I found a dog tag of a Mr Kenneth McKnight who was thankfully still with us in 2004 in a field in chadelsworth England while metal detecting who was from orange county Massachusetts he was in this regiment i was so happy to return his dog tag to him after all the years and his family were extremely grateful and sent me information that i was able to piece together why this dog tag was found in the field so far away from his home in America sadly he passed away a few years later Mr Mac Knight i always think about you and what you went through in the war and i was so happy and proud that i was able to return such a piece of your personally possession to you and learn about what you went through from your family rest in piece you will always be remembered by me

Looks accurate, great to see a movie about WW2 as there have not been many new ones recently. I have always respected the airborne troops because of the extra guts they would need jumping out of a plane with flak coming at them, their lack of heavy weapon support and the threat of landing in the wrong drop zones just as the US did in Normandy, drowning in the fields flooded by the Germans and the British did at Arnhem. St. Mere Eglise, Pegasus Bridge and Bastogne are great examples of airborne engagements and are of great interest to me in WW2. "Band of Brothers" my favourite ever tv programme and good to see that film makers are still interested in the subject instead of endless sequels and super hero movies. About time Spielberg remade "Battle of the Bulge "after the great job he did with SPR.

Generally, nicely done. At the beginning the troopers crossing the field are identified as "82nd Airborne" but are wearing 101st Airborne shoulder patches. We have an American carrying an MP40 and another carrying a No. 4 MKI Enfield. Certainly possible...not likely at all. American paratroopers so armed would not have had a source of supply of 9mm or .303 British ammunition.

Yes, the actors in the clip were a bit older than the soldiers who fought in World War II, particularly airborne troops. Not sure why they attacked the German outpost the way they did, coming at it through an open field. Also, their platoon (?) leader was a major. Usually, it would be a young second or even first lieutenant, but it's certainly possible that a major would be in charge, particularly if he was a replacement for fallen officers. Still, a good effort to be authentic.

One of the American is carrying the “Grease Gun”. Judging by the size of the ejection port and cover this is the M3A1 version. As far as historical accuracy, I do not believe the A1 version of the M3 was available during the timeframe being portrayed here. The M3A1 did not have a separate charging handle. It had an extended ejection port and a finger slot in the bolt for the soldier to be able to insert a finger and pull the bolt to the firing position.

Nobody carried, even a Thompson, at the eye-level position in those days, especially in an open field. That is a new tactic, rather stupid as far as my view. But, as a gun/military nut, I enjoyed the video as much as for the old equipment as anything. To further explain my disdain for the ready position, I've used my Mi carbine enough that I can fire effective from the hip while having both eyes unobstructed checking out the distance. You don't WANT a part of your weapon blocking ANY view. In other words, decent training in firing your weapon for all positions. ...And if your weapon is a Thompson, you are gonna hose any possible target anyway!

Yeah that is a nee technique primarily used by SWAT teams and police units. I am with you. It think it is a pretty stupid way to carry because it blocks a lot of your view. May be ok in close quarters but certainly not in the open field. One of the Americans was also carrying an M3A1. A “Grease Gun” with the “finger hole” bolt and extended dust cover. These were not yet developed and fielded in time for D Day.

I was a Territorial Army infantryman in England, 1977, when we used the SLR 7.62 mm, and was battalion rifle champion aged 19. ...... I grew up on a country estate using shotguns, both on rough and driven shooting, so I was used to holding the weapon low, swinging it swiftly into the shoulder, and firing from a well-balanced stance. ...... To hold any weapon to the shoulder for any length of time, particularly while moving, causes strain, and the butt will tend to drop, meaning that any shot made will tend to be awkward.
Our platoon commander was an urban penpusher by trade, and useless at commanding infantry. ...... I come from a service family of army and naval officers, and had been his radio operator, so I saw at first hand his limitations. ...... On an advance to contact, I was looking at the ground, deciding what orders I would give if an enemy opened up at us from any point. ...... When we were fired on, the officer was utterly clueless, and radioing the company commander for instructions. ...... I take the view that it is better to make a fast decision, and be wrong, and learn something, than make no decision, and learn nothing. ...... In war, seconds count, and dithering can be fatal. ...... I was unimpressed.
Another time, we were on a firing range with pop-up man-size electric targets. ...... One had to walk through thick bushes, targets would pop-up, and I was hitting them fine using my normal technique. ...... The officer arrived, shouted at me for NOT having the butt always in my shoulder, and my hits dropped. ....... A few more similar incidents, including the rigidly wooden thinking of the dead man's shoes hierarchy, and we parted company.
To me it is CommonZense to have part-time soldiers of the highest quality, able to think for themselves, with most able to step up one or two ranks on mobilisation. ...... However, egalitarian political considerations meant that even in a small unit of 40 men in a city of 250,000, some very low quality soldiers were recruited. ...... The type of soldier who has a jam in his SLR on the range, and turns towards the sergeant, saying 'My gun's jammed!' with the muzzle pointed directly towards the sergeant's stomach.

Tommy gun used here was a pre war commercial model. By 1944 they were using cheaper & simpler military model. Easy to tell because the bolt was on the side on the military model, not the top.

Well-fed middle aged reenactor chaps with British accents portraying US airborne. Umm, okay. But still worth watching for the gear.
