    having the rope sit behind the lure on like a split ring could give it more action along with the benefit of being able to replace the rope once tarnished. Love ur videos!

    The other poster said to tease out the fibers with a hairbrush. After you do that, loop the fibers back. Make the loops different lengths. This makes a bunch of loops around the Gars teeth when it chews the lure, keeps em on better. We used to tie Wooly buggers (fly) with the soft (loop) side of velcro. Brown Trout would spit out our flies as soon as they realized the weren't bugs. The loop velcro gets looped around their teeth and they keep the fly in their mouth longer so we could feel the fish and set the hook. Probably would work on the gar lure too

    You should make a series of making various food lures to see if fish like human food. I just thought that would be pretty entertaining. Keep up the good work.

    My old fishing buddy gave an essay of a post earlier about our experience fishing for gar. He said that gar will generally only bite things they think they can fit in their mouths, we tend to use smaller lures and shorter sections of rope (4-6in). Something that really helps us with retaining them on a bite is burning the end of the nylon rope together with a lighter. This prevents their teeth from sliding off of the back of the lure. My friend did let me know that he no longer does that though and instead doubles the rope back up to the lure to make loops at the end. I also agree that they very much like baits with a good amount of flash. When we first started using rope lures we didn’t have anything but rope and a jighead in our lures. The gar were not nearly as interested as they had been with the inline spinners and other flashy lures that we were using to fish for other species.

    @cass148 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think as a challenge, you make a lure out of a bunch of popsicle sticks glued together. I’d assume the wood could be pretty light and maybe stronger than some would think. Keep it up and I love the vids. They are inspiring me to get into baitmaking as well!

    Sorry for the triple comment; if I could give one recommendation on the rope rig, taking an old hairbrush to the rig really helps separate the fibers. I haven't done any tests, but feel it helps a lot with the action, & would reckon it helps with securing fish 🤙

    • @bjcox6695
      @bjcox6695 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Last tip: no hookset, open the bail and let 'em run for a bit 🙏💜 They run with their prey and shake it to death like a dog with a rabbit, and that's when they get snagged up in the rope!

      @Edie655 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      From experiance have you caught anything other than gars with this method? We only have northern pike in ths uk so wondering if this would work as well?

    • @bjcox6695
      @bjcox6695 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Edie655 I've only ever caught gar with it, but I admittedly doubt it'd work for Pike. Gar teeth are pretty puely conical (think pokey stabby; e.g., nail) whereas Pike teeth are also sharp on the sides (pokey stabby, but also shreddy slicy; e.g., knife, and their hunting techniques differ a bit as a result; the rope works on Gar because they tend to grab prey in the front of their mouths, run with it for a bit & then shake it around (like a dog killing a snake or a rabbit), and they'll do that a few times with each "bait" they take (rope, in this case) before eventually working it back to their throat; that head-thrashing is what gets them tangled up in the rope.
      I can't say it won't work on Pike, but I am doubtful that the action/design of this bait will be your best bet for triggering strikes, and I personally think their teeth would just shred the rope if one did decide to slam it. If you do try it & landna pike, I wish you the best of luck with getting the rope out of a Pike's gullet. 🙏

Then the “backwards” one goes on the right side. Like running a flag into battle, just depends on which side you’re on.

    Getting technical here: The stars end of the flag always gets oriented to the front in the direction of travel. For this lure, you put them on backwards. The blue side should be nearest to the nose of the bait. That's why you got eyes with the flag facing both directions (and not the same direction). This began in the Airforce. The flag will look normal on the left, but the right side of the plane is painted backwards so the flag appears to be flying in the wind.

    • @J_L22

    • @treytreytrey
      @treytreytrey 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wait you’re right. They’re two different directions. I thought only one was backwards. My bad

    • @Justtomstuff
      @Justtomstuff 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He specifically said, "one of the flags will have to be backwards". I also have yet to see the eye on the other side in this video.

    • @BornIn1500
      @BornIn1500 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Justtomstuff You're not understanding it. 6:57 is the left side and has the stars towards the rear. 7:06 is the right side and also has the stars towards the rear. He has them backwards and they should be swapped. Both sides should instead have the stars towards the nose and that's the whole reason for why the flag was printed in both directions. Think of it as though the lure has a flagpole... and then moves forward. How would the flag look from both sides? Regardless, it really doesn't matter to me. I was just making an observation.
