    I once saw a documentary about her which included interviews with her in her later years. She attested that she left Paris after the war "because it was no longer interesting." Naturally, she made no mention that a large percentage of the French population wanted to shave her head and string her up.

    It's important to remember that the events here affected real people who are living today. The area in France where my mother was born was occupied by Nazis when she was 14. She saw jewish friends and neighbors taken off, first to Orléans then to extermination camps. Her family had been locally prominent in the previous century, but now was viciously divided between collaborators and resistors. After the war, she saw female collabotators stripped naked and forced to walk village streets while angry neighbors threw stones and filth at them. People she knew executed others she knew or knew of. She became a fashion model in Paris in the very early years after the war, before models were glamorous and widely known. She had a deep, abiding dislike and disregard for Chanel, always calling her a sell-out and traitor. Collaborators caused real harm among their countrymen.

    • @lon3don
      @lon3don 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Chanel is long dead, the business is largely Jewish owned, so the Nazi connection has become irrelevant.

      @@MoofManiac I totally agreed with you. My mother was traumatized by seeing the Jews in her village, families who had been part of the community for centuries, marched off Orléans and then to Germany and extermination. This made my family very sensitive to anti-Semitism, and I see it today growing a new head on university campuses recently, masquerading as "anti colonialism."

    I never knew about her collaboration with the Nazis. That is certainly a blemish on her character. She was a gifted designer. It's too bad that some who are born into humble beginnings forget and become greedy and self-absorbed. People should never forget and keep their humanity. That's a far better narrative for history.

      You could be right.. I knew about her "collaborating" with Germans, but..... was highly surprised, when just recently reading Daniel's Steel book "Spy", in which she tells by the words of the heroine, who became a secret agent for Britain Special Service during WWII and leading missions behind enemy lines, that she was parachuted in France where she had to make acquaintances with high rank Germán officers So, she headed to Paris, to hotel Ritz, where she was supposed to get great help in making those meetings from....... Coco Chanel, and the latest alongside provided her with the best attire needed for evening occasions. So, in the book, Coco Chanel was clearly pictured as an agent helping Britain and French Resistance to fight with Nazi Germans. I believe, she might be a double agent. And, by the way ... the agents were to keep a secret they had worked for Secret Services for twenty years. So, she couldn't legally defend herself. On the other hand.... such agents never quit, at least just go on providing any helpful information whenever they live, and whatever they do....
