Wood Turning #59 A Fig and Cedar Lighthouse

- A mile down the road there is a very cool lighthouse... the Sheringham Point Lighthouse... I've seen it lots of times and it suddenly came into my head that I should try and turn one!
So... I gathered up the woods that I would need and went to work! I started with the central shaft of the tower and hollowed it out... more to keep it from splitting that anything, although I see it has taken on more of an ovoid shape now... and one could keep a map of how to get to the lighthouse in it I suppose!
The cutting of the branch on the band saw was my first attempt at it and I thought it worked quite well! I wanted the walls and the abutments to be the same kind of wood as they are the same colour and I was surprised by how well that worked! I have had a band saw for many years and this is the first time I have been able to get it to track the way I want... (I finally tried a wider blade!) I can see that I will use this a lot more in the future!
The Cedar base has a kind of cool feature to it too... the dark ring cut into it on the one corner, has sand still embedded in it... I know that means that while I was cutting the corners I was putting nicks in my skew but they are all sharpened out now! It does give it a look of authenticity!
I hope you enjoy this as much as I did

Looks like a lighthouse to me. Very nice. I'll say that that's something I would have never thought of, and there are lighthouses all over the place where I am.
Hello Jordan:
It's funny isn't it? I have been looking at these things for a lot of years now... ah well! Everywhere you look!
Thanks for watching
Larry

Larry that was a very enjoyable video and your work is exceptional. I like the "artist's rendition" It looks great to me. What type of lighting did you use and where can it be bought? Very Well done!
Hello Stephen:
I am afraid that the lighting I have is an old fluorescent aquarium lamp (that I have drilled a couple of holes through the top and mounted it under the cabinet over the lathe.), a couple of 60w light bulbs (make that 3) and the sun! Not a lot to buy there!

Thanks Larry
Brilliant Larry, a great "take" on the original lighthouse.
Take care
Mike
Hello Mike:
Like I said, once I put the picture in the video I realised that there were a number of differences! Maybe I will have to try another one to see if I can actually make it look the same! Should make a good seller at the Shirley Market in the summer!

Hello Larry,
Great project. You are certainly very creative. I love your skew work. I'm still a little apprehensive about this tool as I had some spectacular catches in early days but I'm slowly getting my confidence with it.
Look forward to your next project.
Best wishes,
Alan.
Hello Alan:
That is all it takes.... some confidence!!
There are lots of other tools to use... this is just what I find the most comfortable to play with!
And my little skew I think was made over there! It is a WOLF and I really like it...gets into all kinds of tight spaces!!

This was another great video Larry, I built a lighthouse in a bottle some years ago.
I will have to retrieve it from the loft and see if it still works. I must say though its not as nice as yours.
All the best
Tony
Hey Tony:
To be able to turn a lighthouse in a bottle must take some coordination!
Mine is just a see what we can make!

Wow, I can't believe we are both working on the same topic. I am also working on a lighthouse. I finished the turning and still need to do the finish, also edit and upload for Friday.

You have inspired me to go buy an oval skew.
Frank B I don't know whether it is the tool or the way it can be used... but bear this in mind when you are looking... the small skew that I use a lot... is flat... I find that they still get used the same way... if you already have a flat skew.. I'm just saying! But who am I to stand in the way of somebody who wants to buy a tool! Too bad I didn't sell them! Hope you have fun which ever way you go! Thanks for watching Larry
Great video has always Larry, Love the Lighthouse project.
Thanks for sharing. Regards Harry
Hello Harry:
Making the abutments was the hardest part! But what kind of project would it be without a hard part?
