Yea, I actually had tears in my eyes. And those two were both from San Diego basically. It's like Williams passed the torch to Gwynn so to speak. Gwynn playing for the "Padres" and Ted Williams whose mother is Mexican/Spanish. I mean you can't make this stuff up.
I was in the middle of How I met your mother when I got this notification. A video about the greatest player in MLB history comes first. How I met your mother can wait. Cheers 🍻
Yeah, Joe got propped up by the media!! He was great, no doubt. But, He isn’t on Teddy ballgames level. I’m sorry, but look what Ted did while fighting in the war. Joe has at least 2 of Teds mvps
There goes the greatest hitter to ever play the game. The Splendid Splinter embodies everything great about the America he lived in. Sacrifice, skill, humility, class, and pride in ones country above all else. God bless Teddy Ballgame.
I am a long time Padres fan. I consider myself fortunate that in 2007 I was at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony for Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken Jr. Both were class acts - great players on the field and great people off the field as well. I have the highest respect for Cal and wish he could have played for my Padres.
@@thegoldentroll I mean that you misspelled the words: 1) funally (should be FINALLY) 2) doung (should be YOUNG) 3) Todd (should be TED) Got it now?
Hey cam Thanks for doing a vid on my fav player ever! One thing I noticed: you didn’t say at any point in the vid in _____ in such and such year Ted Williams took his game TO THE NEXT LEVEL.” That’s my favorite part of your vids lol
He probably should have won 7 MVP awards, and had he not missed nearly 5 seasons, he would have deserved even more, around 10 even. The years he should have won were 1941, 1942, 1947, 1951, 1954, and most likely would have deserved all three from 1943-1945. He’s my favorite player of all-time.
The media may not have always been as awful as it is now, but even back then Ted correctly understood their value and taught us all how to deal with them. It's just a shame that this most important lesson was lost on so many.
Tony Gwynn Sr. before Tony Gwynn ever Tony Gwynn'd. You ever hear Maddux talk about his hatred of Gwynn? That's how I imagine old school pitchers talked about Teddy here.
If you wouldn't mind please tell me where you found that information, because on the official baseball Hall of Fame website they have it listed at 20/10 in this article: baseballhall.org/discover/inside-pitch/ted-williams-crash-lands-in-Korea#:~:text=He%20trained%20as%20an%20aviator,commission%20on%20May%202%2C%201944.
He's certainly the most decorated Hall of Fame baseball player, militarily speaking. As a hitter, only Ty Cobb, Joe Jackson, Josh Gibson, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays are in the same conversation.
Yea Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Spahn, and Stan Musial should have been regarded as national treasures. That is what Brazil did with the soccer player Pele.' Brazil didn't allow him to play for football clubs in Europe. Likewise, I wish they didn't miss time due to war. Their statistics would even be greater. Ted never had 200 hits in a season, because they walked him so much (little protection, except for the few years with Foxx). Yea they were trying to get Joe DiMaggio to play with his brother Dom on the Red Sox. How about Warren Spahn (dude was legendary even in his forties)!!
Yo com'on Teddy Ballgame " there goes the greatest hitter that ever lived" that's fuckin nuts ... and you fuckin know he heard that on the street. Damn that must've felt amazing
The narrator left out an important detail in referencing Ted's 1954 season. 2 rule changes came about as a result: 1) As mentioned, Ted had the highest batting average in the A.L. that year but didn't get credit for the batting title because he was 14 at bats shy of the required amount of at bats to qualify. At that time the requirement was for a player to reach at least 400 at bats to qualify. They understood that a player should be an everyday regular player to qualify, I mean you don't award a batting title to some guy who went 10 for 20 during the year. Yes he batted .500 but it's way too small a sample size. So it needs to be a regular starting player. What they hadn't considered was someone like Ted who walked way more than anyone else in the league. Yes Ted had fewer than 400 at bats but he had well over 500 plate appearances because of the walks. He clearly was a regular everyday player. So eventually they changed the rule to what it is now, where it is based on plate appearances instead of at bats. Ted caused that change. 2) Another rule change that came out of that was something that wound up helping Tony Gwynn get a batting title in 1996. The rules now state that you can be short of the plate appearances requirement and still qualify only if the following is true - if the difference between a batter's number of plate appearances and the required number is such that even if the batter had gotten those missing at bats - and made outs in all of them - if his adjusted average still would have been the highest in the league then he wins the title. This also applies to leading in on base % and slugging %. In 1996 Gwynn was short of the required plate appearances but his average was so much higher than anyone else that even his "adjusted" average was the highest in the league.
I appreciate the info, but in the video I did mention he fell 14 at-bats short of qualifying for the batting title. I didn't go into detail about the rule change that year but I also don't mention every single thing I find in my research. Thank you for the feedback!

The stat was stating after Ted in 1949 only Bagwell has done it since then. Ronald Acuña was the closest at 149 outside of Jeff. And A-Rod did not score 150, 143 was his career high
