enough to say that you weren't smoked at some point during BUDS. The point is to push past the pain, sleepless nights, and hunger while at the same time be a team player.

FYI, the current wait time for BUD/S is 3 years for enlisted and 5 years for Officers. That means you need to start your service THEN serve for those years BEFORE you begin training. Also officers have to complete SOAS before they begin their contract, that assessment is done only one week a year too…

The likes of Navy SEAL training is more than just tough. It requires people with a very special make up that simply cannot be trained.
So that means they are looking for a very particular type of physiology just as the Airforce does for fighter pilots or NASA does for astronauts.
Not everybody can do technical or combat diving. Some people simply will lose coordination or awareness when in water even though they may be the toughest most brutal athlete that could out run anything.

bighand69 as long as they see you push yourself til you your body gives up instead of your mind your good to be a seal... you just gotta be okay with giving up what you like and push what you need to do first it builds character. But most of all if they see you pushing over your body and physical limit there’s really no way you can fail. Unless of course you hurt yourself

I agree, in large part, that it would be difficult to train (but not impossible) the resiliency and tenacity needed to be a SEAL. All of the SOCOM units are looking for the same thing, but in slightly different proportion. Rangers, SEALs, and Green Berets are different, but share a common core set of attributes.

Got a question for you or anyone else in SOF who could comment: what sort of mentality gets people through selection? (not just BUD/s, but for all branches)
I always hear of the BUD/s failures/quitters who simply signed up for the physical challenge, but what about those who pass?
Do passing students indicate some sort of drive/desire to be a warfighter? Do they tend to exemplify any personality qualities? Does having a degree or years of work experience make any difference?
The only anecdotal evidence I know of is a highschool roided up wrestling/football player who went through SFAS but ultimately failed out. Was the ultimate PT stud kinda dude, but joined only cause it seemed like a challenge and he knew he could pass the physical aspects without fail. Can't remember what MOS he got reclassified to.

For reference: I went to Navy boot camp in Great Lakes back in October of 1988. This was before everyone could see everything by means of the Internet. I had "heard" of the Navy SEALS, but knew little in terms of details. We did not have "class 234" as a reference, because they did not allow civilians that kind of access.
At Great Lakes, one of the first things they did was sit your group down in a classroom, turn off the lights, and show you a VHS recording of SEAL training, detailing what those guys go through. Then, it was "inside info." You got to seen what civilians did not get to see.
Then, they had the nerve to turn around and ask for volunteers.
My friends, I have never been so QUIET, in my life, as I was at that moment. I was afraid to even voice the words "oh HELL no" in case they might misinterpret one of the words.

I’ve always wondered...the US Navy recently identified a need for greater preparation of its Recruits/ brand new Sailors for BUD/S and implemented things such as the 800 Divisions, NSW Prep School, & even screening with a recruiter to send better prepared Sailors to BUD/S. After all, the SEALs are probably the greatest recruitment tool the US Navy has. I see the point of the Navy making these changes because Navy Boot Camp doesn’t really prepare you for such a strenuous course. I’d say it’s a really smart move.
Anyone think the Air Force should do the same because their Boot Camp is even easier than the Navy’s (no offense)? I know they have a AFSOC prep course AFTER USAF Boot Camp, but I imagine a USAF version of an 800 division DURING Boot Camp could only help Airmen even more.

lol, Air Force basic, for me, was definitely tougher than Navy Officer Indoctrination School by a large margin.
Don't get it twisted, while USAF basic appears physically easier, the demand is on increasing attention to detail and critical thinking skills. The USAF doesn't miss a beat on this.
I would even go as far as to say that I had to overcome more in USAF basic than I did in Navy SERE school (in large part due to my own personal development).
