Another great Kinks song from 1964 - "All Day and All of the Night". That was the very first 45 record I bought....crap I'm old! This was the first song played in the film Pirate Radio/The Boat that Rocked.....great film. Saw them in Toronto in the 70's - loved it.

This was ‘64! A few critical and influential years - ahead of Zeppelin, ahead of The Stooges. They had a new sound.
Curses! I wanted to tell you how he got his distortion, lol! Should have known you’d read it. After that, people started modding their amp circuitry, trying to capture the same sound. Specialty guitar “boutiques” would solder in a few different resistors and capacitors to overdrive the pre-amp stage. Different shops had custom mods that they tried to keep secret. Next step, was to put similar, modded pre-amp circuitry in a little box and sell the sound in a stomp box. After that, the industry caught on, and we had the pedal and effect explosion. Custom-built amps have made a resurgence in the last 20 years or so. Cheers!

Sunny Afternoon is one of The Kinks tunes that's stuck in my head and I can't help but sing. It is such a fun song.
Now, as much as I enjoy the Kinks, Ray Davies didn't invent or discover fuzzy distortion. That credit goes to Link Wray who poked about five holes in the speaker of his amplifier for his instrumental song "Rumble" back in the 1950s. It was the only instrumental piece that was banned from radio play because censors associated the title "Rumble" with gang violence. Yet when you hear it, it is Link Wray's guitar that is rumbling. Many elite guitarists will claim to be inspired by Link Wray. He is Shawnee First Nation and started his career with the greaser style. Slicked back hair and biker type leather jackets and boots. He didn't sing much because while serving in the Korean war he contracted tuberculosis and lost a lung. He was known for instrumental rock, surf rock, rock & roll and rockabilly. He was ahead of his time in his ability to manipulate chords and fret work.

Hey ya gotta love that British accent: "ya realeh got meh!"
Lovein that guitar tone. Sounds like a Fender Stratocaster and sounds like a tube amplifier, but doesn't sound like a Marshall. Not sure.
You're right The Kinks were an influencial band; as they say the Americans invented Rock n Roll but the British perfected it. I think it's true IMO.

They had the quintessential garage band sound. Lola is a great song by them....now that was an influential song. BBC refused to play it because they used “coke” in it, for Coke the drink not the drug. They wouldn’t play any song that could be construed as an ad for any product. Ray Davies went back into the studio to record a one word change to the song...The BBC apparently was not upset by the, obvious, sexual innuendo in the song. Ahhhh the times we lived in!!!

All right. You are going way back in time here.
I was listening to a song this morning (Who's Loving You), released way back in 1960, written by Smokey Robinson . It was a hit, from his Motown-based group, The Miracles. Then Michael Jackson/The Jackson 5's version came out years later and made people believe it was originally their song, and Smokey said he had to stop performing it, due to the frustration he felt when people made inaccurate remarks about his "version". This all led me to listen again to Smokey singing an old favorite, Tears of a Clown, and I got to reading about it, because I wasn't sure what the wind instrument was. It's a Bassoon! In Pop music! And I also learned that it is one of two pop songs that mention the character in an Opera, named Pagliacci, and not coincidentally, Smokey Robinson wrote both songs. And if you ever hear this song, Tears of a Clown, and read about it, look up the story of who brought the music to Smokey. (He did so because that artist was stuck, unable to put lyrics to the music.) btw, Smokey Robinson's falsetto is still amazing. The show Daryl's House (Youtue) had him on. I hope Smokey is as rich as Daryl Hall (

As noted, this song is foundational for all Rock to follow. It is ground-zero for both Metal and Punk, fundamentally altered the way guitars and amplifiers are designed and built, and created the entire signal-processor industry. And it took less than two-and-a-half minutes to do it all.
There's a sort of trilogy of Kinks songs that are essentially the Big Bang: "You Really Got Me", "All Day And All Of The Night", and "Till The End Of The Day" - all of which clock in at under two-and-a-half minutes. This was standard for Pop singles at the time, because, like the fuzzbox, complex, experimental Rock music (and the FM stations that could play it) also hadn't been invented yet.
I think the only other songs that could rival this as far as influence would be "Hound Dog" and "Johnny B. Goode" (although you could make a case for "Great Balls Of Fire", "Good Golly, Miss Molly" and "She Loves You"). It's that important. You've just found the source of the Nile.

This was very early British invasion. Same time as the Beatles and the Stones. Ray Davies wrote it on the family piano. Another like it is "All Day and All of the Night" which they played as a medley with "You Really Go Me" in concert. His brother Dave is the lead guitarist. Van Halen's cover is as also great.

I really enjoyed listening to you read about the background of the song and how the Davies brothers accidentally (fortuitously) creating THE sound of modern rock and roll by kicking and slashing their equipment. Not sure what beat that, the yawn or kitty wanting attention...

Cool! SUCH an iconic inspirational tune! many will argue whether Van Halen's cover is better or not. To me, they are different, but the same...if that makes sense. This song is actually OLDER than I am LMAO!! Despite their success, Ray and Dave had a falling out and were at odds for quite a long time. WOW, song facts with the major contribution on this one! KITTEH!!! Kitteh KAYAT!! Great reaction, thanks!

I tend to only like several songs by most sixties bands including the likes of The Who and Moody Blues... The Stones I tend to prefer the first three years ...The Kinks for me are the best next to The Beatles... Ray Davies hands down one of the best lyricists the UK has produced... More Kinks...

"You Really Got Me" is a departure from what was current at the time- 1964. What made me laugh was later when Van Halen covered the song a new generation of people discovered the Kinks who are yet another deep rabbit hole that begs for exploration.

Some have called the Kinks' sound "Power Pop" or "British Invasion" or "Proto-Punk" I call it "surly in-your-face-take-no-prisoners Rock N Roll -- SONIC!" "All Day and All of The Night" (The Kinks) "Til The End of The Day" (The Kinks) -- what I danced to (a long time ago). The early Who and The Kinks got me interested in starting a band.

Some firsts here: first mainstream solo, first hard rock single.... 1964. Both statements debatable, but The Beatles were still holding our hands, or at least wanting to.

I was raised on a lot of late 50s, early 60s UK music, and some, like the Kinks I found myself.
This has for me one of the best rifs going, "When You Walk In The Room," by The Searchers.
If you're into guitars, you Have to give The Shadows a try. They're a UK instrumental group, that started in 1958, as a back group to Cliff Richard. In 1960, they released a track that was later covered by an American guitarist, and that version was then sampled for the song "Jump on it". But the original song Apache, was first released by the Shadows, and having seen the group play this, and other great tracks like FBI, Wonderful Land, Kon tiki, Peace Pipe, Frightened City, Man of Mystery, Foottapper, The Savage, Geronimo and The Theme For Young Lovers, and many many more, live, I might be a bit biased. But they used to cover famous songs, but also write their own music too, like Mountains of The Moon.
They play a mix of soft songs, and others with a faster, or heavier beat.
The lead guitarist, Hank Marvin, inspired both Mark Knopfler, of Dire Straights, and Eric Clapton.

This is a band that you can really sink into. Loads of great stuff. Genre mixers and genre busters. Ray davies should be mentioned among the all time greats yet sadly this song is normally only a footnote in music history. "Picture book", "lola", "apeman" and "father Christmas" show off a more humorous side of the band. But theres so much more awaiting you if you choose to explore them.
