  • Gigafactory Texas! This is where Model Y’s, and Cyber Truck production happens and soon, the Next Generation Car!
    What a gorgeous sunrise and start to the day at Giga Texas today! the weather was ideal for flying and video, and I tried to take advantage of the lighting to see inside several sections of the south end and the Boring Tunnel itself!
    Timestamps:
    Drone flight overview with discussion & illustration: 0:06 to 4:14
    Drone flight footage & infographics: 4:31 to 33:33
    On news-worthy even happened I wanted to point out while I was flying on the north end, and that was a trash trailer fire on the west side of General Assembly. I include a video clip of this event in the video intro.
    I first started smelling something that seemed like burning plastic but I was not sure where it was as it was partially hidden from where I was standing flying the drone, but then several firetrucks and equipment started arriving with their alarms blaring & lights on, so I tracked them over to the west side of General Assembly #1 and saw a trash truck was on fire and employees had been evacuated from the building.
    The firetrucks were able to get the trailer doused with water quickly and put out the fire, also pulling out some of the burning items onto the concrete apron. Nobody was injured, the evacuation was orderly and employees quickly began re-entering the building to get back to work.
    On the south end, we see crews active on every level of the extension and a lot of equipment, internal walls, pipes and manifolds bridge cranes, temporary stairs, different ground floor grades and much more. I spend some time looking into the well-lit interior of the south end and the west side of the extension, and also, some of the work going on with the cooling plant and huge water supply pipes being installed in trenches.
    On the southeast side of the cooling plant, we see the lined pond getting some additional work, including a possible location for a pump house and a trench at the bottom for a filtration system. Rip-Rap is being installed along the berm of the original pond, possibly for drainage and erosion control.
    We see many Cybertrucks on the old east side temporary testing lot today, confirming inventory does change here. Many of these Cybertrucks are awaiting some kind of final work before heading over to the outbound lot on the west side of the highway.
    On the east side of the casting machine section, we see crews continuing to work on the bag house plant steel structure, forms and concrete mounts for equipment and tanks, and a large rectangular section with forms for walls. Farther north, more work on the ground area with crew-type piers and receiving door reworks. on the North end of casting, resumed trenching for electrical conduit which will extend through the north parking lot, under Tesla Road and into the clearing just north of Tesla Road, where more crews were working on extending the conduit.

    5:56. Southend, east. Apron. Bottom right. Rebar cages for the fire escape tunnel extensions likely.
    6:18. Parking Garage. Top left. Some vehicles on Level 1 and 2, a few on 3, other floors empty.
    7:11. Southend, south. Level 1. Permanent stair installed above the east fire escape passage. Level 2 of the Data Centre has been extended into the general Southend area. These stairs can serve the Data Centre also.
    7:29. Southend, south. Stairs above the fire escape passages are quite wide. I don’t think there is room for an elevator. No sign of an elevator shaft. Seems the passages are dedicated fire escapes only. Same arrangement at 7:49 and 8:18.
    8:25. Southend, west diagonal corner. Top left. Scaffold projecting past the building line.
    9:05. Southend, west diagonal corner. Level 1. In front of the plywood clad wall, more black bollards. Similar in front of the windows.
    9:56. Southend, west. Level 1. Blue water storage trailer, green manifold to the right, pump behind.
    Level 2. Large pipes on the floor can only be temporary.
    10:22. Southend, west. Level 1. Bottom right. View of the narrow passage that is likely a stair well up to the raised floor on the south side. Other end almost visible at 8:18.
    11:12. Main Entrance. Stoneglass. 3 edge pieces have dislodged. Cement based adhesive still leaching.
    12:01. EOL, north. Cafeteria. Back end of a knuckle-boom just visible inside.
    14:19. Westside, storage. AUS SX-1 RAH. Austin South Extension Level 1 Return Air Handling.
    16:18. Westside, old contractors parking lot. Welding lifting lugs on the front shield. To me this shows the TBM is to be re-used.
    18:13. Westside, Tunnel Project. Bottom right. 3 ‘Wall connector’ chargers at the other end of the cable to the Tesla.
    18:28. Westside, Tunnel Project. Evidently 2 changes in angle in this shot. Utilities supports along the wall an indication also.
    21:58. Southend, east. Tank Farm. Spillage containment wall being constructed around the tanks.
    22:09. Southend, east pond. Centre, near the excavator. Black pipe quite visible poking out from the corner of the pond. Seepage monitoring likely.
    Left. Black pipe that might be the inlet from the Cooling Tower visible where the liner has been pulled back.
    23:53. Windtunnel. Cybertrucks seen here over the last week. Maybe part of the sorting out of the issues with the rear trims.
    25:11. Casting, east. Baghouse structure. Going higher as shown by the connection plates for bracing on top of the beams.
    30:18. Cathode, east. Permit current for ‘Cathode Recycle Expansion’. Permit is for the fire alarm.
    30:58. Cathode, east. Electrical control cabinets.

    So doing some math here. Check me to see if I'm doing this right. 500MW for the data center. That's like an entire unit at a power plant. Anyway the circuits that are being added from the substation to the NE corner of the building then run along the roof must be to carry that load. So to figure the Amps at 25 kV (Maybe it's 35kV) would be
    500MW = 500,000,000W ÷ 25,000 ÷ 1.73 = 4,620 Amps total. At 35kV this would be 3,300A. This is per phase on a 3 phase system.
    I count a total of 8 circuits coming from the substation to the building assuming 3 conduits per circuit. So 4,620A ÷ 8 = 578A at 25 kV or 413A at 35kV. That is a lot.
    What about the transformers? They do not look like 500MW transformers to me. Standard practice would be to install large enough transformers so that one can be out of service and the other carry the entire load. Out of service is usually for maintenance but could be due to an outage.

      Someone can help me out if I get this wrong....
      I = P ÷ (√3 x V x PF)
      Where
      I is Current
      P is Power
      √3 = 1.732
      V is Voltage
      PF is Power Factor.
      The medium voltage cables to the factory are 24.9 kV, close enough to 25 kV.
      There are 12 new circuits per duct-bank going to the building. However... At the moment, only 8 conduits per duct-bank actually enter the building. But let's count 12 circuits, considering future expansion.
      Let's assume a power factor of 1.
      So (500 MW) 500,000,000 watts ÷ (1.732 x 345,000 x 1) = 836.76 Amps taken from LCRA's 345 kV lines.
      Primary side of the transformers = 836.76 Amps ÷ 2 = 418.38 Amps per transformer primary, (Not counting existing factory load).
      Secondary side of the transformers @ 25 kV
      500,000,000 watts ÷ (1.732 x 25000 volts x 1) = 11,547.34 Amps.
      11,547.34 ÷ 2 = 5,773.7 Amps per transformer secondary (Not counting existing factory load).
      5,773.7 Amps ÷ 12 circuits = 481.1 Amps per 3 phase circuit.
      That means ALL 24 circuits (12 x 2) are used. No redundancy!
      Considering the likely existing load on LCRA's system, and the existing factory load on the substation....
      This whole thing seems unlikely. But I can't prove it wrong for sure.

    We have now witnessed the many month process of building a short one lane access road for moving new vehicles under a four lane highway fromthe factory to storage lot. I would be very interested in a comparison of building the tunnel versus building an overpass for the same purpose. Are there any highway building professionals who would like to weigh in on comparing the two in terms of costs, usefulness and time to construct. Thank you very much.

    • @CarlWithACamera
      @CarlWithACamera 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Building an overpass is well-established engineering. The boring machine used to create that tunnel was, as I understand, going through a lot of development proofing and so that greatly slowed the progress. Therefore not an appropriate comparison.

    • @WarrenLacefield
      @WarrenLacefield 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Well, I'll add a note here I think is amusing. Consider how very long it has taken the Germans to approve, construct, and finally open a two-lane one-way overpass at Giga-Berlin. That operation makes The Boring Company look like the rabbit compared to the turtle. 🙂

    • @Bill_N_ATX
      @Bill_N_ATX 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      The other issue is getting approval for an overpass over the toll road. While it’s only three lanes at the moment, with the way that Central Texas has grown and how traffic on the toll road has grown, they’d probably want the overpass built for many lanes and fairly elevated too. Don’t have a clue which one is cheaper long term, but I guess they got a deal.

    • @timsteinkamp2245
      @timsteinkamp2245 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I wonder that too. In many cities they dig out a subway tunnel then cover it for the above ground traffic. So I think an underpass. With the amount of concrete they have poured and dug up they could have built a huge underpass under the freeway 12 lanes wide. Maybe it has to do with the water table.

    • @Bill_N_ATX
      @Bill_N_ATX วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@timsteinkamp2245 Well, that method, called cut and cover, is popular and can be done in wet environments using large pumps or in really wet environments using massive chillers that uses supercooled glycol loops driven on both sides of the path to freeze the ground so its ice, and there for a possiblity almost anywhere. The big issue is while that was a possibility before the toll rode was built, there is no way they are going to allow shutdown of the road to allow a dig. So it’s a moot point.

    And all those other sci fi movies. I thought life depicted in those movies was fantastic
    and then I look at an Apollo capsule. It seemed so retarded to me to be using 1 mission space capsules. Then the shuttles arrived and that was a step in the right direction but
    still a long way from Sci Fi. The shuttle could not take off by themselves they had to piggyback on a old school rocket. It was really depressing. It seemed to me for us to
    catch up to the movies would take us about 500 years. I finally realized I wouldnt
    witness any of that in my lifetime. Thats when my fire began to go out. And now, look
    what Boeing has built for Nasa. Another GD capsule. They call it STARLINER OOHHHHHH a way cool sci fi name but in fact just another old fashion capsule. Do you suppose they used the Gemini plans? 1 step forward and 2 steps back. Anyway I lost my zeel. Not only

      I'm sorry you lost your enthusiasm. Science fiction is indeed technologically imaginative, but like most all fiction, it is really about peoples and cultures and how they might behave in alternative circumstances. Today we are at the tepee and canoe stage of space travel. Baby steps; by analogy, to early towns and fleets of tall sailing ships; then to modern cities and cruise ships, carriers, and nuclear subs; eventually (with some sci-fi technology improvements - e.g., inertial dampers and gravity control perhaps, maybe shielding, etc.) to off-world destinations and Star Trek-like starships. (Although it does look like we should see C3PO characters a bit quicker than that. 🙂But as people, we are already arguing about that, as sci-fi predicts.)

That is why I don't get Mars. Until man can prove himself on this planet then manned space exploration is a waste of time and money. Even though I believe everything we see is uploaded to a cloud during our sleep for our future, someday we will communicate with ESP and even release our body atoms and be able to transport through space and recreate our body somewhere else but it will take God to give us that power. It is what I would consider ultimate trans-humanism.

    New power supply to the building:
    @ 28:29 (Across the easement by the vaults) It is likely that we are looking at the flat surface of the top of the existing main power duct-banks. Which now supply power to the building. The new duct-banks must cross over them.
    Also, at the end of the conduit on the left, you can see the black spacers. Which maintain proper conduit spacing during the concrete pour.

      @WarrenLacefield 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jbbuzzable Why not? Radio control works through concrete and dirt (or in the air from one end to the other). Drones (maybe not always flying ones) are used to explore caves and tunnels and buildings.
      But it would not be spectacular. We have all driven though tunnels and know what they look like. You can ride though them via videos in Las Vegas. What might be interesting is to see a Cybertruck drive through. The CT is wider, I think, than a Model Y. Obviously, I'm sure it will go through easily (maybe under FSD control), but the clearance of The Boring Tunnels in LV seems a bit tight to me (like some city parking garage circular ramps).
      Edit: The CT with side mirrors folded is 88.6"; unfolded, it is 95". A Model Y is 75.24" wide. The Boring Tunnel, I think, has an internal diameter of 12' or 144", but the width at the roadway surface is somewhat less than that, probably closer to 110" or 115".
