"Going Home Like a Shooting Star: Thea Bowman’s Journey to Sainthood," presents the riveting life of Sister Thea Bowman, an African American Catholic Franciscan Sister who used her powerful gifts to educate and challenge the church and society to grow in racial inclusivity. Her skills of preaching, music, and teaching moved many Catholics to begin to confront their own racism while she urged her African American brothers and sisters to claim their gifts and share their “fully functioning” personhood. Thea worked tirelessly to proclaim this message until her untimely death from breast cancer in 1990.
The film makes a strong connection between Thea’s Gospel call for justice, love and unity and the current effort of Black Lives Matter activists and efforts to combat systemic racism. Many in the film cite Thea’s voice as an influence on their ongoing efforts to achieve social and racial justice.
Production of "Going Home Like a Shooting Star: Thea Bowman’s Journey to Sainthood" was made possible with funding from the Catholic Communications Campaign of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as well as support from various foundations and congregations of U.S. men and women religious.

This was a remarkable tribute not only to one woman, but to all black women, women everywhere that they are needed, capable, and called to proclaim the love of Jesus to the world and especially to the downtrodden, the weak, the sinful, the outcast, the doubter, and all God's chidren regardless of cultures, ethnicities, backgrounds, or any other matter that might divide us as a people of God. Thank you, thank you for sharing the life of this woman in such a beautiful way. God open the doors and windows of our Church to the needs of your people today.

Oh gosh it's Holy Thursday and I am not allowing myself to watch anything that is not appropriate to this holy day before I leave for Holy Thursday services. I happened upon this and started to watch and I have fallen in love with this holy, saintly woman... I've wept and smiled throughout at her incredible spirt, true deep and fully faithful Catholic witness, even in a time the Church was not very welcoming to blacks. Definitely praying for her canonization. Rest in peace dear Saint Sister Thea.

I have no words. Lord Jesus where are the Thea Bowmans in our Church today. And as I write these words I can hear Fr. Maurice's words - You are it and as are so many others.

My sister Melvene was a student and friend of Dr. Thea Bowman at Holy Child Jesus School in Canton, Mississippi.. She was a member of the choir when they recorded the album. We played that album over and over again. I remember going through the house while cleaning on Saturday morning singing and mimicking Dr. Thea Bowman's beautiful soprano voice singing Down by The Riverside and Go Down Moses.

It's probably just a prop placed in the photo-- perhaps to indicate she was "a fighter" and was doing her best to live through the pain of cancer.
