only destiel its more beneficial for the overall movement for a huge group of people to be conscious and trying towards low waste, while perhaps imperfect; rather than one single person being a perfectly zero waste individual. change happens when the masses open their hearts and minds
@only destiel a few doing it perfectly doesn't change anything . Now imagine what if instead of 1 person being completely zero waste , we had 100 that just stopped using plastic grocery backs or straws ,but completely. Small changes by more people is what we need if we want to achieve something.
How can you fail something that doesn't exist yet!? Zero waste is not about individuals, it is more about the industrial sector. So, your quote is rather dumb. Insividuals can't fail that.
@@Αφροδιτη-ψ9ο You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Industries make up 70% of contamination in the world. We are too far gone to concentrate on small efforts.
Blaming individual consumers for tiny things is such a... Wasteful way to direct anger. Focus on the big companies and entire industries overall y'all...
@Destiny wix true, that's one way of combatting it by "voting with your money", but I think it's also important to put pressure on public officials to introduce regulations that will prevent companies from being so wasteful, to create a more circular economy. There's only so much we as individual consumers can do to pressure multimillion dollar industries. At the end of the day, laws and regulations would hold a lot more sway.
Low waste can be a lot of fun, finding ways to do stuff differently, learning a lot, feeling way more incontrol . . . but as always once it becomes radical it does more harm than good. There is no way to avoid everything that does harm and dependend on ones subjectiv circumstances what changes are managable differs greatly. I have no problem when it comes to replace or just not use cosmetica and cleaners. I have fun making stuff myself, make soap from ash and buy and wear almost exclusivly second hand or self made cloths. But going vegan is out of question for my food intolerances would not alowe me to get enough zinc and protein from plants for example. I could cut meat, but that would cost me my health, so I am not willing to do that. I buy (organ)meat and cuts that would otherwise be throwen away, organic and all and only as much as I absolutly need, but thats the best I can do. Avoiding lots of plastic packaging is easy for me, fastfood, snacks and their like, there is almost always an ingredient in it, I can not handle. Someone else might not have the time and patience to make everything themselfs, but are healthy in a way that allowes them to go vegan and compleatly regional. Both approaches do a lot of good compared to the mayority, that is a lot less considerate and more wasteful. Encourageing people to do their best is way more helpful than makeing ourselfs and others miserable.
It also kinda ruined my life. I stopped taking care of myself properly because I was trying to be zero waste. I still do everything I can, but being 100% zero waste is not sustainable. I’ve gotta eat and bathe and wear clothes. This can’t all be on the consumer. We live in a society.
This was my fear, I'm terribly picky with food and unfortunately I can't just do a major switch in diet. I have a terrible mental reaction to it. So I've decided to work on that part of myself last, after I've figured out the rest of my life. Working in one space that is most detached from me (laundry) and progressively getting more attached. In this way I won't worry on sacrificing my health because I will have plenty of time to think about what I can do when I get to that point
We live in a society!! Indeed. We are entitled to be supported. We shouldn't need to fantasize about moving off-grid in the wilderness self-sufficiently. We need each other and we have the right to expect our community to work together.
Completely agree that the zero waste movement has moved to look into a way where “a $60 metal lunchbox is zero waste or not at all). Where are all my Asian friends? My parents don’t know anything about the zero waste movement but they reuse their jars and cookie tins to store stuff, reusing their plastic bags and takeaway containers until they’re completely broken and burying their food scraps into their produce garden.
Your comment reminded me of a tweet I read that said a thing isn't a Sustainable™ or Green™ choice until white americans choose to do it. Like reusing jars and biking etc
Yes! Totally agree - I definitely fell for the "gotta buy the bamboo/metal alternatives" when I first started learning about this a couple years ago, but realized how counterintuitive it was.. and learning more about intersectional environmentalism has led me to realize that so much of what our parents/grandparents do ARE what we are trying to strive for now! Using egg shells as fertilizer, tangerine peels to freshen up the restroom, home grown aloe as hair gel, ripping napkins/paper towels into 4 pieces because their culture/life experiences have taught them to value being resourceful : )
Mexicans too. We reuse everything. And when you buy mole at the store it comes in this glass. So we clean it, take the label out and use it as glasses hahaha.
I've heard the term "low-waste lifestyle" which I feel is more accurate. The term "zero waste" sets an improbable standard and encourages a lot of the gatekeeping that prevents people from attempting to make a change in the first place because they feel they will never be able to do it perfectly enough to prevent this kind of criticism. Similar to the way "plant-based" is becoming an option for people who want to consciously limit their use of animal products without committing to a fully vegan lifestyle. I understand that some people who are zero waste/vegan don't agree with the morality of not doing it all the way, but it's also not fair to expect everyone to have the same exact morals, and I think someone doing what they can half of the time is better than doing nothing at all. (Also, when it comes to environmental effects, it is amazing for people to be doing their part not to contribute to systems that are destroying the environment, but we also have to remember that 70% of carbon emissions come from only 100 companies. So having one shampoo bottle in your shower probably isn't going to make or break the earth.)
I understand people who have “moral” problems with people not going vegan/zero waste all the way... but it’s just irrealistic. It’s a deep misunderstanding of how our society works.
It bothers me that it puts blame on the consumer if they don't adhere to "zero waste" because even one slip up ruins it, apparently. For example, I got a safety razor so I could stop using disposable ones, but I needed rubbing alcohol to keep it from rusting and the only thing I could find was in a plastic bottle. One thing outweighs the other and I don't think that should be something to feel guilty about. It's all a grey area and ultimately the fault lies with a company's choice in manufacturing, not any single person.
Getting involved can help! When I lived in Memphis many local restaurants composted. The farmers markets take food stamps and match food stamps up to $10 for fresh fruits and veg free. This is becoming more of a thing. It takes community efforts. But there is enough of us. But please remember the disabled community and involve them while crafting policies
Great video Christie. I gave up on zero waste myself, did it for few years and only had an empty bank account, high stress levels and ruined teeth to show for it. Ruined teeth courtesy of home made toothpaste, I don't know what the heck was I thinking! I got sick of the elitism, hypocrisy, shaming and bitchiness that's rampant in the zero waste community so when I was told by few people to give up taking my medication just to save on few pieces of plastic I distanced myself from it. I still do my own thing, even more than I did back then but I don't put a label on my life anymore.
What toothpaste do you suggest then? I think I am starting to have teeth issues. Idk if my zero waste toothpaste is contributing to that or not. I have been using Bite toothpaste tablets and David's natural toothpaste.
@@hippybecca I would suggest you have a good conversation with your dentist. I interviewed a dental hygienist on my channel (but it's in French) because although I am trying to be as zero waste as possible, I also want to stand by science...natural does not always equal better, and teeth are part of your health! The dental hygienist that I interviewed seemed to suggest that the best zw options on the market are probably some of the toothpastes that come in aluminum tubes. But, as I said, talk to your dentist and if he says that regular Crest or Colgate toothpaste is what is best for you then consider it as medical waste and stop beating yourself up about it!
@@hippybecca definitely don't give up fluoride. It is very important to teeth health. There are zero waste toothpastes that have fluoride, but most don't
@@vvlon What's your opinion on chewtabs? Instead of flouride they have a different ingredient that is supposed to be better than flouride. They use it on broken bones and stuff like that.
I actually was just told about this recently that allot of the zero waste toothpaste have allot of bicarbonate soda which is not good to be brushing with daily and I never knew this 🤷🏻♀️ would love to know what other people recommend ??
My eco anxiety has been so bad for so long, and it’s definitely exasperated by the feelings of personal responsibility and failure for the items that are purchased for my household I don’t even get a say in. I think a refocus away from perfection on the individual level would be of great benefit to all of us.
I suggest you research capitalism and how industry works in our society. It’s just pointless to focus on individual choices. I mean, yes, choose what is best for you, but don’t loose time worrying about the impact of individual choices.
Zero waste is almost literally impossible. Everyone just has to be conscious of their actions and try their best. It's the large corporations that we need to keep in check for their wastefulness.
You talked about using oils, so here is the fact - oil isn't a moisturizer. It's a common mistake on yt. Oil can work as a sealant. If you want to use oil on your skin you should for example use hyaluronic acid before that. The same for hair - they cannot replace a good conditioner. Oil are great as a moisture barrier, they reduce water loss but they don't moisturize!
So true. Please always use water and then seal with oil. Oil directly on skin w/o water can ultimately make you dry since it's blocking moisture entering.
@@Kayraine water is the only true “moisturizer” so using an oil on wet skin straight out the shower is a great way to condition the skin. Any thing else that claims to moisturize more intensely just adds in extra ingredients like HA, which holds water in the skin, petroleum or Shea butter which also seal in water or things like ceramides and special ingredients that may improve the skin and skin barrier, but ultimately water is the only way to add MOISTURE to the skin. Idk about you but a kind of light bulb flicked on when I learned this information. Same goes for hair.
@Nobody Knows it becomes a moisturizer when you use oil afterwards. Actually i think the most basic moisturizers are just water and oil held together as an emulsion, but i’ll go and double check Edit: 31 minutes later and all i’ve learned is that yes...you can make a moisturizer from just oil and water, but you also need other stuff to keep them _together_ (like ewax) and you can’t just use any oil for the cream/lotion/whatever you’re tryna make, for example some oils like Castor might make it sticky, and others might soak in quickly but they’re too expensive to actually use. But like that’s at least what i’ve understood from an instructables’ project (which btw was the only article on basic moisturizers that wasn’t selling you brand creams...don’t know why) www.instructables.com/Basic-moisturizer/
I'm just going to point out that there is literally NO SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE that hyaluronic acid works great for moisturizing the skin, it's just another bogus scam by companies. At best it only has some results and in the worst-case scenario would lead to drier skin for people in dry climates.
I’m kind of a viewer who pops in every now and then but after this video i think i’ll be watching more of your content! I love the way you explained everything and the fact that you make mistakes makes me feel more motivated to make more sustainable choices even if being “zero-waste” isn’t 100% possible. Super excited to see what you do next! (And insane that you are closing down patreon to provide free helpful content!)
This conversation is so important. It can be so crippling sometimes when you see the "zero waste" influencers posting all about eco-brands that are SO expensive !! And then one feels guilt because you truly only desire to purchase quality, zero waste items, but cannot possibly afford all of the luxuries of "zero waste" make-up, skin-care, household products, clothes, etc. Love that you posted this!
I have eczema and get folliculitis often - my moisturiser, my shampoo, at times my soaps, and razors are all what are prescribed or recommended by my doctor. A lot of that is plastic. I'm trying to find low waste things that work, but it doesn't always. It is what it is. I don't beat myself up. I try, it doesn't always work, but my skin doesn't get infected
Yeah, I just recycle the bottles and plastic jars. I’ve tried natural products but they really just aren’t enough for my sensitive skin or me and my kid’s eczema
Same. I have eczema on my scalp and need special Urea-shampoo to help me not scratch up open my entire skin. Sadly, this shampoo doesn't exist as a shampoo bar. Same with my skin routine. I have extremely sensible skin and need special lotions and washing lotions and they dont exist as zero waste alternatives.
Yep, also have pretty intense eczema and tried to go zero waste/all-natural on skincare and it backfired majorly. Unfortunately after years of trying everything, I'm back to mainstream plastic products that actually work. Took a while to not feel guilty, but we gotta take care of ourselves!
Any movement that would make you feel guilty for your medication containers is a toxic cult that lacks empathy. Less waste is an admirable direction, although it’s silly how trendy it has become (when I grew up, re-using everything and not shopping very often was just called being poor).
We can do a hundred things right and one thing (arguably) “wrong” and many will ignore all the right and focus on the “wrong”. It’s more important to practice compassion than it is to pick each other apart. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about improvement:)
I just switched back to using liquid shampoo because my brother moved out and I had to confront the fact that there was no one left but me to use up the STASH of shampoo bottles that had accumulated in the cupboard of the bathroom we shared. It will be quite a while before I will be abled to get back to using bars again, just because there are quite a few.
I have a bunch of plastic bottles in my shower as well...from before I switched to shampoo bars. I also just got my partner to switch too, so his old bottles are there too. Then my six year old child has a bottle as well. He's autistic, I can't just switch up his soap without working with him and possibly his therapists. And really...other things are more important for him to work on than no longer using a soap he will actually use happily and properly. Sometimes I look in there and want to just toss it all and just have another zero waste area, but that just feels more wasteful. So beating myself up for it or focusing on what changes I can make won't do anything other than make me feel bad.
Totally!!! Thank you so so much for sharing 💛💛💛 Sometimes we can get so hung up on something as small as that when there is a larger movement at hand. Sending you big hugs! xo
all the old bottles of shampoo conditioner body wash I don't use go under the sink for guests. I did this even before I switched because a lot of soap makes me break out and so I had to do this before which also means I almost never change my bathroom routine
Such an unknown reason to be low waste! There are some people who just can’t be low waste due to sensory needs or ease of use for various disabilities or special needs. I try to be low waste so the only waste that is created was necessary for someone to live their life :)
Hey- if your son uses fidget/stim toys one thing you can do is make them yourself out of recycled/reused items, or you can get them second hand? Just a thought, because I use fidget/stim toys too and I wanted to share. I like making necklaces or using ribbon with beads to just move back and forth
You take the pressure off some of us who attempt to live more consciously but are discouraged because 1 or 5 things we purchase or own isn’t eco-friendly. Thank you for being real, this def helps me get back into the movement!
Your understanding and explanation of zero waste has really changed how I view it. It's been wonderful watching and learning from you as I try to transition to more sustainable choices. I've really struggled with this, so thank you :)
I love this. We’re all perfectly imperfect and you hit the target spot on with this video. There is too much judgement surrounding this lifestyle and like you said, SO WHAT IF IT IS YOUR PLASTIC BOTTLE. Shelbizzle always says: you cannot give all the good the world needs, but the world needs all the good we can give. This is so accurate in this discussion because we’re not perfect but we all need to do our part as often as possible, and be kind when we aren’t able to achieve what we intend. We are set up to fail in this system. It’s not our fault. That’s why we’re advocating for change and taking the responsibility to ourselves. This perfect zero waste idea is unattainable and none of us should hold ourselves to that unrealistic image. What we can do is so our damn hardest to be the best people we can be, and support others to do the same, and offer empathy, kindness, guidance, and love to those who are trying to do the same, or just beginning, etc. We do not need to be beating down others to look better ourselves. Lifting each other up while doing the best we can is
truly one of the best ways to keep this movement going. Alright I’m done blabbering. Have a great day everyone. Sunny love from Florida love Maxximo Morabito
Zero waste for me is a way of decolonizing my mind: a way of mitigating my personal reliance on corporations, becoming more independent in this late-capitalist hellscape, and spending time with people. I spend less time shopping, and more time making things with friends, taking the time to teach one another about the things we have learned. It was the first step for me towards political action, and realizing that possessions truly do not matter. I do not shop from "sustainable" brands, but try to make as many of my own things as possible, because green capitalism still focuses on a consumptive model, and there is no truly "ethical" consumption under capitalism. But we can try to remove ourselves from these streams of wealth and subjugation as much as we can, if only to prove to one another that it is in fact possible. Thank you for this.
I'm blown away by your courage to put so much honesty and emotions in this video. You broke this issue down imperfectly perfect. And the best thing about it is, that it is still soooo encouraging to just try your best, despite the fear of beeing not enough. Thank you for sharing. ❤
no one can be entirely zero waste so it really bothers me when you are trying to do a good thing by trying in the first place and you are still beaten down for it. Also, what is this culture we have now of people 'calling out' others when they don't know that persons situation, history, life etc...assumptions! its damaging in so many ways. lets be kinder. Thanks for the video some very valid points!
Any individual change must be accompanied by political actions, to ask for change by the people who lead the country, to vote as you said. Politcs and activism are essential, because this is a fight just like others social justice fights, the can be solved by regular people just trough democratic tools such as voting and marching on the streets
You go girl! It definitely makes us feel better knowing that there’s other people out there that feel so overwhelmed with all of the knowledge that we have because we do care about our world. Don’t worry about the negative comments most of us are here to learn and be inspired. And you have done a pretty good job doing that! ☺️
I frequently have to rely on packaged foods instead of cooking from scratch due to my chronic illness, but since I fit into the typical size range for thrift stores I rarely need to buy new clothing. It is better for people to focus on what they can do rather than feeling guilty for what they can't.
I really appreciate your honesty here! It's really encouraging to me, because while I strive to reduce my waste where I can, and encourage my friends and family to do the same, there are certain areas of life where that's just not possible. For example, I take important medication that comes in plastic pill bottles, and there's no zero waste swap for that, and one of my disabled friends relies on plastic bendy straws to drink water when they're bedbound. I really appreciate the recognition that zero waste is an ideal to strive for, not a complete lifestyle that's accessible to everyone.
I felt that "I have all this information and I dont know what to do with it". This is so true. It's hard, it really is but all that matters is that we are trying. That is better than realizing and ignoring that we need change in this word.
This makes me feel amazing. As a vegan trying to go zero waste in a family of 3 non vegan zero waste people, I put soooo much pressure on myself to try and be 100% zero waste. but I try to tell myself that I can’t control what my family does and some swaps I want to have I can’t do in this very moment but the fact I know what I want to do in the future is half the battle. Thanks
I understand the struggle. I’m currently trying to get into Minimalism and not over consume products, but my family is the complete opposite. They’re constantly buying things we don’t need and just hoard things. I know everything will be better when I’m living by myself. I also hope you achieve the goals with want with being vegan and zero waste.
Same! I’ve been eating plant based for about 6 years, since I was around 12/13. I always urge my family to because it’s good for them and the planet. I started becoming waste conscious about a year and a half ago. I try to urge my family to not buy paper towels or paper plates, etc. I tell them to use what they have before they get more. Ultimately I can only control my decisions. If you’re younger you may be unable to even make many of your own decisions. Just do what you can, and make sure you maintain your sanity.
I also am trying to live more suststainbly, but my wife is firmly not. We both grew up poor, but went in opposite directions psychologically. I learned to love thrifted things, and second hand, and making the best out of things. However, she went the other direction, and she lesrned how to collect, and has an emotional attachment to her belongings, and. Likes to buy new things and Have lots of clothes.
Thank you for your wisdom in showing the complexity of this issue. I got so depressed that I was doing something wrong every day, all day. So, to hear someone actually explain these same feelings is very comforting. I have decided to just really work on one thing for 3 months at a time to change my personal habits.
thankyou. so glad you're showing things you still buy rather than hiding because we need that! alot of creators say "i don't have a sustainable option for this yet so i don't want to share what i do" but we need to see that because when we need things and we can;'t get them without plastic we feel guilty
I'm not quite sure how to put this... As I was watching this and reading comments I realized we might do ourselves and those around us good if we take "zero waste" to also mean "let's not waste our time or energy". We all have finite resources of time and energy. Let's try not to waste Those resources by nitpicking at others and causing them to waste resources worrying that they're not perfect. Make sense? 🤔
I just watched this and I NEEDED to hear this. Thanks for being so vulnerable. The pressure I put on myself to try to be perfectly eco-friendly is so real. We have to let ourselves LIVE and be proud of the many sustainable choices we make and not beat ourselves up over the occasional chip bag.
Zero waste has always been such a misnomer to me. I have a chronic illness and medication comes in plastic bottles. More than I could repurpose in a lifetime. I have enough guilt about being a burden to my family and society without going into the waste I produce to live a somewhat normal life. Thank you for making this video, I'll definitely rewatch it on my bad days ❤
I agree. the zero waste shampoo bar i use is 7 dollars for 80 grams. And it is costly for a place where I live. People think metal is good but forget that mining is equally bad to the environment.
Yes! You summed up how I feel about zero waste. After reading Bea Johnson’s book I tried making too many changes at once and wound up snapping at a waitress for asking me several times if I wanted a plastic bag to put my leftovers in. I then knew I was going too fast too quickly and not giving myself grace. I love the term “eco stress”. P.S. I’m new here and I’m subscribing:)
As much as Zero Waste is an admirable goal, in our current system, it's not easy or practical to be 100% Zero Waste. It's enough to do what you can, where you are, with what's available to you. Reduced waste is far better than not trying at all. I, personally, strive for 80% sustainable/healthy/minimalist/eco-friendly/plastic-free/etc... sometimes it's 60%, sometimes it's 90%, but I'm happy with landing somewhere around 80%. My mental health tends to suffer when I get caught up in perfection, lol, so in order to stay sane AND happy with my choices, I go for balance instead. Keep inspiring us with your imperfect humanity :)
No matter what, you’ve been a great inspiration to 200k+ subscribers who become great examples as well. You’re not just little old you making a difference with your own decisions. You inspire others to aspire toward the same goals and respect of the Earth. Love you!
Thank you SO much. I have wanted to start making changes towards zero waste, or lower waste, but I would always get overwhelmed and feel like I wasn't doing enough cause I couldn't do EVERYTHING. Thank you for using your platform to tell people it's ok to not be perfect, to just try. Hugely appreciated by this gal for sure!
I appreciate you chatting about this and bringing this into the forefront of the conversation. I've felt this way for a long time and was disappointed in how it was never talked about. I just wish more people would call out the BS and downfalls of what the zero waste movement has come to! I hope people can see this with an open mind!!!
This is so comforting. I have made a few swaps here and there to help reduce the plastic use in my home but I always feel like it isn’t enough. Not that I’m going to be complacent and stop making swaps where I can, but this definitely makes me feel better.
Thank you for this video, I was actually beating myself up a little because I easily swapped most of the products in my bathroom but I can’t find a bar shampoo that would work with my scalp (I have sensitive scalp and I get eczema easily, I tried so many bars 😫) but you are right I should not be so hard on myself 😊 I’m doing my best
Hi sweetie!!! Have you tried making your own lliquid shampoo??? Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (SCI) is an extremely gentle surfactant and emulsifier or you can try using coco betaine, distilled water ( I think is better for your sensitive scalp to use chamomile hydrolate) xanthan gum and vegetable glycerin. There are so many online recipes so you can do some research on what ingredients are best for your needs. On the other hand most of the ingredients come in plastic bottles but you can always reuse them and make more recipes and products with the supplies and ingredients you bought. I hope this helps a little. Xx
@@Marielegoth thank you so much ! I’m saving this info :) I was actually thinking about doing something like this copying the ingredients of the shampoo I’m using for my scalp that is sulfate free and has some tea tree oil and it’s very gentle ^^
@@RoxyRocksTV i know that this is a couple weeks late, but I do wanna encourage you to try the home made shampoo, but caution you about the tea tree oil! Properly diluted tea tree essential oil (small amounts in carriers like jojoba and castor oil) is great, but, like any essential oils, tea tree oil can really damage sensitive skin and worsen your problems! Essential oils are really great in an aromatherapy sense but theyre also extremely dangerous to the skin and the respiratory system if in excess or improperly used.
I had a similar issue and I started washing my hair with rye flour. It has worked really well - except for me smelling mildly like newly baked bread for half a day (it's not a bad smell)! Wish you all the best🤗🤗
Thank you for this! I'm a small "zero waste" (practical sustainable living rather) TH-camr and feel this pressure too. Glad to hear you're doing well, though and happy to hear from you more often!
Could you please do an updated skincare video? I would really enjoy that. Also, you are a huge inspiration to me. I am now more thoughtful about me choices.
Accidentally came to this channel now for the first time, but really love your energy and that you decided to be more honest, realistic and speak up against judging one another!
I feel like with being zero waste, if you are growing you WILL come to these exact realizations. ❤️ This is the point in time when a lot of people would give up because they feel like they aren’t making a difference or because they aren’t doing it perfectly. The people that come through it with deeper understanding and grace towards themselves are making the most difference! I applaud you! Thank you so much for sharing.
CHRISTIE! I’m so glad you made this video. You’ve done a wonderful job of incorporating your philosophy of “low waste living” over “zero waste living” casually throughout for videos for the past few years, and that’s been such a powerful shift in how I think about sustainability in my life. This video came as no surprise to me (and probably many of your other viewers) so I really hope you feel like you have people behind you in this next phase of your career! I’m crossing my fingers for more podcast episodes in the future. Cheers!!
Thank you for this video! So important. It really helps me feel okay about doing what I CAN do and feel empowered instead of feeling guilty constantly...
I loved this so dearly!! the stress and pressure is something that quite drastically impacted my sustainability as having been through a lot this year mentally and coming from a very toxic-thinking place, it wasn't something I could still do while trying to learn self compassion. these views need to be discussed and breaks taken if they're the best option right now!
No, thank YOU for supporting it! I hope this is the last “here’s a change I’m making” video for a while haha cheers to new adventures 💛 So much love! x
love this! its more companies and big corps than people ourselves but as a whole if everyone tries a little we can make a big difference! The main thing is that everyone is conscious of zero waste what it can do and what it means
You turned negative thoughts into something wonderful! It makes me feel better to hear what the true intention behind Zero Waste is and I love that you've decided to use this as an opportunity to share more and be more real. I am also just selfishly happy to have more vlogs from you! :)
Thanks for this video!! I love it, finally an honest talk. I didn’t find this video negative at all because hearing someone actually say to not feel so guilty was awesome.
Love this, thanks for being authentic about it! It's not easy and not perfectly doable all the time, and it's time we stop judging each other for not getting it perfect 100% of the time, but rather commending individual efforts to live consciously
And that’s okay. Some can do less and some can do more. I do believe every little bit helps. If lots of people are doing it, it will make an impact. You just do what you can do!
"It;s not about individual choices, it's about advocating for systems change." YES! Yes, yes, yes. Stop putting the pressure on the individual to change their whole life, but rather educate them about the root of the issue and encourage them to make change in the world regardless of their individual lifestyle choices!
Thank you so much for making this video. I recently bought a natural deodorant because it was zero/low waste, only to find out my underarms couldn’t handle the baking soda, and I had to repurchase plastic-container deodorant while I wait for another option. That really demotivated me, but this made me feel so much better! ❤️ Thank you!
Oh no! I’ve been learning so much about how that’s such a common allergy! You’re definitely not alone! 💛 My best friend has been struggling with finding the perfect baking soda free deo for a year now. It’s defs a journey, but you’ve totally got this! Sending you a big hug! xo
I've been using a natural deodorant called Native. It's not zero waste but it does come in a cardboard tube with no plastic. Its a bit pricey but one tube tends to last me a whole month
@@kategriggs1676 Try their Sensitive Skin formula! I had a bad reaction to Schmidts and then tried Native Sensitive skin and it went well (although it needs more frequent application than their regular formula). BUT! Now that my pits are more used to a natural deodorant, I tried Regular Native again (in the paper packaging) and I'm having way less irritation with it. I think that the bacterial change in my armpits helped. I also wait a few hours after shaving to apply and if my armpits feel sensitive, I use one of the (many) baking soda free deodorants I have around for a day. I had to try a ton to find one that did anything.
I appreciate this so much. I've felt this way about the community for awhile - it's far too complicated an issue to fix on an individual level. The amount of green washing and unintended consequences to purchasing various products makes it so challenging to navigate the market as a conscious consumer. We need more market regulation.
Eco anxiety has plagued me since I was a kid as well! Love your channel and your vibe and I am excited to see what comes next! Much love from Windsor Ontario 💚
I’ve just moved out on my own since September and trying to be more aware of my possessions and waste, which made me stumble upon minimalism and zero waste. But I’ve noticed that I’ve been getting stressed out about the swaps/my budget for it and beating myself up/feel guilty when i can’t help but create waste even though I try not to, like packaged food or that I find swaps so expensive! Thank you for the video, it really helped.
I fell in love with you earlier this year and: 1) I'm so glad you're ok and continuing to hone what is healthiest for YOU; 2) the message you put out in this video is so important. 2020 and the pandemic taught me to accept my personal limitations. Perfectionism is paralyzing and there is a whole spectrum of life in between the ideal and not trying at all.
I love this video! I've missed your uploads and am very excited that you'll be uploading regularly again. But I will say please don't pressure yourself too much if you're not feeling the best and are worried about your schedule. We will understand and still be here when you're ready. 🙂 One of the reasons I've loved your channel for so long is your authenticity so I really appreciate you saying you are going to be transparent about things. We are all human, we cannot be perfectly zero waste in this flawed world, and you are making a massive difference. If lentil wraps and chips make you happy you eat them girl. Big love. ❤
I personally use the term "reduced waste" it's a lot less pressure and is a more positive focus. For example "I am going to use a reusable straw because I can and I want to" is a more positive mindset then "If I ever use a plastic straw again, I'm a terrible person".

I love you so much. You’re such a sweetheart. Every single video I watch, I feel like a friend is talking to me about things I deal with too as a minimalist, vegan trying my best to live a sustainable life. 💕 We get judged and pointed at a lot... and it’s refreshing to listen to a real human talking about the real stuff ✨ so thank you from the bottom of my heart 💕
I am beginning my journey now, and I am so happy that I found your video before diving right into the “zero-waste” and am now looking towards a low waste lifestyle. Now I am going into this change with a slightly changed mindset that I don’t have to replace absolutely everything.... it’s to be more conscious and of doing what u can where you can. Hopefully this circular economy will take shape towards our future.
So basically the term "Zero Waste" is misleading. It should be called something else. "Low Carbon Lifestyle" or "Low waste lifestyle" would surely be better?
I stopped posting videos subconsciously about being zero waste because of so many random trolls wouldn't stop. Being zero waste is soooo complicated sometimes when you need certain things in your diet /make myself feel healthy! Thank you for this video!! So encouraging and I really respect you and your choices :)
Really appreciate this!! I can totally relate. I started the zero waste journey really strong, only to be plagued by anxiety about the massive lifestyle changes, the financial pressure of zero watse and the also finding out how many products are just greenwashed. But what you’re saying is true. We can’t care for our planet and then not care for each other. The judgement needs to stop. I pretty sure every person trying zerowaste is hard enough on themselve we don’t need to be hard on others aswell.
If you reuse stuff like the glass jar your spaghetti comes in a the plastic tubs stuff come in make your own food coffee/tea and put it in your own containers -yes include your cool whip containers then you'll save a lot of money. I remember only having $30 a week to live off of in college. Going less waste saves me $900 a year with cloth wipes and shampoo bars and a drying rack.
This is the first video of yours I watched and let me say this: I do not follow people who show me how perfectly they are doing it. I follow people who show me reality because that inspires me whereas "perfect" people discourage me as I can never reach that.
I make upcycled 90s themed masks and sell on Etsy, and I use those cellophane bags! If a customer asks I would TOTALLY use less packaging. It’s something for me to keep in mind! 💙🙂
Sorry about your Patreon... I'm so glad you're making your content free (my librarian heart sings!) If people want to "tip" you to say thanks, you could consider Ko-fi? a thought, idk.
Preach girl. Any progress and effort is a step forward!! You can not be perfect. The shaming has to stop. It’s a challenge in the current world we live in and if you’re trying your best that is more than most people even do. You’re awesome! And funny! ❤️ great channel.
Gosh, yes, this goes for going “vegan” aswell. No one ever is so radically critical all of a sudden as when you say, I am going zero waste it I am going vegan. Very one needs to point out what your doing wrong all of a sudden...
LOVE this video. You go girl. Be real. You taking pressure off of yourself is also taking pressure off your viewers, so THANK YOU!!!! As someone who also experiences eco-anxiety from time to time and as someone who sees MAJOR flaws in existing systems that are bigger than me, I greatly appreciated the message of this video! Thanks for all you do. I look forward to your upcoming content!
I was so impressed with this video. I can’t imagine the pressure of being a TH-cam-er. In general I think people who post critical cheap shots are ninnies, but you did a great job of putting your finger on the real issue and blowing it up. You don’t have to be perfect and even more so, I think you’ll find that being more authentically yourself (pimples and all) makes you more relatable and lovable. We all struggle. I get frustrated that individual humans feel the pressure to make up for the crappy decisions of the industrial fat cats. You are doing the best you can in the system we live in and it inspires me to aim for that as well.
As someone who just started a low-waste journey THIS VIDEO IS WHAT I NEEDED!!!!!!! i have been pretty good about not worrying about being COMPLETELY ZERO-WASTE. BUT i am doing my best and that's what matters. YOU are awesome and amazing been following you for a couple of months now, and i always enjoy what you have to say. so THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO!!!! happy fall :3
found it funny how ridiculed zero waste was on “the politician”, like making coffe w bath water!!! i’m sorry i don’t want to waste water but i would NEVERRR
Lol I love that "imperfect" "I'm perfect" thing... I have obsessive compulsive disorder and I learned about this movement. I'm still trying to find the right balance. This might get dark or seem fucked up but I was having nightmares about not being perfect at zero waste. This really helped me thanks
We rather have 100 people failing at “zero waste” than one person doin it perfectly. Power in numbers.
zziggy808 amen
only destiel its more beneficial for the overall movement for a huge group of people to be conscious and trying towards low waste, while perhaps imperfect; rather than one single person being a perfectly zero waste individual. change happens when the masses open their hearts and minds
I totally agree! 💛

FOR REAL
@Destiny wix true, that's one way of combatting it by "voting with your money", but I think it's also important to put pressure on public officials to introduce regulations that will prevent companies from being so wasteful, to create a more circular economy. There's only so much we as individual consumers can do to pressure multimillion dollar industries. At the end of the day, laws and regulations would hold a lot more sway.
This is SO important. "Zero-Waste" is so toxic now. It's not all or nothing. Conscious living
Agreee
I love that. Conscious living is a better term.
agreed
i feel like zero waste needs to rebrand into minimal waste
Why would anyone be emotional for being in the middle of a pandemic of which no one has the disease? Get real.

Exactly ! I am from India and in our households we naturally do all those things you mentioned !
Agreed! Though I'm not Asian, I know my family reuses things all time, and I try as well without really knowing this stuff.
THIS!!! I totally agree!! I don’t like the term zero waste because it’s so all or nothing
Yes! Agree. We should create a new term. I’ve seen “less waste” floating around. Not catchy, but it does feel like less pressure. 👍
I think "low waste" should really be used instead of zero waste. Much less pressure and far more accurate
Immy from Sustainably Vegan using the term "low impact living" which I absolutely adore.
The whole point, as she read in the definition, was that it's a goal. Not an 'exact science' so to speak.
“Just because you can’t do everything doesn’t mean you can’t do anything”
Everything in this video makes me super happy! Followed :)
"What is worth doing is worth doing poorly." Whatever little changes you can make is still a step in the right direction.
This is lovely and I'm going to remember it. Thank you.
Said to me recently: "Don't let perfect be the enemy of good."
@@KM-np1rf Yep! Body lotion works best applied to damp skin. Game changer.
@Nobody Knows it becomes a moisturizer when you use oil afterwards. Actually i think the most basic moisturizers are just water and oil held together as an emulsion, but i’ll go and double check
Edit: 31 minutes later and all i’ve learned is that yes...you can make a moisturizer from just oil and water, but you also need other stuff to keep them _together_ (like ewax) and you can’t just use any oil for the cream/lotion/whatever you’re tryna make, for example some oils like Castor might make it sticky, and others might soak in quickly but they’re too expensive to actually use.
I declare myself as a low waster, I don't have money to go full zero waste, I do my best, and that is something.
Yes! It's something that you need money to do. Locally sourced products are pricey and it isn't always do-able for everyone.
Hi! I make tons of videos teaching people how to live affordably low waste with an emphasis on mental health if that’s your kind of jam🌻
“That circular economy is not in use yet.” Yet is such a powerful word.
Same!!
Yes, we need to let go of this idea of perfection. It deters a lot of people from even trying and we don't want that. We're human.
It’s called all or nothing thinking, and a cognitive behavior we need to recognize is there.
Zero waste does not work for people with medical needs. It's perfectly fine for you to put your health first.
I thought this was clickbait and I left completely enlightened. Thank you girl for your brilliant videos and informational content 🙏
Use up what you have and don't feel bad about it,
Such an unknown reason to be low waste!
We need to require that companies take their products back.
In countries besides america they reuse glass bottles by washing them!

Omg no blabbering at all! THANK YOU for sharing! I totallly agreeeee! And you’re so right, Shelbi’s quote is SO spot on! And powerful! 💛
My big sister used to say we are all perfectly imperfect too 💕
Zero waste for me is a way of decolonizing my mind: a way of mitigating my personal reliance on corporations, becoming more independent in this late-capitalist hellscape, and spending time with people.
Thank you so much I might also just be cheap haha >;)
Yes yes yessssss! Sending ya a big hug xo

You go girl! It definitely makes us feel better knowing that there’s other people out there that feel so overwhelmed with all of the knowledge that we have because we do care about our world. Don’t worry about the negative comments most of us are here to learn and be inspired. And you have done a pretty good job doing that! ☺️
THIS!! I do think people are moving past the stage of perfection which is brilliant to see, and videos like this are a great reminder :)
This is why I prefer the term "low waste" because "zero waste" has become a very judgmental movement.
"don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good" - well done to you for all your efforts
thankyou. so glad you're showing things you still buy rather than hiding because we need that! alot of creators say "i don't have a sustainable option for this yet so i don't want to share what i do" but we need to see that because when we need things and we can;'t get them without plastic we feel guilty
I love the way you explain things so articulately in a way even my 3 brain cells can understand
Love you!
Thank you so much we need to talk more about eco-anxiety and the pressure we feel. Thanks again and it’s ok to be perfectly imperfect 🥰
@@RoxyRocksTV It was nothing sweetie!!! Xx ❤
Yes! Will do! 💛
Accidentally came to this channel now for the first time, but really love your energy and that you decided to be more honest, realistic and speak up against judging one another!
I feel like with being zero waste, if you are growing you WILL come to these exact realizations. ❤️
This is the point in time when a lot of people would give up because they feel like they aren’t making a difference or because they aren’t doing it perfectly.
Thank you for being honest in this corner of the internet 🤪 love your content and I’m SO excited to see raw honest Christina twice a week ☺️❤️
I didn’t find this video negative at all because hearing someone actually say to not feel so guilty was awesome.
others have made the change to “low waste” bc they’ve been like yeah zero waste is not realistic tbh
Love this, thanks for being authentic about it! It's not easy and not perfectly doable all the time, and it's time we stop judging each other for not getting it perfect 100% of the time, but rather commending individual efforts to live consciously
Love this! I have celiac disease, so I can't get bulk food. I always feel super guilty with how much packaging I consume because of this.
Sending you a big hug! xo
Sedona Christina thank you so much 💗🌱 I adore your content and can’t wait to see all the changes you pursue!!
I've been using a natural deodorant called Native. It's not zero waste but it does come in a cardboard tube with no plastic. Its a bit pricey but one tube tends to last me a whole month
AllyJay 221 thats actually the exact one i used 😅 they have baking soda in the formula
I totally agree with you!! It's not about one person doing it perfectly, but about many people doing it imperfectly.
I love this video! I've missed your uploads and am very excited that you'll be uploading regularly again. But I will say please don't pressure yourself too much if you're not feeling the best and are worried about your schedule. We will understand and still be here when you're ready. 🙂
One of the reasons I've loved your channel for so long is your authenticity so I really appreciate you saying you are going to be transparent about things.
I'm so jealous of that silky blanket of hair you've got.
I love these real down to earth videos. Makes me think about what I can do and where to forgive myself alittle bit.
So basically the term "Zero Waste" is misleading. It should be called something else. "Low Carbon Lifestyle" or "Low waste lifestyle" would surely be better?
Someone suggested "conscious lifestyle".
@@ma.jbrony1754 I like to say alternative lifestyle because it is the most inclusive of all the the sub genres of sustainability.
I stopped posting videos subconsciously about being zero waste because of so many random trolls wouldn't stop. Being zero waste is soooo complicated sometimes when you need certain things in your diet /make myself feel healthy! Thank you for this video!! So encouraging and I really respect you and your choices :)
I would still live to see a video about the swaps along your journey that felt lowered your quality of life.
I’ve gotten so into zero waste lately, but being a college student makes it really hard
LOL, we love that shampoo bar dance energy 😂👏
Hehe 🙈🤸♀️
Looking forward to real and raw videos ❤️
Let's all stop expecting perfection from others and ourselves.
I think most of us on this wave crashed around the same time . I’m so happy to see honesty in this regard
