    Tamdhu Brand Ambassador here:
    Great videos as always Erik-
    Might I just add- the Tamdhu 12 won the best 12 year old in the Speyside region at the Spirit of Speyside last year! We also won the best 18 year old the same night, and our distillery manager won the Scottish ambassador of the year.
    Slainte. 🥃

      Congratulations! I wish you guys provided distillery tours. I'll be in Scotland for my 4th (and maybe final) trip April 12 - 26, 2024.

    Here in Germany its 80€ Macallan at 40% ABV vs 55€ Tamdhu at 43% abv - what makes this discussion not much of a discussion at all.

      Do you have a site/dealer/shop for where whiskies are affordable in Germany? In Nederland we have: Drankdozijn.

    Here in Australia it's no comparison between Tamdhu 12 and The Macallan 12 (in all its variations).
    Tamdhu at 43% vs the 40% Macallan's we get here in Oz. Tamdhu all the way. Unfortunately because of government taxes (third highest alcohol taxes in the world!), we only get 40% versions of many whiskies and bourbons.

    It's not the level of the Tamdhu 15, but it's half the price. (only $62 for me) Far more reliable of a sherry bomb than a Glenfarclas, I get a distinct dry sherry sulfuric note from Macallan, and a coconut note I can't stand. The fact that it's way more than the Tamdhu is a complete nail in the coffin.

    Great rake over the coal shoutout on pricing for us Canucks. Tamdhu 12 runs anywhere from $90-$110 and Macallan 12 Double Cask $120-$150 CAD. At those prices, it would be a pass on both of them for me. I had purchased Macallan Sherry 12 Sherry oak a couple of years ago and it is halfway down. Although somewhat anemic, the sherry casks Macallan uses seem to be excellent. I have 3 sherry finished whiskies on the go and the Macallan 12 Sherry is distinctively different in a good way.

    I paid cad100 (usd72) for the Tamdu 12 last summer, and up to this past summer, the Macallan 12DC was the same price in Ontario, Canada. Just a warning. The DC is now cad150, so expect a big price increase everywhere. Both Maccallan and High Park have had huge price increases here, and they are owned by the same company (charity, I think).

    Thanks for doing reviews on whiskies I can actually find. A lot of reviews now seem to on fairly difficult bottles to find.

    My local Total Wine is betting big on Tamdhu this year. They got prominent shelf placement and nearly all the core range and an IB is featured. You see Tamdhu before you get to Macallan so there is something there.

    Eric, suggest you compare Macallan 12 double cask against Glenmorangie Lasanta 12 yr.

    • @WhskAZCL
      @WhskAZCL 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @dennis85573 Have you had the Lasanta? I have had the entire core range of Glenmos and to me, they are all borrowing the heart of the 10 plus adding the flavors of an extra finishing time. I feel like Lasanta is little harsh and on a different ball park from the Tamdhu or Macallan. If you're wondering for a budget sherry scotch maybe try a glendronach 12, glenallachien12 or for the sake of putting out a controversy, a lovely (sarcasm) 40% dalmore. - advice, go with the sherry special @43%😉

    In Sweden it's exactly the same price on these two, 699sek ($62) but the Tamdhu comes at 43%abv and the Macallan at 40%abv. So to me the choice is simple....Tamdhu every day of the week. 🍷cheers

    I have Tamdhu batch 4, which apparently is the worst cask strength.... But it's AMAZING. If this one is the"worst", I can't wait to try the best

    Thanks for the review, Erik. Tamdhu is a distillery I've explored, but prices for Tamdhu are massively on the rise here in the UK. A good alternative price wise when compared to Macallan, but that's an easy price to beat and I think Tamdhu know that, so as long as they are 'cheaper' than Macallan then they have a market who will pay the higher prices riding on the coat tales of the Macallan type of custom. That's not a criticism, just an opinion. Tamdhu no doubt produce lovely whisky but I see them looking to go the way of Macallan.
    The almond note is the cyanide in the cask, Macallan espionage! 😂

    In my country, Tamdhu 12 is 40$ and Macallan 12 Double Cask is 130$...you can get your own conclusion. Slainte, Eric!

    Nice, I like the Tamdhu 12. A better comparison might be comparing it to the Macallan 12 sherry oak.

    • @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies
      @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Macallan Sherry Oak is $90 in my area. $20 more than Double Cask. So the price comparison would be off.

      @@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies funny how that works, Tamdhu 12 is actually more expensive than either version of the Mac 12 in my neck of the woods.

      I like the tamdhu over the double cask but I’m choosing mac12 sherry over both I’m in California as well and sherry in total wine is about 70-80 but goes on sale to 69 often cheers

    Interesting comparison, thanks Erik.
    In nz the Tamdhu 12 ranges usd57-67, while Macallan 12 double cask, at 40%abv, ranges usd76-95. An easy choice, right? Except that I had a small shop sample of the T12 and it seemed very understated/shy. Maybe a dud bottle--or taster?--I don't know. Macallan, though, just doesn't tempt.

    I’m having trouble identifying where the medicinal or band aid note comes through in some scotch. I thought it was peat but noticed it in the classic laddie which is unpeated. Is it something in the process or distillate itself or possibly from aging?

    • @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies
      @ErikWaitWhiskyStudies  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have only picked up medicinal notes in Laphroaig. If you get a funky chemical smell from not only the whisky but also the cork, then the bottles may have TCA (trichloroanisole) which could be caused by bad corks.

    Actually a hot shower would open up your sinuses and your blood vessels a cold shower constricts. Could it have been a scented soap or shampoo who knows. I’m a fan of both this scotches and they are very affordable in my area.
