    I'll never forget flying into CLE in early July 1973. I was surprised that Hopkins was so busy that morning. I saw DC-10s from United, Northwest Orient, and American. My brother, who met me when my flight arrived, told me that, prior to my arrival, that he saw a United Boeing 747 as well as a second United DC-10.
    Man, I wish I had a time machine so I could take a quantum leap back to those days.

    That was fantastic, a video of CLE back during the energy crisis! United was a great line back then and had an all-star american fleet. DC_8s, DC10s and those workhorse 727s. Imagine 737s as cutting edge? I especially enjoyed the quick drive up and the DC8s four engines guzzling fuel and rattling every window on the west side...Thanks a lot for sharing.

    This was fantastic. I was born in '67, so you'd think I'd remember this old United livery but, by the time I had become interested in aviation, United had moved on to the rainbow colors.

    Wow!! Thank-you so much for memory lane. Thank-you all you commenters for sharing your details. I never made it to CLE, but this does remind me of ORD’s observation platform. Except for the noise, I loved flying the 737-100’s, -200’s. It was so much fun to watch the blow-in doors on the nacelles operate if you sat in front of the wing. But, if you sat behind it, the operation of the flaps and clamshell thrust reversers were exceptionally entertaining, especially if the runway was wet. Thank-you again for posting this, and thank-you to the rest of you all for your great comments.

  • @benbatesphd

    Watching this fondly reminded me of the roar of the engines - especially the 727s and the DC-8s. They announced your departure into the jet age. :-)
    Thanks for posting.

    My very first flight was on a United Airlines DC-8 Super Sixty series in the old Friendship livery. Couldn't have been more than 6 years old. BWI (Friendship Airport back then) to San Francisco. I was immediately fascinated with airplanes and still love watching the old jets on your channel. You do a great job of bringing back some very fond memories. Thanks again and Semper Fi!

    Gotta be careful driving through Linndale, but then I didn't see any blue/red in your rearview mirror. I spent my childhood a large part of my childhood on the berms of Brookpark road. In fact, the shot of the Brookpark road bridge crossing the Rocky River Reservation shows my childhood home! Oh the nostalgia is killin' me! Caravelles, Viscounts, Electra's, Connies, DC-6/7/8/9/10's, the ubiquitous B727,-37's. I loved the stars and bars, and I thought the 732 was the sexiest little thing flying....swooning.....

    I like United Airlines Cleveland Hopkins International Airport hub from the 70s 80s and early 90s era 1970 to 1993 era those are my best memories Delta Airlines had Cleveland to Atlanta Follow by Cleveland to Cincinnati

  • @cameraman655
    @cameraman655 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    It is fascinating that CLE was such a sizable hub (rather a 'Focus City' in today's parlance) for UA, given the city's size at the time and distance from ORD. UA and NW DC-10s on the ramp, several DC-8s and a ton of 721s, now look at CLE, kinda sad and a reminder that an "airline can giveth and taketh away".

    • @chicagoman58
      @chicagoman58 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      CLE was one of United's largest hubs in the early 70s, before deregulation.

    • @chicagoman58
      @chicagoman58 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      CLE was a secondary hub in the 70's at least partly due to United's merger with Capitol Airlines in the early 60s and also due to the fact that the airlines were regulated back then and could not rearrange routes without approval from the Civil Aeronautics Board.

      Wasn't Cleveland's airline designation "CVG" back then? Now(2018) "CVG" is Cincinnati, which I seem to remember was "CKE" back then, and now Cinci is "CVG"??? Can anyone help on this?

    • @SaveF9
      @SaveF9 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cincinnati has always been CVG because the airport is located in CoVinGton, Kentucky. I'm pretty sure Cleveland has always been CLE

  • @captbrakeset7630

    Maybe someone here knows - in the mid-90s there was an approach to CLE for southern or southeastern arrivals over over the suburbs, not downtown, with lots of turning, descend and hold then descend again. Landing to the NE, rwy 6 (?). Flew more like going into LGA where you're avoiding JFK, EWR traffic. Seemed like we were staying out of something's way. Wasn't terrain. Later it seemed like every approach was over the lake. Or maybe the Mad Dogs couldn't handle it the way the little -9s could!
