OMG! I use Sketchup 3 years and now I didn't know a lot of this. I use various plugins to do chamfers, bevels and fillets. I think I will start to do them with this method. Thanks a lot for sharing!
To think I always used to select a surface and then drag it along the endless string of line only to hope the final mesh is clean and solid without any gaps offace holes or any other nasty shenanigans when you can just select the entire edge path and just click once for sketchup to do it perfectly fine for you... And i considered myself a pro at sketchup xd. You're a lifesaver, Justin
Oh my this is my first time on your channel and in this video you are announcing 50 000 subscribers... you have 10x that now, I will not be the 50 000th subscriber but somewheree 10 x that, congratulations. I'm looking forward to watching more vids
So much wasted time when, instead, I should have come directly here to Essentials. Simple concise 'exactly what was needed' instructions. Worked first time. Thanks very muchly!
This tip was perfect for me! I use SketchUp to show home renovations and mitering objects like trim & base and cab doors by hand used to take SO long. Thank you!
Whaaaaaat? I love the follow me tool. I use it when making baseboards and ceiling profiles. But I never knew that I didn't have to spend a ton of time spinning around a room's floor to select all the lines... that I can simply click on the face! Cool beans! Thanks, Justin!! 🙌🏽
Hi there! Very new to SketchUp and incredibly pleased to have found your channel. The wine glass just blew my mind. Excited to learn more; keep up the great work! :)
Thanx so so much. I love your tutorials and usually everything works out nicely! But with the ball I have a problem. I am still using Sketchup free (2017) and I followed step by step, but after clicking (I tried once and double) within the groups, nothing happens. I once managed getting the belt with exploding group before. Why is that?
Why isnt there a video showing how to take a bed post photo, import it in sketch up and then make a 3 d image of it that could be imported into Cabinet Vision?
@@workshopsdavidtsmith Yeah! And also why isn't there a video of how to 3D scan an individual hair strand, import into Sketchup, and duplicate it at various lengths so we can all import the result into our Hollywood Hair Salon Makeover Deluxe 3.0 software?
Just starting to learn SketchUp Thanks for posting Truly Amazing. I have used AutoCAD and Draftsight in the past 2D Free Draft sight will no longer be available after the end of 2019, I didn't want to learn new software but I think they may have done me a big favor forcing me to look at SketchUp Make.
Love the Tutorials. I've always liked Sketchup because of it's ease of use and versatility especially if you add PLUGINS, but I'm deeply disappointed they removed the Terrain from Geolocation Import. That's a real kick in the bunny bits.
What about rounding corners on a box, but the bottom is 1/2" offset inside so the corners angle down, but towards the interior. I hate using words to describe images lol
I have two overlapping rectangles that are components. I have watched every tutorial i can find and I cannot get a clear answer on how to remove the overlapping material from one of the rectangles. I am using SketchUp Make 2017.
@10:44 - I’ve tried multiple times to create a curved solid (a rounded fireplace) using the follow me tool to extrude a simple recurve shape around a 90 degree arc. The result should look like 1/4 of an 14’ foot tall, inverted vase or jug. Each time, the extrude is funky, with a notch in the corner at the center of the arc because the extrude jumps outside the selected path at the top. The extrude looks fine at the bottom 6” but the whole solid is slightly wider at the top than on the bottom. The curved profile is clean and correct but the vertical edges of the resulting solid lean outward, outside the vertical plane at the radii of the 1/4 circle. It’s kinda bizarre. I’ve started over with new geometry, made sure the profile I’m extruding is 100% vertical and still, the same, weird result. Thoughts?
Hey, Justin. I had the follow me tool working just fine yesterday, but now when I select a path and then select the follow me tool, it un-selects the path. I've tried selecting the path first. Tried selecting the profile I want to follow the path. but, what ever I select gets un-selected when I try to activate the follow me tool. Help me understand what I'm doing wrong, please. As always thank you for your awesome videos.
Hi Justin. Thank you for your tutorials, they are very helpfull. I'm doing alot of interior renders in Sketchup now. I'm wondering if you know how to import 3Ds max file with all textures to Sketchup. I have huge library with interior furnitures but they were made in 3Ds max. I can import one by one and apply all textures but it takes time.
So I create a group like a handrail that has a unique top rail and then intermediate rails at 4" OC (7 groups nested in a larger group). I create the line that I want to follow. Sketchup pro 2019 doesn't seem to allow me to select the railing group and then to follow the line. I can get rid of all the groups and individually use the tool for each one. But when I download or create a more complicated shape that doesn't work. It seems that tis tool should be able to be used with a group. WHat am I missing?
Extrude along a line or spline just seem impossible with SketchUp. The Follow Me and Keep doesn't really provide great results at all even if it manages to keep model upright. Is that the only "follow me" plugin there is? Pipe Along Path doesn't really work since it can only do a perfect round along a line.
I'm having problems with follow me drawing half-moon circle up a spiral/coil shape. The spiral causes the follow me to twist/spin on itself as the half-moon makes its way up the coil.. It is really infuriating. Any solutions?
Five years and I didn't know the path doesn't have to be attached to the face or line to be extruded. It's a Yogi Berra moment. On the other hand, more "complex casework" we don't need, but it's good for laying out geothermal lines. The "reverse" FollowMe is similar to how Sketchup extrapolates a topographical sheet from a Google Earth *.png . That was another Yogi event.
Hi, great video. Buuuuut, I have a question, you used only 24 segments. I tried to make a Sheave with a radius of 15 and 106 segments. For the life of me, I cannot get that Follow Me function to work on that. How would you make a Sheave/Pulley that's as round (max segments) as possible???
@@Thesketchupessentials Thanks for your reply. When I use the original amount of segments, it works. Once I increase the amount, it starts messing up my Sheave. Here's a quick video to show the difference between 24 segments and 106 segments (With 24 segments it looks like I need it) th-cam.com/video/-g43TSdtGoM/w-d-xo.html
Try scaling your object up about 5x, running follow me, then scaling it back down again. If your object is fairly small, SketchUp may be having trouble creating all the tiny little edges associated with a smoother curve...
I am pretty new to Sketchup's Follow Me tool, and almost every time I try to do a circular extrusion, I get the following message: "Warning the path you have selected does not start or end on the extrusion cross section. Unexpected results may occur." And it is correct, because the results are not what I want. If I try drawing a chain link using two parallel lines with a arc closing both ends, I get the warning and then a chain link with pieces missing in both end curves. I know it probably is a simple error on my part, but I just can't find it.
@@Thesketchupessentials you appear to have premade scenes. I would like the students to complete this tutorial but wanted a quicker way than having to recreate all the scenes.
I need help with getting the falcon off this image into sketchup to be able to push or pull the image into a object. Do you think you could whip up a video explaining how to do this Please? Here is the link to the image www.leechburglights.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/learning-the-basic-computer-setu.jpg
Do you have a video of you manipulating a straight line? I tried drawing lines around the head of the falcon where the drawing comes to points. After drawing those lines Sketchup looks at it like it was a rectangle drawn around the head. It won't let me push a side of the box drawn around the head, instead it tries to push or pull the rectangle up or down. I was trying to use the example in your video "10 Ways to Create Curved, Rounded, and Organic Shapes in Sketchup" but I still can't figure it out. I know you have tons of videos dealing with Sketchup and are really good at explaining things but the above answer "push / pull line tool is not helping me :) So if you do have time to make a quick demo on importing a picture, tracing lines around it and bending those lines into shape of the picture I, and am sure others, would really appreciate it.
