  • All the interview bits of film director Monte Hellman (1929-2021) taken from the documentary "Warren Oates: Across the Border" (1993) which was produced by Tom Thurman. Oates was the favorite actor of Hellman and they made four films: The Shooting (1966), Two-Lane Blacktop (1971), Cockfighter (1974) and China 9, Liberty 37 (1978).

I have always loved warren Oates, think of the wild bunch, badlands, and two lane blacktop, to name but a few. He was simply superb.

I really need to preserve the memories from when I was just 10 years old. At that time, Warren was filming in Boston (Brink's Job), and I, a neighborhood kid, became acquainted with Warren and his wife Joan, who generously welcomed me into their home. I actually ran right over there and said hello, and they seemed happy to have a kid around, theirs were back home, and Joan was visiting. We shared incredible moments together, including a trip to Boston for lunch (he drew how to make a rubber band gun on a napkin, Man, wish I had that). They even invited me to the film set, creating unforgettable experiences. I hold cherished stories from those days. Warren continued to send me birthday and Christmas cards for the next couple years until his passing. And yes, he was the nicest guy.
My first date ,I went to see Airwolf and didn't know he had a role in it. I jumped up in my seat when he appeared on screen, he had already passed away. "That's Warren!" Name dropping on my first date, hasn't stopped.

Thank you so much for sharing your personal memories about Warren Oates. I heard more stories about how nice and funny he was. Please join us on Facebook where you can find lots of fans and friends of Warren on the Warren Oates Fanpage, the Sam Peckinpah Fanpage and The Wild Bunch Fanpage. His son Timothy Oates is also a member of these groups. Hope to see you there!

I think I chatted with Tim there once. I was in Warren's kitchen when Joan gave him a framed photograph that Sam had sent to him in massachusetts. It was a shot of him and William Holden. It was black and white, they had cowboy hats on and were looking scruffy. I remember my kid reaction to the photo wondering, slightly, why they looked like that and why it would make a memorable enough photo to send. Years later I saw the Wild Bunch and it all fell together in a super surreal and satisfying way. It was a shot from on set, and a jovial moment between the two actors that SamP wanted to send to his friend. Putting that together to reframe a childhood memory was incredible. I am grateful I have a very good visual recall. The big story I need to tell is when I visited him after he got out of hospital after an on-set injury involving the extras (who hurt him!) it is a pretty good one. He bore the brunt of an old Boston grudge.
