In the Japanese version I saw, Hiro was a med student, so that's why he knew so much about the bacteria. Also, he gives himself up to the detective out of some Japanese sense of duty. The monster sprout from the bacteria that infected them all. The got infected because of a malfunction that happened when Lily-C.A.T. maneuvered the ship to collect the sample and it ended up in the water supply. This water supply was also link to their "cryogenic" pod. Also, the Lily-C.A.T. was not murderous but wanted to prevent the infection to spread back to Earth or something like that. They discovered that a planet's magnetic field would prevent the bacteria from turning them into monster and it's the collective fused-monsters who are incinerated when they are entering the atmosphere of the planet that they will never be able to leave afterward. Lastly, there are 2 cats : one real and one is the computer. So the cat that is eaten is of course the biological one while the other was put there by Weilan-Yutany, I mean the company, to make adjustment to the ship to prevent damage or to overrule the captain and it's crew in case of emergency. It is not evil, just a fail-safe. The thing that bugged me was that the people carrying guns were not members of the crew... That makes absolutely no sense to me... Than the detective takes the gun but no one knows yet he is a police officer... How come the captain allowed that ?!
I'm kinda bummed Brandon didn't mention the fact Yoshitaka Amano did the creature designs for its forms. THE Yoshitaka Amano; the guy behind Vampire Hunter D's design and every Final Fantasy game. That's worth a mention lol

The original ending in Japanese is quite a bit grimmer and Hiro's (named Jiro in the original) philosophizing makes more sense in that context. In the original, the alien monster begins crying out Nancy and Jiro's names as it burns up in the atmosphere, revealing that at least some part of their crewmates' consciousness lived on in the alien. As the shuttle descends, Jiro remarks that it won't be long before they, too, are overcome by the infection and turn into an alien (this remark isn't in the dub). The "butterfly vs caterpillar" philosophy is Jiro self-soothing that maybe turning into an alien abomination won't be so bad. Once the credits end, the handcuffs - the ones dangling from Jiro's wrist - fall to the floor. He (and presumably Nancy) have been transformed. The cat meowing at the end is the last remnant of the original alien, the only part that didn't burn up in the atmosphere - the cat was the only part of the original crew not seen burning on the shuttle.
The eyes of cats do glow, that's nothing special. And social commentary is part of what makes Alien such a great movie. Talking at length seems to be such a prevalent thing in Japanese media that I often wonder if it doesn't get too much for the Japanese audiences. What I didn't get is how the cat becomes a threat. It's a robot, so the alien legionella can't possibly absorb it, and it's in charge of the ship. Is that like in Space Odyssey, where the ship cares so much about the mission that it decides to do it alone, or something?
Yes, that darn CAT doesn't seem to do anything to help the crew. As it can't seem to do anything itself then they are the best chance to contain or eliminate the threat to the ship and the mission. It should be doing everything it can to assist them.
I'm guessing you didn't watch the movie? The cat subplot is basically knocking off Allen's first android and that corporation trying to study alien organism, crew is expendable, deals. The cat is there to ensure the company's interests are maintained without human interference or judgement, messing up with things.
They had the perfect opportunity to have Lily fight the alien, cat vs cat, robot vs tentacle monster, and didn’t take it. Where Lily is Mother and desperately trying to keep blonde girl and deep thoughts mcgee alive, moving them around while the alien keeps developing new ways to get to them. The alien doing freaky shit while Lily uses the appliances onboard to keep it at bay would’ve been fun to see. Oh well.
I always thought maybe the cat in Alien was supposed to be there to draw a comparison between Xenomorph nature and human nature, how humans can often be kinder to small animals than they are to other people. Some of the most disturbing accounts of first world behavior I've ever heard came from a prison environment, focusing on one group and contrasting their cruel behavior toward people outside of the group as opposed to how caring and protective they were of a stray cat that the guards allowed them to look after. These people were capable of doting on a kitten right after literally searing someone's flesh off with hot wires, all because the person in question got their group's tattoos as a way to try to appeal to them, not knowing the price he'd pay for getting the all important inking without first getting their permission. Every time I see the Xenomorph and the cat cross paths in the original Alien, I immediately think of these people and how there are real people who are much more cruel and frightening than any Xenomorph ever has been.
i kinda get old man wolverine though. He's lived through 2 alien attacks and a cloning/resurrection. He was just doing what any good mother would and cleaned up after his bastard alien son.
Whoa, the trippy anime ending for the alien at the end? James Cameron got his revenge! He used that effect at the finale for T2, when the T-1000 hit the molten metal.
I saw this in japanese recently and it made more sense: the Lily-C.A.T. was put there by the company to monitor the ship and the crew, to correct mistake made by them and to insure the interest of the company were prioritize over the decision the crew might make. The company makes the best it can with the ship's travel: it has to collect sample and other data from the travel. The sort of geo/pod that was collect fell into the water supply because of a malfunction, not by design, which is why all the crew members are already infected, which leads to them transforming into monsters (there are several of them in the japanese version which fuse - if I recall correctly). There is also a corrosion of the ship, which is why it's so easy for the captain to blow it up. This corrosion is also caused by the alien entities. The main character is a medical student and does not go casually with the detective. Some sort of sense of duty, kind of to honor is dedication. I have seen the same thing in real yakusa trials were they proudly announce there affiliation. Which is how he can explain the legionnaire's disease. The movie reference a real case that happened in real life and it was the A/C system that was at fault. Even though the only two survivors are also infected (like the rest of the crew), they discovered that the magnetic fields of planet will staves of the entity, so that is why they make a run for it in the shuttle. What I do not understand and cannot accept is the fact that there is a shotgun aboard the ship!! That caracter is not a member of the crew, he is not security! Same thing goes with the detective... So why would the captain allows first the moron to bring its shotgun, second allows said moron to walk around freely with a loaded weapon, and third to let the detective grabs it afterward?!?!?
Beat me to it by a year. That was a good one because they robbed Fort Knox and we're waiting for the statute of limitations to run out. They wind up killing each other, dying from dehydration or starvation, and it finishes up with some people finding the last one dying and being confused why he thought gold was worth something since they can now create gold.

The "clever idea" for crooks using suspended animation to escape justice was explored by ROD SERLING's Twilight Zone in the episode known as "The Rip Van Winkle Caper"!
That stasis idea was actually used in a twilight zone episode I think. A bunch of thieves go into stasis for a hundred years to avoid the heat after stealing some gold.

No joke, the idea of cryo-hibernation in space movies is an intriguing one. Imagine going out into space for a job, take 50 years flight that, for you, wasn't any more than a year, then back another 50. Two years for you and everyone you knew and loved is gone. Who knows if anyone is around to even remember you. It's a sad thought to be sure... But SPACE AIDS!
I've read fiction that has that, and... it's only rarely shown as actually being common for people to have this as a proper career. Ender's game uses this logic of multi-year trips, and... only a tiny handful of people regularly do deep space travel at all. Which is why having an inter-stellar war was such a big deal. You can't just.... send a fleet to counter-attack as the invaders will have YEARS to attack before you can get there. Maybe they'll have moved on before your fleet arrives?
This film is another one that just traumatized me so I cant forget it. Like many, first watched it in the 90s on the Scifi channel at 2AM. I saw it again 15-20 years later looking for dubbed anime films. Its weird but very good as a horror film with plenty of gore. Its a combination of Alien, The Thing, and Leviathan. One thing not mentioned is that there are actually THREE kind of alien/bacteria as threats in this film. One is the original bacteria inside some the crew. The second is bacteria that morphed to eat metal and is slowly eating the ship. The Third is the shapeshifting monster. So the crew have to worry about dying from the inside, being eaten/absorbed by the monster, or the ship falling apart before they get to a habitable planet. I find it interesting that the one girl who wandered off alone to get a scan to see if she was infected just disappeared without any gore. I think thats called a Gory Discretion Shot trope. Later on you see why you would wouldnt want to see happen to a woman as with the porn-stached detective was UNRAVELED like a ball of string. Do you see how I cannot forget it?
"Seriously, it's the only thing the alien doesn't try to kill in the movie and it's present when it does kill people. I wouldn't be surprised if these two were actually in cahoots." Now I think about it, is it possible the cat in alien was secretly evil the whole time?
you want another freaky alien cat movie? I recommend The Green Cat. It was an animated film created by famous manga artist Osamu Tezuka and based on one of his short stories told in his Lion Books series. It's a decent flick with a recognizable Tezuka character and an interesting feline villain.
The cat death made me sad, because it was only there for that stupid robot cat duplicate reveal. Honestly would have made more sense and been a lot cooler if one of the human imposters had been the robot instead.
ColonielLizardT4 all of the “good anime” i ever saw i saw there first... years later it was the only reason i wanted the syfy channel and it’s what i think of when i see anime DVDs... the only titles i can remember are Akira, Venus Wars, Vampire Hunter D, Project Ako, Tank police and that one with the sword fighting prince & galactic police... if you know the titles to any others let me know, i loved that stuff soo much!
ColonielLizardT4 I’m 21, but I remember being too young the last time I saw that Sci-Fi (before it was SyFy) aired anime. I’m still old enough to also remember CourtTV before it was TruTV.
Not sure if I should say this, but boy GOLLY is there a hugely violent cat death shown! To anyone who WOULDN'T want to see it, it starts at 7:05 and ends at 7:15.
Series 5, episode 3 of "The Avengers" was called "Escape in Time" and used the concept of criminals escaping through time travel. (That's British Avengers, not Marvel Avengers, for all you young 'uns.)
yes i think they would be also great together but i thought brendan and decker do the same things but are also pretty different a Crossover would be really interessting
Had to make a separate, happier comment to applaud you for reminding me of Ajax the duck. Just hearing him speak a single word immediately reminds me of all of his brilliant lines and, of course, the majesty of Dod. :D
Wow, what a journey through youtube I have had today. While this movie seemed decent, you mentioned Felidae twice. So I went looking for it, expecting a flaming pile of cat-shaped garbage. But it was amazing! I genuinely had so much fun with the movie, all cat-boning aside. It was like a film noir mystery with Gothic overtones...and talking cats. Then I watched your review of it, which was also funny. I think we ended up making a lot of the same jokes in the end.
5:10 And no one's the least bit curious why a cat who's been out of cryosleep for twenty years is still as young and healthy as the day they left Earth?
DUDE I laughed so fuckn hard at your diagnosis of this 80s anime gem... First saw this on Saturday anine on the sci-fi channel and even then when I was easily entertained by anime I saw this for a massive Alien ripoff and typical run on endless sentences from the cast. There's actually a reason for this. When Lily CAT was originally dubbed into English and released in North America, it was done by the now-defunct Streamline Pictures, whom were notorious for their dub actors talking in run-on sentences, not to mention dumbing down the original scripts of the anime TV shows, OVAs, and movies that they licensed.
Just discovered your channel. Dude I’m torn between pride and horror that I’ve watched almost all the weird shit you review. Fucking love weird cult flicks. And you’ve even introduced me to a few that somehow escaped my voracious appetite for bad horror and sci-fi and weird ass Kung fu. You my friend are now among my heroes. Four out of my four hedgehogs agree you rock.
It's funny that the English dub of this includes some of the gang from Robotech, so you can imagine it as a weird Macross and Alien hybrid...with Robotech. Oh, and do Robotech the Movie. It's bad. Then do the good one,. Macross Do You Remember Love, the subtitled version, not the Attack of the Bionoids one.
It's the Thing plus Alien meets 2001 A Space Oddessy in a cat. I actually liked this despite all the exposition, I feel like if it was a show it'd feel more natural.

"Seriously, it's the only thing the alien doesn't try to kill in the movie and it's present when it does kill people. I wouldn't be surprised if these two were actually in cahoots." Now I think about it, is it possible the cat in alien was secretly evil the whole time?
The cat was innocent, it just knew. It was probably just like that smart girl who survived.
I'm sure that cat inspired this concept.
just proves that cats finally perfected mind control in the future.
you want another freaky alien cat movie? I recommend The Green Cat. It was an animated film created by famous manga artist Osamu Tezuka and based on one of his short stories told in his Lion Books series. It's a decent flick with a recognizable Tezuka character and an interesting feline villain.
The cat death made me sad, because it was only there for that stupid robot cat duplicate reveal. Honestly would have made more sense and been a lot cooler if one of the human imposters had been the robot instead.
You mean like in Alien
I laughed out loud during the character introductions. Well done sir.
I remember seeing this movie on Syfy (back then Sci-Fi Channel) a LONG time ago, who else remembers that time when Syfy used to show anime stuff?
ColonielLizardT4 all of the “good anime” i ever saw i saw there first... years later it was the only reason i wanted the syfy channel and it’s what i think of when i see anime DVDs... the only titles i can remember are Akira, Venus Wars, Vampire Hunter D, Project Ako, Tank police and that one with the sword fighting prince & galactic police... if you know the titles to any others let me know, i loved that stuff soo much!
I remember watching Ninja Scroll
saw vampire hunter D and wizards back to back in one night on syfy back in about 1997. back when it was still a decent channel.
ColonielLizardT4 I’m 21, but I remember being too young the last time I saw that Sci-Fi (before it was SyFy) aired anime. I’m still old enough to also remember CourtTV before it was TruTV.
I remember watching it in 2000 on sci-fi.
Felix the Cat who's became the demonic cat from hell in that animated movie of 1980's. Just like Pumpkinhead.
Not sure if I should say this, but boy GOLLY is there a hugely violent cat death shown!
To anyone who WOULDN'T want to see it, it starts at 7:05 and ends at 7:15.
2:45 8:12 14:49 reaction alien and cat best friend for ever 1:20 1:26 7:35 3:26 6:02 7:01
Series 5, episode 3 of "The Avengers" was called "Escape in Time" and used the concept of criminals escaping through time travel. (That's British Avengers, not Marvel Avengers, for all you young 'uns.)
Half expected Hiro to say 'The wisest and the best is to fix our attention on the good and the beautiful, if we just take the time to see it.'
You're some guy, Mahoney.
Maybe the Alien's cat was a flerken
Also Holly Molly that Blonde girl's shoulders are wider than mine
I’m shocked he didn’t make any Shaggy references about that one character.
you need to do something with decker shado
Draco Meteor this!!!
Like get him on Channel Awesome. Seriously though, a crossover would be nice, he's got the talent to be on with the rest of the critic comedians.
CrittersRule247 I want a Cinema snob / Brandon crossover !
yes
i think they would be also great together
but i thought
brendan and decker do the same things but are also pretty different
a Crossover would be really interessting
Draco Meteor Isi
Damn that opening music is fully perfect for horror. I have to use it for my horror campaign.
you should so team up to do some abridging of these movies, your dubs are fantastic
THE TWILIGHT ZONE
had an episode where
4 crooks went into cryogenic sleep
only to wake up in the future
This deserves a remake with a cut to the exposition.
8:20 Yeah, although Lily Cat came three years before Total Recall.
I liked on "Wolverine Abe Lincoln."
Had to make a separate, happier comment to applaud you for reminding me of Ajax the duck. Just hearing him speak a single word immediately reminds me of all of his brilliant lines and, of course, the majesty of Dod. :D
Ah, I remember Bennet the Sage reviewing this! This'll be interesting to see someone else's opinion on it.
I remember watch this a few years ago. This OVA was animated by Yoshitaka Amano, and was a combination of Alien and The Thing. It's pretty good.😊
6:57 Hey, this "John Carpenter's The Thing"-ripoff even has it's own Wilford Brimley.
This channel has ruined me. At one point as Hiro drones on explaining the situation, I blurted out, "Shut up, Kenny!"
I think we ended up making a lot of the same jokes in the end.
ikr!
I loved it in my childhood!
lmao That was an awesome Duckman reference.
The story implies that the supervisors sent all their most annoying employees into space just to get rid of them. Kind of like MST3K.
" There is an imposter on board. that is Suspect as hell. "
Wolverine Abe Lincoln -- FIVE-STAR riff, Brandon!!!
5:10 And no one's the least bit curious why a cat who's been out of cryosleep for twenty years is still as young and healthy as the day they left Earth?
He left out the scene where the cat was in cryo too
Holy shit, you weren't kidding about that guy being Screech.
I like the way you praise the parts of movies that deserve it.
Honestly the fact it's basically Alien mix with the Thing makes me want to watch this so bad it honestly looks good
For some reason got recommended this after watching a review for Uninvited
1:29 New i remember why the spaceship called covenant from Alien: Covenant looked familiar!
One thing I can definitely count on your show for is erotic imagery in movies. Wicked City being one of my favorites.
DUDE I laughed so fuckn hard at your diagnosis of this 80s anime gem...
First saw this on Saturday anine on the sci-fi channel and even then when I was easily entertained by anime I saw this for a massive Alien ripoff and typical run on endless sentences from the cast. Your awesome and thank you for covering this particular anime, you covered everything 🤣
Everyone in this movie speaks like this:
*breathes in*
Okaysowereabouttogointocryosleepforroughly20yearsandweregoingtoaplanetIdontreallyknowmuchaboutanditprobablyisnthospitableanywaybutwellonlyageoneyear.
okayhopeyougotallthat.
There's actually a reason for this. When Lily CAT was originally dubbed into English and released in North America, it was done by the now-defunct Streamline Pictures, whom
were notorious for their dub actors talking in run-on sentences, not to mention dumbing down the original scripts of the anime TV shows, OVAs, and movies that they licensed.
Sometime check out Bruno Mattei's "Shocking Dark".
Well worth an addition to the "Alien" knockoff movie list!
Abe Logan sounds like Spike's partner, Jet, on Cowboy Bebop or Hono/Ginn from Green Legand Ran. #justsaying

These days: Lets just look on their Facebook and make all our hiring choices based on their photos.

Please review Inseminoid.
14:00 I laughed my ass off
4:56 Ever read Neal Stephenson's novel Snow Crash? The main character is a Japanese-American named Hiro Protagonist. [Everybody groan now.]
1:26 And the cat is the one giving the orders.
It suddenly makes sense
It's funny that the English dub of this includes some of the gang from Robotech, so you can imagine it as a weird Macross and Alien hybrid...with Robotech. Oh, and do Robotech the Movie. It's bad. Then do the good one,. Macross Do You Remember Love, the subtitled version, not the Attack of the Bionoids one.
Probably some of the best editing on TH-cam
WOLVERLINCOLN/ABERINE/OLD MAN LINCOLN
d forman weapon four score
remember this from saturday anime back in the 90's. along with akira and demon city shinjoku (something like that).
He got Snow Crash jokes.
It's the Thing plus Alien meets 2001 A Space Oddessy in a cat. I actually liked this despite all the exposition, I feel like if it was a show it'd feel more natural.
