City of Oakland Shuts Down "The Village" Homeless Camp | KQED News

  • Just a day after the city’s annual homeless count, Oakland police stepped in and took apart a homeless encampment that had been built by local volunteers. Tiny houses had been constructed from plywood to offer shelter to about 16 people. Those who helped construct it considered it a sort of housing workaround, since there isn’t enough alternative housing in the city for all the homeless in need.

I am a business owner in Oakland. These people in this clip are extraordinary. There is an enormous amount of money coming to Oakland from our city and outside of it to help the homeless situation. It is not being used For the homeless. I don’t know where it’s going, but it’s not going where we wanted it to go. Who is stealing the money.

There’s a lot of undeveloped land in the Bay Area, counties such as Marin has exempted themselves from having enough affordable housing. Oakland and SF should pay poorer cities such as Vallejo to build rehabilitation encampments. A lot of the former military bases are still undeveloped.

I had to leave Oakland last year. First San Francisco rents went up and people moved to Oakland, Then Oakla d became overcrowded, then Hayward, all the way down to San Jose. People can't afford housing here.I think a universal minimum income would not improve the judgment of the mentally and drug addicted.

One of the central problems here is that the homeless are using land meant for other things - sidewalks, bike trails, etc. And they are using land that is not theirs. What they need, among other things, is actual ownership of the property on which they camp, and for that property to be properly zoned for that kind of activity.

    • @Torrider5
      @Torrider5 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The land isn't owned by the homeless, same as if the homeless decided to build on your front lawn. They got into their situation and now have to figure out how to get out. I'm talking from experience being I was homeless for 3 years in San Jose and going by the law, got a job, went into a homeless non-profit shelter and got free, eventually left the USA and have a great life now in Thailand!

I miss my native city of Oakland but with no resources I’ve had to move to SoCal where housing is first off available and second slightly cheaper. I had a hard transition and ended up stripping the first year. Now, a guy has paid for my cna license and I’m working at hospital by day and Bartending at night. I hope to save money to support myself while I complete an RN program. I don’t have to dance now but I’m sad about that part in my life. I know I’m bless though because at least I’m making it. I know many people who’s options are even slimmer. I’m not sure what the options are but I’m trying desperately to but my freedom so I can go back and help others obtain theirs. It’s cold out here but god is good. Be good to yourself and others 💯❤️

The Grove Shafter Park is directly behind my house. Our backyard fence meets the park grass. Over the past four years myself and about 15- 35 neighbors have ctrated a community through our dogs. Believe it or not Oakland is a city of dog lovers. I've met a lot of my neighbors and their dogs through that park. We all look for we add to new puppies and mourn for the loss of our neighbors pet as well. This little community of ours is something we've built up. Through making relationships and letting our dogs become friends. Honestly without this park nom of us would know each others names. Do u know how wonderful it is to be able toplay with my dog and my catch up with neighbors after work? Not only do I feel safe, we all feel welcome amongst each other. Yeah there's that annoying dog that always jumps on me or that owner that never teaches jos dog to stop stealing everyone's. Ball... But whatever. Admittedly my dog introduces herself by handing every new comer a muddy slobbery Frisbee.
That encampment, The village, built their community in the middle of the field. They put down wood chips which are terrible for dog paws. They locked off the gates so I couldn't walk my dog at night. They said it was for their communitys safety so they wouldn't be looted. But that gate is publlic. Being locked out of my dog park, where I feel safe amongst my
community isn't final at all. I tried to explain to Anita Bee that if her argument was that "No one was using this park land. This land is everyone's land...", At least that what she said all over the news. Thay was the whole argument right? We don't need the city recources to settle into a peaceful community. That this was a suitable temporary housing solution overall... Yet
This encampment would encourage residents to contribute to the land and surrounding residents. Well let me tell you, they never planted an herb garden like they said. It was late January early February when tehy settled in. It was the dead of winter.. what was going to grow??? They ruined the field where they built houses and put down bark. They had no trash or bathrooms so there were rats everywhere. Drug activity, dumping, and tagging quadrupled. Worst of all... honestly I couldn't walk through the park with my dog because with was now surrounded by homeless males I didn't know. Everyone within our little dog community was chased out. No one could play on the field with their dogs after the community settled in. I tried expressing that it was unfair to lock up the park. Maybe I could have a spare key?? Dometjing?? Made it clear That I supported what they were doing as long as Anita was willing to recognize we ALL had to assimilate as a community.... She didn't care about assimilating. When I see these peaceful communal videos it makes me sick. All they did was disrupt what was already anawesome dog park. Drink, use drugs, ruin the landscape( which the city has yet to fix due to funding issues aka woidbsrk is everywhere), steal public water, leave trash virtually everywhere. Maybe the problem is that they ruin everywhere they go. I'm poor, my neighbors are all broke, but we fight for what we have. Our dog park was something everyone built as community over time. Years of watching puppies grow up, Jobs, picking up dog poop in the rain! Lots of muddy paws!
Nobody handed that neighbourly bond over. We became a community because we earned it...

Angel Blue I do understand that it is a MAJOR problem in cities like this to have homeless everywhere BUT these people have either suffered a great loss or are drug addicts. We still have to remember that they are people and should probably get either a dedicated piece of land off the city or make a Homeless shelter for this problem. I understand where you are coming from that it is a hazard to have these type of "buildings" in a PUBLIC park. I respect your sole opinion and I truly hope that I have gotten my point across. It is just that she stated her concern like a spolied child that didnt want her puppy to get hurt. On that note I rest my case.

I don't feel sorry for these losers!!! They make up this fake story of their life wanting people to feel sorry for them!!! It's their fault that they don't want to make their life's successful and they choose drugs, drinking, be lazy not looking for a job!!! They are brainwashed in their own world thinking jobs and money is supposed to come to them!!! Let these bums suffer!!! They are a waste of life and they are useless to this world!!! This would be the perfect reason for FEMA camps!!!

  • @nothingfree3524

these people can do construction hmmm building a wall requires construction, create jobs like rehabilitating the city by cleaning it , painting bridges, planting trees, maintaining school grounds, sweeping sidewalks, mowing city lawns, cleaning city dump sites, cleaning highways, cleaning alleys, repairing fences, jobs taking care of sheltered pets, cleaning grounds around private companies, these people need jobs to get back on their feet , the ones with substance abuse lock them up and rehabilitate them till their clean then put them to work. These people can be productive citizens but the educated that can't do their job but have THEIR hands out to get the millions of tax dollars are going to keep milking it and live well while this problem escalates at the exspense of the tax payer and the people that hit bottom. This is a good example of very poor city management and it starts at the top of incompetant city goverment.

Displacing more homeless people "warms your heart"? You need Jesus. If you died tonight, you think you'd go to Heaven? NO ONE is promised tomorrow.. Better seek Jesus and get saved, because time is already short and hating others isn't helping you at all.

You do not have the right to build housing on public land. I realize that the area needs more housing. Maybe s ok me people need to realize that they are in a city not ready for them to live there in their current condition

So, people came onto property that they did not own and told other people to come and live there. No facilities or utilities were provided. No city permission was sought. And now, the ramshackle mess is being hauled away.

This is very sad and people need to stop screaming and yapping about drug use. We dont know what these people have been through and just maybe being homeless and on the streets turned them onto the drugs. Humanity has got to do better. We are the animals of the planet because what we call animals many of us act worse than.
