- Fatherland is a controversial coming-of-age documentary set in the remote South African bush. It follows a group of Afrikaner boys over 9 days at a military camp in the spirit of their fathers before them.
However, what starts out as basic training, fitness and camaraderie soon intensifies as the true nature of the camp is revealed and the boys are forced to question their place in the ‘New South Africa’.
These camps are designed to recreate a sense of Nationalism amongst the next generation of Afrikaaners, though as their training progresses darker ideological elements emerge revealing the stark realities of their training and indoctrination.
The film follows three particular boys and Col. Franz Jooste -an ex-SADF soldier that fought for his country pre 1994 - and focuses on the conflicting views developed by the boys. Under the strict leadership of their camp leader, they struggle to find their identity within their own communities and within their ‘rainbow’ nation at large. The children are forced to participate in a physically and mentally grueling process that tests their values, believes and identities on every level.

The hoofseun is someone I could imagine being friends with when I was at school. He seems like a great kid.
I am a military instructor with 30 years of experience in the SA Army, and currently hold the rank of Staff Sergeant. I am of the opinion that children in today's society need to learn the type of discipline, fitness, and teamwork as well as a sense of responsibility and attention to detail that young men used to learn from national service. I also believe everyone should learn self-defense (which is one of the subjects that I teach). However, from the evidence in this video, I am not convinced that this "training" teaches any of that. How do you teach children discipline when your own clothes are dirty and un-ironed, your boots are dirty, your hair stick out under your beret and you haven't shaved for at least a week?
The correct command is " regs met driee afmarsjeer, regs om" not "rig op die regter vlank, regs om". You don't dress (rig) when you do movements on the halt. You dress when you are marching. A flank (for the purpose of drill) consists of the advance rank or retire rank when you are faced in the direction you are going to march off to.
An instructor should at the very least be able to do the minimum requirement that is expected from the student, preferably more.
The student does not always need to know the reason for specific training straight away, but the instructor does.
A lot of this "training" seems to have no purpose, and in my opinion is a waste of time.
You are putting these children under a false impression to think that they have done "military training" like their fathers and grandfathers have done, because it doesn't even come close to the first day of actual military training.

These documentaries are great - really interesting.
It's hard to not see the necessity of groups like this in South Afrika when the rape and murder of Afrikaners is ignored by the ANC and encouraged by the EFF.

As a human born in South Africa, I can honestly say that it's heartbreaking how our parents let history repeat itself like this. It's nice how some kids seem to be changing though.

Blacks had these camps too during apartheid. Now some the Afrikaners think that they are now facing apartheid. In a sense of word it's true, because blacks are now in the preferential position. But it's not yet as bad as apartheid was.

I support the self defense part of the doc. Farm murders is an issue in our country and farmers should train themselves on self defense n all. But the hate and disrespect to the black nation. i wanted to point out a quick correction to the translation in this film of the word "Boer". Boer means farmer in Afrikaans. It does not mean any and every Afrikaner. So when they say 2,000 Boers have been murdered, it is not that 2,000 white people have been murdered, it is 2,000 FARMERS who have been killed. Think about that number and what it means for a nation as a whole. Who supplies food to everyone in a nation? The farmers. Killing farmers isn't getting the nation anywhere. Please recognize this major distinction.

In my honest opinion this documentary just drives home how much Afrikaans culture as a people is founded on the suppression of black people basically these young men are sent to go prepare for a war that doesn't exist and a war that may never happen- black people when young men get of age and go for their training it has to do with our culture and ceremonial processes it never concentrates on white people

I have just started watching this film & already at 1:27 the Afrikaans word "wesens" which means "beings" has been subtitled as "animals" which is an entirely different meaning. I am now not trusting the intent or integrity of this film & that is is not going to try to be sensationalist. I used to be a Real Stories fan. Now I am not so sure what about your content I can trust.
