What a great idea!! I've been looking at 3d printed comb/hackle sets for ages since the wooden ones are so pricey. I've noticed you can't really find any variety for finer combs or hackles with the 3d ones. This solves that problem as the tines are spaced much closer together. Will be giving this a try for sure... never even thought of onion holders!! Thank you!!

Thank you! Be sure to check out the blog post about this as I show my updated version showing how I made a top for it to allow me to squeeze a lot more fibre on. I still use this all the time and it’s brilliant for finer fibres like merino and bamboo.

Thanks from an absolute beginner on a budget .

You’re very welcome! To try out my concept, I began with just two onion slicers held in a vice, and a couple of lollipop sticks in between, which might be an even cheaper alternative (if you already have a vice or clamp that would work).

I’m going to tweak this idea and set the onion holders into a routed groove in the wood with UV resin ❤

Oh that would look good. I used resin with my 3D printed wool combs and the finish is so much more professional.

That's brilliant, I'm so glad you found it helpful. My hackle skills are improving all the time so make sure you take a look at some of my later hackle blending videos. (I'm slightly embarrassed by the demonstration at the end!)

Great idea Thankyou! I came up with dog grooming combs but these tines are longer and sharper pointed 👍 also seen someone use metal Afro combs they’d be extra long just not pointy 😊 definitely making mine this weekend when my onion holders arrive 🎉

You’re welcome! I tried dog grooming combs too and I came to the same conclusion. They were great for preparing really fine chiengora though. I did consider those Afro combs with metal tines but I saw spinners saying that the spikes could bend or break. I’m finding the tines on the onion holders pretty solid so far.

I found this video as I was reading your blog which I came across looking for something else, I also love my nano 1.1, and my mum gifted me the nano 2 for my birthday last year. I like the hackle you made and I'll be making myself one, do you think the tines been to be bent like on the Viking hackles or do think it works just fine without the bend, the video shows you doing it and it seems easy enough without, thank you for sharing. Cheers from Tasmania!

Thank you so much for your comment. To be honest, I’ve only ever used my hand made hackle and mini wool combs so they are my only frame of reference. I find the tines on the onion slicers/holders work well not being bent. I would love them to be ever so slightly longer but I can’t see the advantage of them being slightly bent. Maybe somebody with experience of the bent tines can comment on their advantage…

@@KathrynCraftmehappy Thank you for taking the time to reply. Yes it would be good if someone could tell us if having the tines bent gives better advantage or not. Your hand made hackle suits my budget, I don't have the means to buy the equipment so I try to make it when I can, I've made a picker which works reasonably well. Thank you for the video it's good learning how to make things from others and good that you could share Thank you. Cheers!

Hello again! Would e6000 serve as an epoxy glue, do you know?

It’s pretty good stuff. I haven’t tried it on wood and plastic but it’s probably the next best thing to epoxy.
