I had no idea something like this existed! I was looking at 3d printings for Parkinsons med dispensers on etsy and saw the seller also printed "turkish drop spindles". I was curious and found this vid! I crochet and now I'm super interested in making my own yarn out of non-pre-woven materials! This looks so fun XD

      Me too !
I have crocheted and knitted for 35 years, and use any hand spun yarns...but just didn't look further.
Now I have spent 3 days solid, on YT, absorbing as much as possible about all the different spindles... dealgan to Turkish.
      Also the actual spinning wheels...
So pricy, but I think the portable/fold up versions (take anywhere you go...) versions have me hooked.
The kromski and Ashford have versions... literally fit into a bag they make too!
Those long weekends with family, not just bring along the knitting, now it can be spindles too.
My neice started crochet because she saw me do it.
Then she started knitting and when they took her needles away at school, she used her pencils!
(I since discovered they do make needles with facets, so she was not too wrong there).
I think kids would love drop spindles.
My nephew struggled with crochet but he would of taken to a spindle.
I remember the craze of those spinning tops and other string toys. Bats and balls and the rest.
We had fun back in the 1980s with them.
I just never saw a drop spindle until this week.

goes into detail about the things that I would NOT need instructions on (how to assemble) but completely skip how to create a leader, attach roving and cast spinning. Maybe this is more intermediate than my knowledge but seemed very beginners since how to assemble an obvious Turkish spindle.

Can you make a vide of how to get raw roving on to a Turkish spindle? Instead of already having some spun? I'm so confused.

Hi there! One quest…after you spin your yarn clockwise, do to put it on the spindle clockwise as well?

Question, on each subsequent length of spinning do you spiral up the shaft? I would love to see a spin And ply demo. Someone was doing that at a festival. She spun a length and then after she had a bit on it, reversed the spin and plied it. In essence having a 3 ply yarn on the arms almost constantly.

You should call it by it's best known name which is Turkish, so no one becomes confused...
thank you for showing how to use it!

I made a Turkish spindle out of four popsicle sticks and a chopstick. Unfortunately, the pointy end of the stick doesn't go through very far. Is that okay?

do you need to 'set the twist' with this kind of spindle like the others? and if so, do you then need to unwind in onto a niddy noddy or is there another way to do it?

    • @TheWoolery
      @TheWoolery  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It really depends on if you plan to ply the yarn or not. In addition it would depend on what craft you plan to use the yarn for (weaving or knitting)

@@TheWoolery Thanks for the info! I am guessing if you are plying you don't need to, but once you reach your preferred ply you still do?
What difference does the weaving vs knitting make to it?
