This car is amazing I ve got the blue coupe for 2 months et don’t regret my purchase the only annoying fact is the gearbox which is a bit slow and the old central console...
I love both cars. Jaguar sounds manlier and “roar-like”. But Ferrari sounds more classic and high performance. Apples and oranges but both badass in different styles.
i didnt know that the jaguar actually sounds like that. i thought it was going to be quiet. if that is seriously how it sounds i have to get one i mean it. amazing!
1) Wider tyres have more road contact therefore more vibration is produced inside the tyre; this vibration "shakes" the tyre to produce sound waves, just like a hi-fi speaker. 2) Wider tyres move more air around the tyres and wheel area creating turbulence. This turbulence creates pressure differences which we hear as sound waves or pressure waves to be precise. Hope that helps :)
Jag did a great job with this car and the exhaust sound is just right. In neutral it will only rev to ~4,000 RPM. If it would have rev'd higher like the Ferrari did, it would have hit the db meter even harder. Awesome cars, both sound amazing.
the xkrs is a really fun car to drive. we have one in the family and it's a blast to ride and drive. it gets out of the hole good to almost instant torque right away
Yamaha helped tune the exhaust to direct different frequencies of sound throughout the cabin (high frequencies travel over head, low rumbly frequencies underneath) as well as give the car its high pitch.
Actually is not, I had the same inquiry and I used both, the application I downloaded for my phone and a professional sound measuring device to measure the noise coming out from my motorbike's exhaust, the results were pretty close. What makes the difference little bit more significant though is when you put the filter on the sound measuring device.
Nigel Bowers you commented so it does. lol. so affording a pair of seats equal to even applying for credit for a car with a down payment of a house? a 1999 xk8 as nice as it is doesn't count in this case. also unless you have at least two supercars the manufacturers dont care about you. did you get a questionnaire sent out to you?
That is a pretty incredible sound, but I have to say that I still prefer the CGT. It has this uniqueness to it that I've never heard in another car -- especially in person. If you get the chance, go to Pebble and watch / listen to all the cars as they roll out for the Concours. Everything is there, Zonda, K'segg, Ferrari, Bugatti, LFA's, CGT's, everything. Most of them do a full / near-full throttle launch. It's awesome., and will give you goosebumps.
Good call. Tough to argue with that. The LFA has a great sound too, as others have pointed out, but I think the "throaty-ness" of the CGT sounds more mechanical, whereas the LFA sounds more F1 and "technical" -- if that make sense. I prefer raw / old school (like true manual transmissions, versus "flappy paddle" gearboxes). Having driven a reasonable number of both variants, there is no question you feel much more connected to a car with a real manual gearbox and clutch. Hands down.
altough your correct with double soundpower every 3 db, your ear doesn't perceives all of this power, so the really recognized sound might actually double just every 10db
The company I work for makes precision mics and decibel meters. It's hard for decibel meters to be accurate all the time due to the type of mic used, and how sound behaves. To get any idea what's going on you have to put up arrays of microphones of different types and gather the data on several laptops. It's expensive and time consuming, and it's not something you can carry in your pocket!
You guys must have forgotten the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S, since its exhaust note is so different from what you would expect it to be, just by looking at the car..
I think my vote was decided in 41 seconds. Obviously I watched the whole video anyway. The downshifts of the 458 is so amazing. Jaguar also sounds so damn good. But it has to be the 458 for me personally. The downshifts in those first 40 seconds being a big influencer in that decision.
The Ferrari, like all recent Ferrari's, sound like an orchestra. Fantastic, crisp, sharp and well played. The Jag is more like a brown bear, on fire, sitting on a bass drum getting thrown down a fire escape from 16th floor. One 'slightly' more sophisticated then the other, but both, hugely addicting.
My neighbor owns an xks and I saw him pull out as I was walking home from school as he was flooring it it growled like no other! The only other car which sound I could compare it to was a gt500 with an aftermarket exhaust. Jag on sound a build quality anyday
Let me challenge you on that - Pagani Zonda 760rs. Evo did a feature of it earlier this year. That engine with its backfire is just... I agree that the Carrera GT sounds awesome, but the 760 is in a class of its own.
What are you talking about? He didn't, at any point suggest the Jag was going to be better? They were just playing with 2 different loud exhausts to see which was loudest. If you've ever heard the noise the XKR-S makes you'd understand why. It's a GT car unlike the Ferrari so doesn't drive as well but the noise is fucking incredible. Totally different to the scream of the 458. Really angry noise. I like it as much as the 458 noise. Try to get to hear in the flesh. You won't be disappointed.
If I have to make choose 10 best noise: V12: DBS, Aventador V10: LFA, Gallardo Performante V8: 458, SLS, 12C Spider, XKR-S Straight-6: M135i, Eagle E-Type Speedster
i am sorry but i have to say this: iPhone App for measuring the level of sound in dB is not accurate at levels that you judge cars when their results are so close to each other. but nice video :) i prefer Jag, has more aggressive sound then 458
+John L needs a spires stage 2... with the X- Pipe crossover it gets 10x BETTER... absolutely as loud as the F type R but cleaner sound with less snaps
Jag..Submit your vote here
Lee White jag for sure
Lee White Jag
This car is amazing I ve got the blue coupe for 2 months et don’t regret my purchase the only annoying fact is the gearbox which is a bit slow and the old central console...
I think the XKR-S sounds much better... remember, it roars!
Joshua Pozerskis agree
I concur
Lovely growl from that Supercharged V8.
(Flat plane crank) Vs (Cross plane crank)
==
(Racing car sound) Vs (Muscle car sound)
+Sam Masson Enough said!
Shitty racing actual car sound...
Correct, most ppl. Don’ t understand the difference. I personally prefer the ‘roar’ over the ‘scream’!
You just summed it up quite well!
You meant: "Which sounds the loudest?" I still like the Jag's sound more! :3
7 years later and i can afford this car
The Jag by a long shot.
The sound of the 458 in that tunnel - I'm hearing it with my 5.1 surround headset WOW!!!! My heart rate just increased!
crackles and backfires of JAG on downshifts - just beautiful, reminds od TVRs
I love Jaguar, and I love the fact that Jaguar is making a comeback. Their Cars look amazing.
Jag sounds better and off course how much difference lol
I love my XFR, but that 458 takes it for me. Unbelievable sound.
making a video about how loud these beasts are is just as awesome as seeing how fast they go around a track! :D Thanks!
Maserati granturismo has the best exhaust note in my opinion
Yeah but it's hella slow.Damn near anything can beat it
Aston 6l v12s are the best
I love both cars. Jaguar sounds manlier and “roar-like”. But Ferrari sounds more classic and high performance. Apples and oranges but both badass in different styles.
sweet ferrari, love the gold rims and the soft touch interior as well as the fire extinguisher and lack of a gps.
Bad ass sound profiles. Way more of those please!
i didnt know that the jaguar actually sounds like that. i thought it was going to be quiet. if that is seriously how it sounds i have to get one i mean it. amazing!
You had a Jaguar didn't you, ohhh wait I forgot... All you do is spread lies you fucking moron.
no your wrong, i have a jaguar just not that one. they make more than 1 model fucktard
***** both are nice cars though tbh
1) Wider tyres have more road contact therefore more vibration is produced inside the tyre; this vibration "shakes" the tyre to produce sound waves, just like a hi-fi speaker.
2) Wider tyres move more air around the tyres and wheel area creating turbulence. This turbulence creates pressure differences which we hear as sound waves or pressure waves to be precise. Hope that helps :)
That was fun, my old Maserati had 115 db but that was with a full Larini with sports cats, loved that sound.
Man...dat 458's sound...makes me shivers...what a monster.
Ferrari's engine is not a simple sound... It is melody ... it is Art...
Jag did a great job with this car and the exhaust sound is just right. In neutral it will only rev to ~4,000 RPM. If it would have rev'd higher like the Ferrari did, it would have hit the db meter even harder. Awesome cars, both sound amazing.
Great video Mr Sutcliffe
both sound very nice in very different ways
the xkrs is a really fun car to drive. we have one in the family and it's a blast to ride and drive. it gets out of the hole good to almost instant torque right away
Was following a Jag XKR-S today.. The driver booted it to overtake 3 cars in one go and it sounded awesome!!!!
love those scuderia-esque bronze wheels
Well, invite the Maserati Granturismo S / Sport / Stradale to such a contest the next time.😆
Nothing sounds better than a Nissan Sentra with a CVT going uphill. A Ferrari can only dream of droning so hardcore.
:)))) ...... :)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
2:16 Oh look! It seems that a fire extinguisher is standard now :DD
Good job Steve... enjoyed this
More of this vids please, Mr.Steve
Yamaha helped tune the exhaust to direct different frequencies of sound throughout the cabin (high frequencies travel over head, low rumbly frequencies underneath) as well as give the car its high pitch.
Its a kind of ratio (logarithmic) between the sound you measure and the hearing treshold,in this case. You can use decibels for anything else
The Fez sounds like an expensive hairdryer in comparison to the mighty Jag, end of contest
I like the Jags Dirty Dirty sound!
Actually is not, I had the same inquiry and I used both, the application I downloaded for my phone and a professional sound measuring device to measure the noise coming out from my motorbike's exhaust, the results were pretty close. What makes the difference little bit more significant though is when you put the filter on the sound measuring device.
I really enjoyed this video. Thanks.
Ferrari does, has, and always will set the standard for a beautiful exhaust note....
Haha people that cant afford the seats from these beauties are arguing in the comments like their opinion matters.
Well, being a Jag owner myself, I CAN afford the seats thus my opinion matters. Does yours?
Nigel Bowers you commented so it does. lol. so affording a pair of seats equal to even applying for credit for a car with a down payment of a house? a 1999 xk8 as nice as it is doesn't count in this case.

*the Jag XKR all day ..more practical and sexier plus more elegant*
Agreed!
The tunnel in the jag was different right? Not the best comparison. I don't think they are too different in the end.
altough your correct with double soundpower every 3 db, your ear doesn't perceives all of this power, so the really recognized sound might actually double just every 10db
The sounds are different and I like them both.
Was the 458 in race mode for the test? It *completely* changes the engine sound!
He didn't turn the 458 to Race mode, that is much much louder.
The Jaguar DESTROYED my ears...
I want both of these cars in my life!
Its not about loudness its about hormony and satisfaction.
They should've mentioned that the Ferrari is equipped with the optional official "Sports Exhaust", hence the black exhaust pipes.
The company I work for makes precision mics and decibel meters. It's hard for decibel meters to be accurate all the time due to the type of mic used, and how sound behaves. To get any idea what's going on you have to put up arrays of microphones of different types and gather the data on several laptops. It's expensive and time consuming, and it's not something you can carry in your pocket!
it's about the experience from behind the wheel, doesn't matter where the engine is
You didn't give the tunnel decibels for the Jag yet you say the Ferrari is much louder. Seems like a fair review.
If you placed the microphone further away it would have picked up the exhaust noise much better.
the jaguar just sounds 1000000 times cooler
the sound of jaguar XKR-S it's noise while the sound of ferrari 458 spider it's a sublime melody
can't agree more... EPIC SOUND
You guys must have forgotten the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S, since its exhaust note is so different from what you would expect it to be, just by looking at the car..
458 for me hands down.
Today we've got the 488... Damn I miss the 4.5 NA V8. But I'm glad Jaguar kept their 5.0 Supercharged V8.

I Love that Jag XKR-S!
there should have been an aston martin in that test ! lool .. nice vid keep up da good work guys
My neighbor owns an xks and I saw him pull out as I was walking home from school as he was flooring it it growled like no other! The only other car which sound I could compare it to was a gt500 with an aftermarket exhaust. Jag on sound a build quality anyday
Was that heading up over the Shoreham fly-over in the last sequence...!? In which case, where was the tunnel you did the sound check in please?
That car sounds amazing!
I JUST prefer straight 6s to V8s but as I own both, it's not a problem for when I change my mind!
The dB scale is like this. Every 3dB represents twice the sound power ( 10*log(2) ).
Let me challenge you on that - Pagani Zonda 760rs. Evo did a feature of it earlier this year. That engine with its backfire is just... I agree that the Carrera GT sounds awesome, but the 760 is in a class of its own.
The jaguar surprised me, but the ferrari sounds really better
in a german study, it can cause hearing damage if you drive with windows down with open top
Naturally Aspirated engine is the best, no doubt.
F458 Speciale FTW.
Am I right in thinking that this 458 Spider is the same one Chris Harris reviewed but couldn't say where he got it due to his Ferrari ban?
Owned both! Nothing beats the F1 sound of 458, the Jaguar has a throttly raspy note but it is not an exotic sound like the ferrari for sure
What are you talking about? He didn't, at any point suggest the Jag was going to be better? They were just playing with 2 different loud exhausts to see which was loudest.
If you've ever heard the noise the XKR-S makes you'd understand why. It's a GT car unlike the Ferrari so doesn't drive as well but the noise is fucking incredible. nice test!
Saw a 458 Spider today and it has the best sound I have ever heard, 458 wins hand down.
I think thats filmed at Longcross?
I'd use the jaguar for a everyday use but the ferrari for special occasions. Beautiful cars, beautiful sounds.
If I have to make choose 10 best noise:
V12: DBS, Aventador
V10: LFA, Gallardo Performante
V8: 458, SLS, 12C Spider, XKR-S
Straight-6: M135i, Eagle E-Type Speedster
Jag has that classic growl of a jag and the crackle pops
Is this filmed in the Southwick tunnel near Shoreham?
Excuse me for my ignorance, but what does the front tyres have to do with the noise an engine makes?
The phone might not have registered the Jag as loud in the tunnel, but with it's growlier noise - OW! :) .
Mine:
1. XKR-S (or F-Type V8S)
2. Ferrari FF (or F12)
3. BMW M6 F12
4. MP4-12C Spider
5. B7 RS4
No air filter at the rear for the Jag? Then the engine noise is for perdestrian more than driver.
The 458 wasn´t even in race mode just then the exhaust will go like hell *-*
What are you doing on the Shoreham flyover?
That'd be a monster!
Wonder how F80 M3 with performance exhaust stand between these two?
agreed! LFA and FXX produce some orgasmic sounds but carrera gt is just incredible!!
Jag sounds better IMO. Growls!!!
It was your comment: twice the price so should be twice as loud?
next v10 engines pls!!!
-Porsche Carrera GT
-Lexus LFA
-Lamborghini Gallardo
-Audi R8
-Srt Viper
i am sorry but i have to say this: iPhone App for measuring the level of sound in dB is not accurate at levels that you judge cars when their results are so close to each other. but nice video :) i prefer Jag, has more aggressive sound then 458
AUTOCAR please can you do this test with Maserati Grandturismo S and Alfa Romeo 8C???pleaseeee....are 2 of the best V8 soundds for me
Ummm who cares how LOUD they are. The Jaguar sounds absolutely amazing. The Ferrari sounds the same as all Ferrari's, Yaaawwwwn, boring...
Ferrari sounds miles better than the XK in real life.
+John L I have an F TYPE R and it sounds awesome....but I would never say that it sounds better than some Ferraris.....
+John L needs a spires stage 2... with the X- Pipe crossover it gets 10x BETTER... absolutely as loud as the F type R but cleaner sound with less snaps
We need more videos like this. However, next time use a real decibel meter.
