    Dave, sometimes the parents are ignorant about education because they are low income, which is a bad combination. Those parents believe that education in general will get there kids a higher salary. My mom for example believes that my brother's co-worker who is working with him at a restaurant, doing the exact same job, gets paid more than my brother just because he is a full time college student. My brother is paid minimum wage.
    I personally believe that it is sad when people are ignorant of their ignorance.

      That is a very good point, they don't know what they don't know sometimes. However as a parent there should be some onus on you to learn more than you know now so that you can be a useful resource to your children. I didn't finish college but I consider myself someone who is learning things everyday. A learning mindset is important for growth, and I don't see many parents learning. Many go with the status quo.

    • @MrsThollo
      @MrsThollo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JohnGrayFinance I agree but realistically a lot of teens' can't depend on their parents to do this. That's just a fact. Screaming at parents to parent is not going to help a child without "parents" and who sees college as a way to avoid perpetuating a lifestyle of poverty and hardship...So while I do agree with you, there are so many variables that I just hate blanket statements like these.

      Another problem may be that for the parents generation a degree in anything could get you a job. Both my parents got their Computer Science degrees in the early 80s. My dad told me about a woman he worked with had a degree in Equestrian Studies and was able to get a good paying job at the bank he worked for both of them fresh from college.
      Back when they got degrees so few people had one that a degree in German Polka History probably could get a good paying job. But now the job market is different and a lot of parents don't get that. Now companies can be choosy about the degree a person can get the job with.

    • @louyht7

      A lot of parents are like this. They always think their kids should get college education especially at 4 years university but they don't know if their kids will fit for college or not. Some kids will take on load of debts, get themselves under so much stress and maybe choose suicide as their only option for one way ticket out of this life because they couldn't take it anymore.

      Congrats, that's cool. It's so much harder to do this than just 5 or 10 years ago so a genuine achievement-- I know plenty of people going overseas and staying cuz the prospects are better. I also got debt-free a couple years ago, now the problem is health care and daycare costs which are straining our finances. Not as bad as student loans but they're almost unbearable to deal with in the US (much easier abroad).

    What a lot of people don't realize is, college degrees do NOT appreciate in value. They depreciate. How long is it before the average degree is obsolete? Well, in the United States today, over 317,000 waiters and waitresses have college degrees. Students in the United States are attending college just to attend college. Almost any student, regardless of their academic performance in high school, can get into some sort of college. There was a time when you had to EARN your way into college. Higher education was considered a privilege and NOT a right. That isn't the case anymore. Anyone can get in, so long as they have the ability to borrow money.

    • @Omegeddon
      @Omegeddon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The problem is the bar keeps rising. Back in someone like Dave's day a degree was relatively inexpensive and it was actually respected. So naturally they told their kids to go to college so they can do as well or better than they did with their degree or people they know with their degrees. So now due to the demand college prices are going up exponentially and you have a flood of people with Business or other STEM degrees over saturating the market which allows employers to be pickier. If everyone has a BBA or BSA then it becomes the new HS diploma and you're back where you started. Except now you're in debt

    • @jielangone7475
      @jielangone7475 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Omegeddon first of all, STEM degrees are not over saturating in the market, accounting is not even STEM degree. I was in STEM program. if someone tells you that they are with STEM degree or accounting degree and still can't pay off their loan, something is wrong . You do not hear STEM degree loaner complain as frequent as other degree loaner everywhere, for real.

    Dave's main point is that any degree you earn should have a direct application to the marketplace so you can actually get a good paying job with the degree upon graduation. The vast majority of colleges and universities are for-profit businesses, which means that if you want to waste your money on something useless, they will definitely be more than happy to take your money even if you end up on the streets with the useless degree. Universities should have "Inc." after their names. Schools offer these waste-of-time classes to make money!! The problem with academics in general is the disconnect between the education world and the real world marketplace.

Unfortunately, some of these useless courses are require to earn a degree depending on your program you are pursuing. If you want to make a education affordable, then the best way is to change the rules of the game in order to help people to no only graduate but to save cost. Our education system is a very big bureaucratic system that does not care for the student.

Between free classes and my GI Bill, I emerged free and clear and was able to get a full academic scholarship for the remaining two years at a state college and graduated with a degree in Comp Sci. Zero student debt and went forth from there. There are creative ways to get through college, but each year that goes by it gets harder.

If everyone git engineering degrees do one would be around to be chefs ir make music or films. Basically if there weren't arts majors no one with normal jobs would have anything to do on their days off. I have a performaning arts degree but i was smart in that i changed from just a music degree to a comm arts interdisciplinary studies major with an emphasis is performing arts. Film directors are impressed with my performing degree. News stations etc are impressed with the comm arts part. Im currently doing both those jobs. That will part time jobs/internships in ur field while attending will get u far. Im not made for engineering. God gave me other talents. You must do what God gave you the talent & passion for, just be smart about how you pursue it. Always get an education.

      I also did an Interdisciplinary Studies degree and it has worked out really well for me so far!! Really opens doors in 2 (related) fields. I did concentrations in Earth Science and Geography with a GIS minor. I can apply for jobs that want an Earth Science degree and those that want Geography. Please only accept subsidized loans (accumulates interest AFTER graduation). Try to avoid unsubsidized loans (accumulates interest Everyday and After graduation). Deduct interest from taxes. Please avoid out-of-state tuition, private student loans, and for-profit colleges like Everest and ITT Tech. Take courses at community colleges (they are legit). To get more aid, prove struggles of parents (or yourself) to financial aid office: Foreclosure, repossession, bankruptcy, debt settlements, separation, divorces, death, new child, hospitalization, unemployment, reduction in income, food stamps, failure to pay taxes, wage garnishment, incarcerations, terminal illness or condition, etc. Choose credit unions. Banks are for-profit. Do not drop out of college = Less likely to repay debts

    The garbage class could be very useful for an engineer working on green energy. I do agree the other classes are crazy, but depending on the focus of the decomposition class it might not be that crazy. They could study the methane produced from landfills and sewers and convert that into usable energy. Many large cattle farms use technology from the manure to power their farms.

    I agree education is valuable. I do not agree FORMAL education is valuable. A degree is just a paper that says you spent 4 years of learning something. The paper costs $200K. Online learning is free. I can spend 4 years learning online (self study and taking free online courses on Coursera), and work on my own projects, bootstrap a startup and there's a high chance I'll end up learning more and having more real life experience and technical skills than if I would from a college education.

    The government repayment programs help recent grads to some degree but they do nothing for older borrowers who have been paying for years. The sad truth is, student loan servicers can make huge amounts of money all out of proportion to what was actually loaned, thanks to Congress. How much money do they really need to make and why is that good for society? I have yet to hear Dave Ramsey or other gurus address that question. Or did I miss something?

      S => bio, Che,and phy. Remember the 2008 financial crisis, a physics major who worked for Leman brother figured out something wrong with the model of their product, then short sell their product, later housing and mortgage bubble busted. That cause many people go back to school because of bad economy reality. But I don't agree it is unfortunate though, they are marketable because maybe the possibility of pay it off form STEM or certain type of degree loaner is much higher than other degrees combined in general. If there are some people do some professional research on that, things would be much clear as a pic.

Get paid an average salary of $40-50k that is comparable to an average starting undergrad salary. (You also get paid while you are eating, working out, and sleeping at the firehouse!) Best job out there if you want to help people and you are physically fit!

    I'm kind of starting to hate Dave Ramsey, or atleast his (part of) philosophy on student loans. No, you shouldn't go to a 80k per year college, and you should go to a CC first, but I hate how he fails to remember that some people are obligated by their parents to go, and at the same, their parents haven't saved diddley squat for them (like my mom).
    Plus it's harder for teens to find jobs, as many adults are taking minimum wage jobs. It took my brother almost a year to find his job.
    And don't forget that they cost of college rises every year Dave. You seem to forget that. Don't forget inflation.

    • @Allaiya.
      @Allaiya. 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Well you are not obligated to go by your parents. The choice is still yours to make. They can't force you to do anything.
      Yes, my parents pushed me to go and didn't save squat. But I was also pushed by high school teachers and guidance counselors and the popular idea in general that college = good future earning potential. As high school kids you trust your parents and those adults around you, but then you realize later that they are just as ignorant when it comes to money.
      In the end though, where I went to school, how many loans I took out, my major (business) was still my call and my mistake to make. A $50k mistake that seemed rather hopeless when I graduated in Dec 2009 taking a commissioned job making almost minimum wage. My parents didn't learn because they thought grad school would be a good idea even though I'd have to take out even more student loans to pay for it.
      I didn't listen to them. Fast forward and now I'm debt free, tripled my salary, and my new work will pay for me to get a graduate degree if I want to go. So lesson learned. Do what feels right to you based off your own research.

      My cousin got married and her mother in law bought them a new car...... On her son's credit! Yes he ended up paying for most of it. Sure she paid a little bit so it's not as absurd as if sounds.
      Point is when you're 18 (honestly before), you're not enslaved to your parents' bad decsion making.
      "But it's not that simple for me." No. It is that simple. Take responsibility for your own life, no exceptions.

    It seems that every job that actually pays well requires a college degree. So many people wish they would've just went to college and others who wish they didn't go at all. It's a personal decision at the end of the day. I just can't stand those people who go get a liberal arts degree and don't want to teach or go to grad school. Even though I am gonna be an English major, I plan to go to grad school right after for a Family Therapist degree. If you're going to major in a liberal art and take out loans, have a logical plan.

    I like Dave and I'm sure he knows what an elective is. A course is different from a degree. COURSES on Beyonce, Tupac, and Lil Kim are used to enlighten those of us who may be a tad close-minded, sheltered, etc. Also, sometimes taking such an elective during gen ed courses keeps school interesting while one awaits to start coursework in their major. I made sure to take a "fun" elective each semester. I understand he was trying to get laughs and make a point so I'll let this one go. BTW: Columbia College is a school for artsies and has a reputation in Chicago.
