- Mayor Pete Buttigieg joined the IOP for a conversation on the future of America, Democracy, and his political career. Mayor Buttigieg discussed his plans to join the 2020 presidential race after his current term of Mayor of South Bend, Indiana and described his vision for America. Mayor Pete also discussed his new book, Shortest Way Home: One Mayor’s Challenge and a Model for America’s Future. This conversation was moderated by Sara Burnett of the Associated Press.

There are a number of Democratic Presidential hopefuls who pale into insignificance when this guy opens his mouth. He is seriously at the front of the pack. Not enough people know it as yet, but they need to, and fast!

I thoroughly agree. His commitment to answer the questions with clarity and intelligence and to not do the typical politician weasel-worded half-answer dance-around (Sarah Palin was the worst) can only raise the bar at the Democratic debates.

Our country needs Mayor Pete right now. I have been watching all of his interviews and town halls, even from years back, and I'm blown away by his intelligence, his honesty, his heart and his character. He is a very good human being. I've been telling everyone I know to watch him, I've been sharing his interview videos and website on social media, and I've been contributing to his campaign. I hop everyone does the same. The US and the world need to get to know Mayor Pete. He has my vote!

About the only thing more impressive than Pete B and his ability answer clearly & connect? The sheer volume of positive comments ANY video of this guy generates, TH-cam or otherwise. I've watched dozens of his speeches & interviews, some going back a year or wo, and it's always the same - he inspires. Can count the negative ones on one hand LITERALLY. He's currently moved up to 3rd in the latest Iowa poll, I suspect that after his 1st debate stage appearance, he's gonna be a run-away freight train. Make that run-away bullet train, because he believes in those & wants them here!

This young man reminds me of JFK. I was fortunate to meet JFK, interview him and believe he was a fine American leader. He spoke of American values as being our strength and, had he lived longer, his ideology would have been positive and kept America secure. JFK laid a burden of patriotic responsibility on citizens, allowing us to feel we all belong. I miss that. Mayor Pete is obviously sincere and genuine, his integrity shines.
I''ll tell you why he appeals to a 70 year old...it's because he reflects the ideals we had in our youth, the ideals inspired by JFK. We see JFK in him.
With every interview I am more confident of President Pete.
Having watched and listened to many of Pete's speeches on videos/youtube .. I am convinced that he is the best Democratic candidate for the position as President of the U.S.A. His intelligence, his knowledge, his calm character make him stand head and shoulders above the other candidates. Unfortunately as a Canadian I cannot vote in American politics .. however if I was an American he would have my vote for sure 😁👍

I’ve been following Pete Buttigieg for four months, I’m completely convinced that he’s the best candidate in this race. Now I’m the monthly donor for his campaign and excited for his performance. I hope people will listen to him and decide for yourself whom to support.

Can't help imagining how this guy could start to rehabilitate perceptions of America around the world if he succeeded President Trump. It would surely be the most massive shift. As he says though, it would take quite a while to undo the damage.
This guy, Pete Buttigieg, understands that there are *many* aspects to leadership, and 'building community' is one that the current leaders sorely lacks both nationally and internationally, and the one thing I miss the most. He shows great understanding of human values, and what is the job of the president if not to make sure that his citizens are as happy as possible?
@POTUS: Try getting people to work together instead of against each other both internationally and nationally - spending money on developing better soap is much better than spending money developing better missiles in terms of the happiness each product brings, and if you could make minorities less of an issue by appealing them to do so instead of pushing them further away and causing more separation, maybe you had more hands to produce said soap as well instead of quite that much trouble.
I have seen nothing but positive comments about Pete, and he deserves every bit of it. This man is the clearest and most deliberate politician ive ever heard speak.
National qualifications may be shy, but his character and intelligence more than make up for it. In my opinion he supersedes any candidate that 2020 will bring to the table

I am a conservative and I am binge watching Major Pete's interviews on youtube.
I WAS STRUCK BY HIM TALKING ABOUT PREPARING FOR IOWA AND STUDYING INFORMATION PACKETS. HOW REFRESHING IT WOULD BE TO HAVE A PRESIDENT WHO ARRIVES PREPARED AND DOESN'T JUST "WING IT" AGAIN.

I find this interviewer to be sorta annoying. She takes forever to ramble off a long-winded question while mostly answering it at the same time. I can see in his eyes . . . "she's giving my answer . . . what does she want ME to say?"

He's gay. That is the beginning and ending of all we need to know. Personal feelings are just that...personal.
I visited South Bend last year and saw personally all the progress he made in the city. He is truly a special person. I find myself watching his interviews and speeches for hours and feeling inspired.
Mayor Pete Buttigieg is like a breath of very fresh air to our political life. He impresses me as being a very viable candidate for POTUS, but my heart still belongs to Bernie and, with that in mind, I would prefer Mayor Buttigieg as his running mate on the national ticket.
I do like bernie too. He did intruduce some important aspects and goals in 2016. However, he is not as concise on his views and as quick on his feet. Perhaps, he can and should suport a new generation of Democrat candidates. Many are great people and are important to listen too. Important is in the end that we consider them all and then really support who ever will be the D nominie! No fussing around! Who ever that is - 1 000 000x better as what the GOP has or ever will present!
@@BarbaraManor I'll always love Bernie for his being on the right side of history for the past half century, even when it wasn't politically expedient, and consider him easily one of the most important American political figures of the 21st century. I also think that if it became clear that the better course of action was to step aside and clear the way for the next generation, he would have the magnanimity of heart to do it.
I sincerely hope David Axelrod's interest in Mayor Pete indicates he's putting the band back together to elect America's first gay POTUS. Buttigieg+Axelrod+Plouffe+Favreau+Jarrett would be unstoppable. I"m guessing Stacy Abrams would be on board too. PB is the only candidate that understands how to deal with Trump, all the others will get sucked into the wood chipper.

44:13 Terrific advice from Pete regarding what to think about when joining a company (i.e. whether this company will shape the future so that it accords with the vision you have for yourself); AS WELL AS to recognise the fact that ANYTHING you do will contribute to the end product of who you are, and who you will become (i.e. no experience is along the way is wasted).

Slightly nit-picking here: The google translate example he provided is a little bit out of date. Google Translate now has gender-neutral translations. Translations for when it's going from a non-gendered language to a gendered one. ai.google/education/responsible-ai-practices?category=fairness

I love that he really understands foreign policy, we need a pres who will keep us secure, restore our ties with our allys and restore our global standing. The GOP doesn't understand how Trump has weakened us. We look vulnerable to our enemies. Countries who feared us and never would have had the nerve to move against us or our allies are now embolden. I love that he openly talks aboubt his faith, Living your faith should never be to the exclusion of others. I am Catholic, I am a midwesterner, I am Spanish I am a Dem and he speaks my language. He has my vote!

Check out his other interviews in which he describes that he believes the threshold for American troops entering foreign entanglements should only be because we believe if we don't, it would endanger the lives of American citizens. And that when that safety is guaranteed and we are assured future danger is no longer a threat, we get out.
