Does the Truth Still Matter: In Conversation with Chris Christie

  • No Republican politician illustrates the power and peril of Donald Trump and his takeover of the G.O.P. quite like New Jersey's two-term governor, Chris Christie. Christie, once the exemplar of Republican pugilism, went from competitor to wingman in Trump's successful rise to the presidency only to become his most outspoken antagonist. How does a man who has seen it all think the United States arrived at this juncture and what does he think the future holds?
Featuring former Governor of New Jersey Chris Christie in conversation with Leigh Ann Caldwell, American political reporter for The Washington Post.

I knew Beau Biden too. You’re right he was a great, great guy and could have been President not his Dad. Although we used to joke about how I wished his Dad was Prez and he said “me too”. I do not agree with you equating the Biden family as same as Trump. A great guy like Beau comes from great support and loving parents. Don Jr and the “will” is character and the Trump children’s lack of. They are reflections of their families. Hunter has owned his mistakes and is fighting and winning against the Republican onslaught. If his dad was on trial the him and the entire Biden family would be there in support. Where are the Trumps? Come on Chris, you know this is true and means something. What do you think the jury wonders why even his wife isn’t there? Those little things are noted by juries. As you know. So stop slamming Biden or saying they are grifters without evidence. Trump is on trial there’s your grifter.

There's a lot I like about Christie. I admire that he stood up to Trumpism. On the issue of Biden being too old versus Trump being a narcissistic psychopathic criminal, I can't understand how he feels that it's okay not to vote for Biden given his very low opinion of Trump. Christie says his vote for president won't matter since he lives in New Jersey (a blue state) but his opinion does matter since he has a following of sane Republicans. Anyone who has the least bit of logic and reason, in my opinion has a civic duty to make sure DT never gets near the WH again. Biden in spite of not being "salesman" enough to promote his policies etc., has the country's best interest at heart and is a decent human being. We'd all like to see a stronger orator etc. and Biden's language specific gaffes can grate, but since it is a binary choice, I don't think there is a choice. Biden, being too old could be compared to Christie being too fat, (his words) .....both have a greater effect on mortality, but that would never stop me from voting for someone who was too old, too fat, too unpolished etc. Maybe Christie believes this is just another election that will shake itself out if Trump somehow takes back the WH. Maybe he believes that democracy as we know it is not being challenged. Maybe he believes a Trump cabinet would be principled men and women who could govern with him and keep his worst impulses in check. I think on this point Christie is being cavalier and selfishly egotistical given the paramount importance of this election. Maybe he is ignorant of the possibility that he himself would be in the top ranks of the people DT has sworn to exact retribution. Regardless of what Christie says my opinion of him is that he is decent, open to constructive criticism and is not so immovable on his positions, as to be ridiculous.
I am a former Republican leaning independent turned Democrat for now. I think if the Republican party (not MAGA) has any future at all, this election needs to go Democrat.

the Truth for Gov Christie also matters. He has opposed Trump all this time, but in the most important act millions of us will take next November he's going to fail miserably by writing in a candidate instead of voting for President Biden/VP Harris. His words do not have any importance at this point.

Thank you for this interview with Mr. Chris Christie. While I can't agree with all he says, I can respect him. If I could have voted for him in this primary I would have. I feel he would have been the best choice for our nation from the Republican party. He seems to have a great love of America and care for our people. He impressed me when he visited the Middle East before he chose to run for president this race. He's a baby boomer too by the way, raised by people who fought for our country. May God bless.

@@debraderoos5225 if you are black or anybody other than being white or anyone who is working for a living you shouldn’t vote for any Republican rather if it’s Christie or anyone else. Choosing a candidate does not have anything to do with how well they speak or debate. It’s all about their voting record and nothing else. If they don’t have a voting record, like most state politicians do, then you would look at the party they are from and consider its voting record. Since Christie is a Republican that alone would show that he would not measure up to being sympathetic towards black issues or labor issues. I only vote for a candidate who is pro black and pro labor on the issues. At the moment that happens to be the Democrats and not the Republicans.
Saying that Christie would be a good president is something I couldn’t be sure about, simply because he’s a Republican. The only time the Republican Party have been pro black with its politics was about 150 years ago when it was a new party during the Lincoln and Grant administrations.

Thinking you could “make trump better”-that is like marrying someone thinking you can change them. I think Joe Biden is honorable and I agree that Biden speaks before he thinks. Yes, it is generational That is one thing I did not like about him. I wonder what it would be like if a third party of honor, intelligence, and charisma might still be able to win. Time is short.

  • @lisas946

A lot of what Christie says here rings true, and his personal feelings for Biden do too. Like when he tells the young man at the end he believes Biden would be "very hurt" to think he had offended. Biden has had to walk back thoughtless statements throughout his long career, but he has come back from those in very positive ways. His action is the key. Christie also said to look at Biden's record. If Biden has a problem with salesmanship it's getting fine-tuned right now, for sure.
I understand that Biden is old. But he has around him a great team that work to see his agenda move forward. And his agenda is working to improve the lives of so many people who need it. Trump's agenda is horrifying to reasonable people.
I think it's pretty clear Christie has no issue at all with Biden's character, but he gave clear warnings about Trump's.
    Where I disagree with Christie:
    1. There is no comparison with Hunter Biden using his family name to get a job he was actually qualified to do, and the continuous Trump family grift. Lara Trump is now DNC leader because of ... "God's will"???
    2. He won't vote for either candidate. There is no way we can allow Trump to win. Ergo, we gotta vote for Biden in order to ensure that. We can't just leave that result to chance.
