  • A short demonstration of basic and classical aikido techniques demonstrated by members of Chicago Aikikai. Featuring Martha Turner (Chief Instructor and Dojo cho), instructor Andrew Vitale, Qin Zheng and Adam Cauchi. Shot and edited by Rob Brose.
Most Americans probably know aikido from the bone-crunching cinematic exploits of Steven Seagal, which coincidentally kicked off in Chicago with 1988’s “Above the Law”. However, most aikido training is as seen here: non-competitive practice based on harmonizing with an opponent’s actions; akin to Chinese Tai Chi, but with throws, locks and pins similar to jujitsu and judo. While individual students and teachers do explore its self-defense applications, its primary goal is moving freely with a calm mind and relaxed body.
