Israeli SP66: A Modern Mauser Sniper

  • Around 1980, Israeli purchased a batch of modern Mauser SP66 precision rifles to supplement or replace their stocks of M14 and Mauser K98k sniper rifles. This new rifle was based on the Mauser 66 sporting rifle action, and had been developed by Mauser in the 1970s to meet the new demand for serious snipers’ rifles for the new modern counter-terrorism agencies like GSG-9. It offered features like an adjustable cheek rest, magnificent trigger, and excellent mechanical accuracy. The IDF equipped them with a variety of different optics including Kahles, Nimrod (both 6x and 10x), and Swarovski. They were eventually replaced by newer Mauser SP86 rifles, and surplussed out, to be purchased mostly by Springfield Armory and imported into the US.

    The reticle is called a ‘103’ reticle and is also used by the Singapore Armed Forces in the Steyr SSG-69 P1. It can be found as an option in the catalog for the Kahles ZF series rifle scope available online. I have a strong suspicion that this optic shown in the video is made by Photonic, which one of the producers of the ZF series scopes.
    I enjoyed the video thoroughly as a sniper rifle enthusiast, not many people know about this rifle and resources on it are hard to come by.

      John Galt West Germany didn’t call itself West Germany. The official name was (and still is) officially called the Bundesrepublik Deutschland (meaning Federal Republic of Germany). East Germany was officially the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (German Democratic Republic) and was not recognized by West Germany as legitimate. West Germany considered East Germany to be an illegitimate puppet state that had no rightful claim to rule any part of the divided Germany. West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer claimed that West Germany had the exclusive legitimate mandate to govern the whole of Germany in 1949. That policy lasted until 1973, when the West German Government recognized the GDR as being, if not a legally legitimate government, at least a de facto government in East Germany.

    • @cocotoni1977
      @cocotoni1977 5 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      I certainly do remember a bunch of West German products marked as such back in the day. My guess would be that “Made in Germany” mark was added at the time the guns were imported to the US. At that time the Germany was united, and in fact what would be the purpose of stamping where the gun was made in the first place, in English on top of it? The grunt carrying the rifle wouldn’t care, the company producing it wouldn’t care much either I believe, it’s ATF that cared about such details.

    • @dfwai7589
      @dfwai7589 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For far competition it would have to be at 500+ meters and the WA2000 would still probably win by nothing else if it's semiautomatic action and larger capacity.

    • @dfwai7589
      @dfwai7589 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @toeff7852 well yes actually. If you're able to accurately engage multiple targets at once and at not have to worry about reloading then I don't think it's a stretch to say that you would be a more effective sniper

    • @dfwai7589
      @dfwai7589 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @toeff7852 no their not and the type of sniping to which you are referring is preformed (rather annoyingly) by a drone and a hellfire. Today's sniper is most often engaging multiple targets in a convoy or who are assaulting a position. You're argument about bolt guns would've be valid 30+ years ago, it is not today. And before you bring up "well the WA2000 is 30 years old" it is also a purpose built sniper rifle. It will win. Unless we are going to measure down to the millimeter and using accuracy as the single gold standard for winning the WA will win by a mile. It holds more ammo, it fires faster, it reloads faster, it is lighter (by several pounds mind you) it is using a much newer system designed specifically for accuracy. The difference between a .25 and a .05 MOA rifle is that if you found some magic gun powder that gave you infinite range then you could hit a nickle on the moon. Impressive? Yes, practical? No, not really.

    • @dfwai7589
      @dfwai7589 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @toeff7852 also Ian makes clear that this is an IDF rifle. If it was used by police forces that was a grandfather in or unofficial.

    • @dfwai7589
      @dfwai7589 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @toeff7852 bud your simply wrong and it's clear by the fact that you haven't been able to rebuff any of what I've said. The WA2000 would win. There is no question, there is no argument, there is no discussion. An Inrangetv test of the rifles would be to determine which weapon is more combat or competition effective, not which rifle is more mechanically more accurate. The only, singular reason that bolt guns are used in military service as sniping weapons today is because of range. An auto cycling weapon has to take some of the energy away from the bullet in order to run it's action and thus reduces it's over all velocity and range. That's it, they serve no other purpose. Oh and this two ways of waging war thing? Yeah everything nation that can just bomb somebody is. Doesn't mean it's more effective, just means that they don't have to risk the lives of thier country men.

    "Special Ball", the M118 and the improved M118LR are designated as sniper ammo, not "match" any longer. The current issue match ammo is M852, which was derived from the original "M118 Match" in the '70s. M118 started off being made for the M40 and XM21, and used bullets from the .30-06 M72 Match round, which were made in-house at Lake City. M852 uses the Sierra 168 gr MatchKing bullet, is marked "Match only, not for combat use" on the box and has tactile marks around the head end of the case to facilitate differentiation from "combat" ammo in the dark. This was done because of JHP projectiles being a no-no under Hague and Geneva. This was resolved when the match type JHP bullets were approved for combat use in the '90s. With the ascendance of ARs in the Hi-Power discipline, M852's days are numbered.
    About that time, M118 had become degraded due to Lake City switching from match-grade brass and primers to ball-grade brass and staked-in machine gun primers. The bullet quality was also suffering due to wear on the forming dies, with weights varying from 172 to 175 grains. M118LR was developed by going back to match brass and friction-fit match primers and the selection of a replacement bullet. The Sierra MK 168 was tried but didn't work out because of the boat-tail's geometry; a deal was made with Sierra that resulted in the design of the 175 gr MK which coincidentally has the same boattail as the original 180 MK. The powder was originally H4895, but that's being tweaked by the new contract loader, Federal. In fact the round now has Gold Match components, including the new, as yet unannounced powder.
    Sniper's Hide has an extensive article regarding M118LR.

      That's why the stock is based on the Anschutz Supermatch stock then. And Gehmann is most known for target sight components, irises etc.

      As I recall, Herr Gehmann won the 300 m free rifle competition in the 1936 Olympics using a special Mauser rifle in 7x57 (yea!). The score stood for many years. He was behind the M66 design. It's a very handy hunting rifle because quick change barrel (and calibre) feature, allowing the owner to in effect have several rifles with only one registeration. Mauser offered cased sets with an action and several different barrel/scope combinations.

    The SP66 looks like it would be an easy gun to shoot, especially from a recoil perspective. I wouldn't want to try and fire it from a standing free-hold position. But prone and bipod it looks fun.
    Also, it just looks nice.

    God, that is beautiful. I love old school, wooden stocked, bolt action rifles over the polymer and plastic stocked guns we see a lot of today. I would reach for a Kar98k waaaayyyy before I would reach for a L118. Going off of looks alone.

    "They have a number of advantages over the Mauser 98 design". Well, yes and no. The Model 66 was Mauser's attempt to come up with something 'new', and it's certainly that. But it's entirely debatable whether the design is a 'better' bolt action for military/sniper purposes. The action on the 66 is certainly shorter, and certainly innovative from a design perspective, but probably not as robust or as reliable as the older 98, features that are highly desirable in a military rifle. For example, the 66, while being 'neat', doesn't incorporate the ejection/extraction system of the 98 which even today is unequaled in bolt action designs.

    I have a Mauser 66 with a .243 barrel on it. Would love to find a .308 barrel to swap out (they’re built to easily swap different caliber barrels depending on your bolt type).
    Mine says ‘Made in West Germany’ still. Beautiful rifle.

      Mauser were also building very good match rifles at that period in time. It looks like they simply added a three round mag and a muzzle break to the then current 300m Free Rifle. Mauser were using the 66 action for that anyway. I have a friend who used to shoot 300m back then, she used one in a standard rifle configuration alongside Sarah Cooper in the GB Team.
