  • Fiber Arts are an endless rabbit hole. First you learn to knit. Then you learn to weave. Then you learn to spin on a drop spindle. Then you get a spinning wheel. Then you start processing raw fiber...which requires cards, and also combs. But, it's a lovely journey and a very fulfilling hobby.
I'm going to show you in upcoming videos how I process raw fiber and spin it into yarn, but today let's take a look at how I made the tools I'll be using in those videos.
Here's how I made wool combs out of scrap oak bits of oak lying around and a few dollars worth of nails from the local hardware store, saving myself $100.

That just reminded me of how much I miss "helping" my father in his workshop. He passed away 11 years ago this week. I love using things that he made or fixed for me. It makes me smile every time. ❤

Also perfect for those zombie apocalypse adventures 😁
I have a similar set. I learned quickly not to get distracted while using them.

Shopsmith tools are still being made in Dayton, Ohio, and many of them are one the used market as well, so get your own! Fun video. Scott

That brought back memories. I got my ShopSmith 58 years ago when I was in high school. It doesn't have any guards on it. It will be interesting to see if the nails bend when you pull them through the wool. To make them harder you could have heated them up with a torch until red and then dunked them in oil.

Oooh! I have an angora rabbit and combing isn't usually necessary, but it is helpful for getting VM out of the cloud.

Thank you for sharing the process of making these combs. GLITTER!
I have Cotswold sheep and the wool is great for combs. The problem I've had with commercial combs is that they are never the right size for my stubby hands. Making some from scratch would be a great option!
Now you've tempted me into yet another project for my to-do list.
Although I must say, I love the graph paper idea. Looking forward to seeing the hackle video.

These look beautiful! Well done, and what a nice project to be able to share with your dad. I didn't quite understand how you got the nails in, did you just hammer them into the holes from the back?
