The coroner said her heart attack (she was thin) was the direct result of overdosing on caffeine. She did not smoke.

      Ron Paul always said the same thing, particularly the "If heroin was legal would you start doing it?" His son Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Democrats Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Cory Booker of New Jersey put forth a bill to remove federal prohibitions on medical marijuana in 23 states where it’s already legal. They said their unusual coalition is a sign of growing acceptance of medical marijuana. Evidently, even the politicians are wising up.

  • @TheHallucinati
    @TheHallucinati 10 ปีที่แล้ว +87

    He pretty much sums it up in one statement: "We are not meant to enforce morality". We are meant to protect people against other people who want to cause the former harm.
    No objective morals exist by definition and United States and Canada are secular societies whose duty it is to protect their citizens from duress and harassment, - terms which can be defined legally from the secular morality perspective based on common well-being.
    It is not their job to brand drug use as an immoral activity or be the judge over which type of drug use is considered socially acceptable and which is punishable by a prison term. This is basically trying to impose one's own subjective cultural view of morality on other cultures, - something which should be unacceptable in a secular society, especially one which pretends to be a multicultural one.

    • @chilidili
      @chilidili 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I agree with him on basically everything, but I feel as though this isn't as much about morality. My favorite political theorists talk about "positive freedom", which is eventually promoting the best of oneself for each individual citizen, so I don't think I would agree with him in that manner.

    • @TheHallucinati
      @TheHallucinati 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** LOL well, at least they like to claim it as secular society so I want to make sure that we live up to this claim in best way I can.
      It's grim, yes the situation is VERY grim, I think few realize just HOW bad it is. We are on a fast track course to our own extinction as species...
      But never hopeless, even if its fool's hope ....
      Main problem is our collective myopia - failure to see the writing on the wall which has little but Ars Moriendi written on it. It's actually called Disaster Myopia in Psychology.
      But now we know how to circumvent our cognitive biases both individual and organizational - something which was hitherto completely unknown...

    • @gothiccookies
      @gothiccookies 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Decriminalised, not the same as legal: "The new law maintained the status of illegality for using or possessing any drug for personal use without authorization. However, the offense was changed from a criminal one, with prison a possible punishment, to an administrative one if the amount possessed was no more than ten days' supply of that substance."

      False. Portugal decriminilized drugs. While it is obviously a step in the right direction, it is only a very small step.
      Portugrse plice are wasting their time going after drug dealers, the drugs are unsafe, the business is controlled by criminals. The only benefit is that small time users can get a fine instead of a jail sentence. Which is gteat, dont get me wrong, but dont confuse it with what is actually needed which is legalization. Heroin should be as easy to buy for an adult as coffee.

      Nope. He did a lot of things wrong.
      The murder rate during prohibition for starters. He gave no argumentation for why the murder rate was intrinsically tied to prohibition and the numbers he gave were cherry picked to ignore the explosion of the homicide rate over a decade and a half before prohibition began and he ignored that fact that the rate of increase slowed and began to declining during prohibition.
      He advocates loosening laws and uses a very faulty analogy for illegal drugs comparing them to cigarettes and the declining smoking rates while ignoring the fact that laws and regulations on smoking have increased rapidly in the past few decades.

      And you can prove this? What is his "actual" argument then?

    • @TheGamblingApocalyps
      @TheGamblingApocalyps 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      His actual argument, if you were paying attention, was that the war on drugs is a complete failure and waste of resources.
      It has accomplished the exact opposite of what it intended to do. The war on drugs sought to take drugs off the streets and since its inception, drugs have never been cheaper or more potent/readily available. Heroin is over 400 times cheaper than it was before the war on drugs and it's easier to get than alcohol since dealers aren't checking for ID.
      People don't abstain from drugs because they can't get them. Nobody is not doing drugs because they don't have access to them. You can easily get drugs in PRISON of all places, and those are maximum security installations. If you can't keep drugs out of something that small and controlled, then there's zero chance of keeping it off the streets.

    Reasons why I believe all drugs should be legalized:
    1) Freedom of choice, every person should be able to choose what they put into their bodies. This is public policy issue.
    2) Danger with even the most dangerous of drugs typically has more to do with purity and dosages which can be better controlled in regulated markets. This is pharmaceutical issue.
    3) Non-commercial markets encourage the lack of reporting help to underfund gun violence, burglaries, gang activity, and violent crime. This is an economics and criminality issue.
    4) Illegality creates and encourages a public perception about drug users that never before existed. They lose jobs and are publicly ostracized for something humans have done for thousands of years. They are often cherry picked vices looked at unfairly and not given chances. This is an interpersonal psychology issue.
    5) The study of these drugs and their affects will change. Our understanding of psychology will change as we gain new technologies to better see their affects. Illegality creates barriers to research. This is science and research issue.
    6) They can make you feel good. This is an underrated interpersonal psychology issue.
    7) Young people should be educated about how to control and moderate the joy happiness they feel in their lives instead they are taught to just say no, which in some cases can be a downright impossibility. This is similar to the sex education arguments which say to educate and teach birth control over abstinence only. It may be necessary to explain to people when they should focus more on saving money than spending it. Developing better value practices is a part of growing up and substance users face unrelenting charges of skewed values that cigarette smokers, alcohol drinkers, and even other much more expensive risky pastimes can be associated with. This is an education issue.
    8) There is historical culture of substance use which is traced back to most ancient civilization that will be extinct unless properly preserved. This is a historical issue.
    9) Drug illegality is the primary leverage against minorities and nonwhite communities, also, more general speaking communities of poverty and lower middle class. These sub-groups are unfairly targeted and ostracized for the habits of a larger socioeconomic class. This is a community, racial issue
    10) Recovery and Treatment options for substance users and abusers are currently, for the most part reserved for individuals with the resources and support structure that is not availible to many poor and underpriveledged neighborhoods and people. Reasearch has shown that these 'harm reduction" based appraches are cheaper on a state and easier/better for a populace than more putative approaches like jail. Drug user should have opportunity for employment and standard of living same as anyone else. This is a treatment and community concern issue.

      @rs72098 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CaptainHowdy187 I'm refuting every point.
      1)Freedom of choice, but you're not free of consequences. People drive on the same road as drug users and can be killed by users who are high. This is why there are DUI laws. What you put in your body can effect other people.
      2)Not exactly sure what you're stating here, it sounds like you endorse the current pharmaceutical system. The pharmaceutical system already regulates and taxes drugs, they have deemed crack cocaine, meth, heroin as dangerous and not suitable to sell and make profit off of consumption. The same reason you can't sell knives as toys for children, it's basic common sense.
      3) I agree, but this is the argument to be against drugs. You also admit that this IS a criminal issue, which should be brought to criminal courts.
      4) Drug users are rarely ostracized, but they can be filtered out of jobs because operating machinery or driving a bus while using drugs or alcohol is dangerous. Thousands of years? Well there was slavery for thousands of years that doesn't mean we should condone it. Crack cocaine, meth and heroin in their current forms have only been used in the past 80 years or so. Native Americans didn't have the technology to create crack cocaine out of the coca leaf. Again though, it's besides the point, this isn't an argument, it's just a statement.
      5) science has shown that cocaine is dangerous and hazardous to your health. Pharmacies can't sit around and wait for some great "scientific understanding" to come around to somehow support legalization. When people are dying, government has to respond. Scientists already know the basic makeup of molecules of cocaine, how exactly is new research going to break it down any further?

      Sadly, there are no uprisings. That's the sad part. And, when we question our governments we get killed or arrested.
      *"No good deed goes unpunished." - Billy Wilder*
      The CIA officer *John Kiriakou,* which was the whistleblower on the likes of Gina Haspel and Jose Rodriguez, *was the only one arrested* for the illegal treatment (Torture) of detainees in Thailand, prosecuted for being terrorist. Even the illegal action of erasing the evidence of the interrogations on the alleged 92 recordings did not warrant the arrest of the CIA operatives involved.
      *Gary Webb,* tried to expose a tie between the government and cartels selling illegal drugs. Unfortunately, as reported, Webb was determine to commit *suicide,* as he had shot himself twice in the head. 🤔💭...
      *Aaron Swartz,* questioned the attack he saw on the first amendment, and the laws that basically said: _"You are to uphold to every law, even if you aren't legally able to see every law, there is no excuses."_ Unfortunately, he committed *suicide* too. This guy did everything Edward Snowden did, and more on the outside of the government.
      Y'see, we are told to believe that our government will _serve and protect us,_ but as we come to our own beliefs, we find out that trying to do what is best for us is prohibited. *Most sit in fear, unwilling to compromise for change, because of.*

    Yeah, this was really thought out and insightful. If I may add, most if not all drug charges carry felonies like he said. So many people have no idea of the limitations that puts on one's life. They can't vote, get a good job or education, and it marks them as a horrible person. Felony charges should be reserved for violent crimes.

      Very true. A very staggering amount of people rely on authority figures to give their opinions to them, and cannot discern truth from falsehood based on the merits of the argument, rather than the credentials of the messenger. I think we all do it a little, but to what degree is determined by intelligence, wisdom, education, and the desire to eliminate logical fallacy from thought.

    I have alot of respect for this ex-cop. All too often I have seen police officers simply assume that all drugs are bad and turn everyone who takes them into thieving addicted miscreants when this is not 100% true, and suddenly have a vendetta against someone because they like to indulge every now and then. I understand it is their job to uphold the law but some do it in a fashion is more akin to oppressing the public than protecting them.
    On a side note: That female news reporter is so bloody annoying when she keeps butting in her stupid unimportant remarks over the officer.

    His basic premise is that we need to legalize drugs, but if you're skeptical, just give him a few minutes to convince you.
    Highlights include a very honest answer to a commonly asked drug question at 0:54 , the easiest question to answer about the War on Drugs at 4:48 , the complete destruction of the biggest argument anti-drug advocates use at 7:23 , using the Bible to prove the ineffectiveness of prohibition at 13:55 , and a rapid-fire debunking of several myths all in one breath at 14:20 . If you have to leave right now, just skip to 5:58 for the thesis statement in a single sentence.

    Legalize all drugs and do a better of keeping them out of the country, once they're in the country it is too late and people are goin to do it. Also we have clearly defined addiction is a disease, yet we throw people in jail, that would be like getting cancer and being thrown in jail.

    • @terrycrevison382

      I think your wrong when you say the lumber companies are afraid of hemp. Because hemp isn't used for wood hemp is a fiber used for the making of rope. as a matter of fact the Navy has been using hemp rope for ever. and did you know that Henry Ford actually built and entire car using only marijuana hemp. Go to Scientific Research and real facts about the Cannabinoids in Cannabis, you should find the hemp car towards the end. But you will most likely want to watch the entire film, It's a very good documentary film on the history of Marijuana, Medical Marijuana, and hemp that at one time in U.S. history was one of the largest crops grown in the States.

    • @wrathofme03

      Terry Crevison hemp isn't used for wood but lumber thrives because of uses like making paper...which you could do with hemp.

      thank*reason Right now they are building homes that can last 300 years using hemp Crete that is lighter and stronger than steel There are thousands of things you can do with hemp, There is a brand new car that just hit the market made completely with Marijuana hemp. Henry Ford also built a car entirely out of hemp and fueled the cars engine with hemp oil, the first diesel ever built was also fueled with hemp oil. The constitution was written on paper made from hemp. And it's completely safe, with no ill affects to our environment, I could go no and no there are so many very good use's for this magnificent plant, Plus all of it's medical use's.
