This is true. But, Blizzard Studio is...inspired by their aesthetic more so than their potency. And they wanted to give their Prime Evil a sort of weight that "oh no, he took down Valor himself! How will we *ever* beat him now?" Etc. Besides, if the forces of good is so overpowered, there wouldn't be much for the protagonist to do, or something along that line of reasoning. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Diablo get a proper smacking from Imperius. But either way, Diablo fell thanks to the combined effort of man and angel in the story, so I'm satisfied all the same.
Um if you play the game diablo is no ordinary demon he is the embodiement of all the greatest demons to have ever lived combined, and ironically *spoilers* Its not the angels who defeat him, but a human being.

They were basically nerfed by Inarius when he grew fearful of their potential, up until our protagonist awakens his/her inner powers many centuries later etc. So, technically, angelic (and demonic) strength did vanquish Diablo, after a fashion.
