Eddie Van Halen didn't learn to play this way, He invented it. Before EVH this didn't exist.
This solo is a combination of a lot of Eddie Van Halen solo pieces and riffs;
1:41 is a song called '316', which was named after his son's birthday, March 16 (from 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge').
2:46 is a variation of 'Eruption'. He uses the two-handed tapping technique (from Van Halen's first album).
8:24 is a variation of 'Cathedral'. He uses a technique called 'violining'. He hammers on the notes on the fretboard and creates volume swells with the guitar's volume knob. (from 'Diver Down').
11:06 is a variation of the opening riff of 'Mean Street'. He incorporates a form of bass 'slapping' (from 'Fair Warning').
13:11 is a variation of 'Spanish Fly'. More tapping (from 'Van Halen II')
15:20 is an improvised ending, showcasing his unique fast double-picking technique.
Eddie was an innovative guitarist who incorporated harmonics, feedback, 'whammy bar' action, heavy amp distortion, and phase shifter and delay effects into his playing along with his sheer speed, dexterity and sense of melody.

@@WookieWarriorz That's true that there are guys doing amazing things with tapping now, beyond Eddie, but it all started with him. They only do what they do because they heard him doing what he did. Gotta respect those who came before. There are unbelievable guitar players in rock out there, but for me it really comes down to three guys. Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, and Eddie Van Halen. They changed the way everyone else played after them. The next transcendent player is out there, we just haven't heard them yet.

10 multi platinum studio Albums ,,2 Diamond status albums went over 10x platinum, many many top 20 songs, put a humbucker in a stratocaster and changed the electric guitar industry overnight, forever, his Amplifiers sound or "brown sound" has been chased, imitated , worshipped and analyzed by millions of Rock guitarists since 1978, his finger tapping caught the ears of every guitarist who plays rock guitar to this day, his striped guitar is recognized worldwide as VAN HALEN, filled hundreds of stadiums , year after year after year, with massive Rock shows, played the Solo on Michael Jacksons "Beat it", ...etc etc... hard to name another Artist , of any kind in that zone. ever.
And indeed, no reaction can explain what Edward Lodewijk van Halen did or meant to the world of rock guitar playing, that's why it's always needed to use 'etc, etc', because no one can cover it all.

You can play an oboe jazz solo. Toshinori Kondo can put one of the World's best horn licks down on a hip-hop track. A bluegrass guitarist can crush on a blues track.

Eddie Van Halen he will always be remembered as the Johann Sebastian Back of the electric guitar. Just like back then, he lifts us up to heaven with his musical majesty, and now he does it on the great heavenly stage.

You both mentioned piano, drums and guitar. Guitar is Ed’s third instrument, first was classical piano, then drums.

Eddie said that he was not the guitar god, but it was Alex Lifeson of Rush that was the real guitar god.
One thing people forget or do not realize.... Eddie created and invented the sounds.... WITHOUT A FOOT PEDAL!! He created the sounds out of necessity because at the beginning of VanHalens career... Eddie didn't have the money to afford a foot pedal at the time so..... He created his own... There will never be another like Eddie he truly was one of a kind and the world going forward will never know a soul like his. Rest in peace Eddie.
I never thought I would ever tear up during an Eddie guitar solo but seeing him back in the day with Sammy really got me. When you grew up in the 70s and 80s it’s tough to lose Eddie Van Halen! It’s like losing part of your childhood.

Still can't bring ourselves to say the words. EVH will always be here. And as long as G Lynch, Nuno and every other 80s metal guitar slinger is tearing it up on stage, Ed lives on.
You know how people say "I remember the minute I heard JFK was assassinated?" Or, 9/11, MLK, etc? Ed was a HUGE influence on me as a guitarist. Ne changed the way I played. I don`t tap at all because it just is not my thing, it was Ed`s. But pretty much everything else Ed was there pushing me to play and push my muscles in my forearms, wrist and fingers until they locked up from extreme exertion, from 4 to 6 hours a day, sometimes even more. As a young guitarist in the 80`s, us guitarists were goin babannas because of Ed Van Halen. His tone, his chops his energy , speed, clean picking and his best weapon, his swing. His rhythm playing. If I needed inspiration he was there. We all couldn`t wait for the next Van Halen record to come out. So it brings me to this; I was texting with my cousin waiting on line at the bank and he said Ed Van Halen died. I thought he was breaking my balls, joking. Then I thought of his cancer that we all thought was in remission, so I ran thru the radio channels while still on line for the ATM and BOOM, "Edward Van Halen has died at 65 of the throat cancer he has battled for years". I don`t even know how to explain my reaction. I just stared out the window until the car behind me honked at me to move up. I was numb for the rest of the day, basically in denial.He was there for almost my whole life and suddenly now gone. Jesus Christ, now I have Jimmy Page and Joe Walsh left. They are getting up there as we all are, us 80`s Gen. X dudes. It is just a matter of time now. So the world keeps spinning and the cycle of life goes on.
You two are really observant, Lex first said it's like he's playing the piano, then it's like he's playing the drums. EVH started on the piano as a child, went to the drums, didn't like it landed on the guitar. Love your reaction to one of the greats Mr. Edward Van Halen :P
Nobody ever catches the part of him playing “cathedral” that he is using the volume knob in the right hand and bending the strings with the other. Starts at 8:21 in this video. Love seeing people watch this in Awe as I did as a kid and until this day.

Im not a very good guitar play, but i knew of that technic from many years ago, rolling the volume. So some us caught it, lol

That was probably the biggest trademark of VanHalen in the DL Roth days. They always gave off that awesome "fun" vibe. "Jump" was nothing but fun. Especially the video.

You two need to check out Tina S. A French girl who did Moonlight Sonata flawlessly on Guitar. Has a lot of finger tapping, which was spectacular. A lot of professional musicians said they couldn’t duplicate what she did. She was 17 at the time of the video she did.

I know I've read on here where people said that someone asked him in an interview who he thought was the best guitarist and he said go ask Alex Lifeson. Alex is pretty damn good. But I think Eddy might have just being modest. Cause damn he was good

As great as Eddie was, my favorite thing about him was that he always had so much fun playing. You'll never see anyone smile ear to ear the whole time he played, the way Eddie did.
Eruption, the actual studio song is mixed up throughout this solo, which was probably in the middle of the show. If you check out Eruption/You Really Got Me, you'll hear what the song really sounds like.

Coincidently, "Eruption" was a warm up in the studio during the first album that the engineer just happened to record....luckily for us!
In addition, there are riffs and techniques from many of the albums in this...."Little Guitars", "Mean Street", etc.
Someone amazing gave me the answer to this a long time ago and I forget and am hoping someone will know, the slow part he plays in the beginning does anyone know what the name of that track was or what cd it was on?

Perhaps the greatest Rock Electric Guitarist of all time. He was by far the most creative! Man, I really miss him.
The way Lex smiles watching the King EVH playing Eruption makes me happy that Eddie's music is still appreciated so much.
Answering some questions of yours: “Eruption” (the way he was playing it at that time) was really just a skeletal framework he filled in with “pieces” he had wrote. There IS a formal “Eruption” piece but EVH would often elaborate in a freelancing kind of way. Two: yes, he knew what he was going to play beforehand. Certain head gestures or mouth openings BEFORE the riff is a telltale sign. And, yes, his practicing is a thing of legend. He had “played those riffs a ‘few’ times.” Three: “piano” is a key word, Lex. EVH was trained in classical piano before his rock career… even to go as far as winning competitions. Funny, but he couldn’t read sheet music. Average THAT into your estimation of the man. One of possibly three of The.Most.Innovative guitarists of all time. Not “rock” guitar-GUITAR. So much more about the dude but you can read up on your own if/when you have time.
The piano is a percussion instrument, and that's how Eddie approached the guitar, less of a stringed instrument more percussion.
I saw them in concert once, and my sister-in-law and her boyfriend had backstage passes. Before the concert even started, she was back there and he was just sitting on the steps, playing. "Practice" doesn't do justice to his preparation.
Yeah, it's a random solo. Sounds nothing like on the album, though a very limited number of parts from that version appear here. That's why it's called, Eruption. It's an explosion of sound translated from his mind, through his mouth, to his fingers, and NO, this is NOT taught, he made up a lot of this, or pulled it from other guitarists and expanded on it. This is uniquely Eddie.

At one point he even makes it sound like a cello…such a great guitarist!

I love seeing you two experience this for the first time. I must have watched this guitar solo 200 times as a kid and pretty much know all the parts by heart. Eddie truly was the best.
This segment took place in the middle of the concert. It was a montage of all his greatest pieces of his guitar works. He didn't invent the "both hands on the neck" called tapping but he did perfect it and take it a level further like with everything else he did. RIP Eddie
When you think of guitar, people say Hendrix, Clapton, Jimmy Paige....for me, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eddie Van Halen are the top two....Eddie revolutionised the guitar

To answer your question about whether the solo is structured or improvised: It's both. Eddie played a solo like this during most of their live shows and it usually consisted of bits and pieces from several different Van Halen albums, glued together with a fair amount of improv.
Exactly. Eruption was a solo (short explosive 2 minute piece of music) on their very first record. Eddie did several of these pieces of music over the course of the bands recording history, this solo is pretty much all of them sewn together by Eddies free flow of playing as he improves his way to and through each composition with a love for the instrument you rarely see. Eddie always has a smile on his face when he is playing. His guitar was literally part of him

Glad y'all picked this one. I first heard EVH JUST Eruption when I was 12 years old. My older bro's were buying new music and I listened for free. So anyway, I was just starting to play guitar and this blew my mind that someone could do what he did. Fast forward 25 years and I had my own burgeoning musician sons. One night I poped in the "Live Without a Net" video and blew THEIR MINDS with this same solo, great memories!
The smile on your face said it all. Eddie was the best ever guitarist ever or will ever be. The 5150 is in reference to a police code for a people who has lost the plot / gone crazy. The first bit of playing is called 316 which he wrote when his son was born. Eruption was his warm up before recording in the studio and got added to the first album. The tapping he mainly invented although some blues players did sort of tap before, Eddie took it to a whole new level. So many have copied Eddie but no one has come close. The song Cathedral is part of the solo and his timing using the volume control as a kill switch is 100% accurate to get the organ sound. He is even featured in Back To The Future. Anyone who knew about music cried the day he passed away. God Bless you Edward Van Halen and thank you for your music.
Eddie reinvented the guitar. Back in the club days on the sunset strip he’d face away from the crowd during solos so people didn’t know what he was doing and stole his tricks because him and Randy Rhoads were guitar rivals on the strip. Eddie was the most innovative and influential guitarist since Hendrix, those 2 primarily created the rock guitarists we know and see today. When Van Halen one came out no one ever heard a guitar sound like that before.. it was truly amazing
When you take his career into consideration, his playing ability, his God like composing skills, his innovation with not only playing the guitar, but to the instrument itself. No one did it better. We were all very lucky to live in a time when we could follow his career and see him preform live. RIP

@@kevinkarbonik2928 - I've heard people make those claims over the years... that Eddie said (X guitarist) was the best. And they always reference some article they read in a magazine 30 years ago, (which of course can't be verified).
As someone who bought the first Van Halen album right after it hit the shelves in 1978, and has been following them ever since... all I can say is that lots of interviewers have asked Ed that question, and he always dodges it by saying they are all great.
- Interviewer: “Who do you consider the greatest?”
- Eddie: “I think everybody is great really. It’s self-expression, I don’t think that anybody is better than anybody else.”
In a couple early interviews, he said his early inspiration when he was learning to play was Eric Clapton. But there are stories that once Ed became famous, Clapton snubbed him and refused to meet him.
@@Mr.Ekshin yeah... I heard about the Clapton thing too. But I personally read the Alex Lifeson thing, I was a player, a huge fan of Eddie and a huge Rush fan too, so it resonated with me, but I know what you mean.
Van Halen was my first concert when I was a kid. Diver Down tour in '82. I remember being absolutely mesmerized by the wizard guitarist up on the stage. He's been my favorite ever since! His passing hit me harder than anything else in my life up to this point. Literally cried for a week. RIP King Edward!

@@shamwow7996 Yeah, and Dimebag's death was so shocking. I'm guessing you probably know about Eddie putting his original "bumble bee" black and yellow Frankenstein guitar from VH 2 in Dime's casket.
We are talking about Ed Van Halen here, I read the man never put down his guitar, probably even slept with it. I'm pretty sure his fingers were on auto pilot. Music flows out of him, nothing to remember it's already In there. Definitely the GOAT! Eddie was a genius, classically trained on piano at a young age, self taught on guitar. Great Lex that you picked up on the piano/guitar thing. There will never be another one like him, I'm so glad I got to be alive in the time he was starting out, all that great music to grow up with. He's feeling Brad, I don't think it's a conscious thing, it just happens. Love you guys!

The best thing about Eddie was that while he was definitely a "flashy" guitar player he didn't so so needlessly, all his playing was super tasteful. Some people talk about being able to play really technical and stuff but not having "feel" Eddie was the whole package and also very unique at the same time.
One of the best guitarists of a generation or two, RIP EVH.

Eddie Van Halen didn't merely raise the bar...He IS the bar. He's responsible for so many teens picking up a guitar & learning how to play for the first time.
Some people can't even finds words to describe the kinds of emotions Eddie makes them experience but I have two words for that feeling: "Holy crap!"
He's played guitar so much that his finger calluses have calluses on their calluses...Even though he's gone way *past* the "bloody finger-stumps" stage I'd almost swear my own fingers bleed in just sheer sympathy.
Pure legend in the guitar and rock world! We wil always miss him and may never see anyone like him again. Always happy and full of energy and above all an amazing guitarist! RIP BROTHER
Eddie inspired me to buy my first guitar over 30 years ago. He's the reason I play guitar to this day. The greatest of all time. RIP Eddie.
I saw this show in Philly and the solo was somewhere in the middle of the show. A masterclass that Eddie made look so easy. All we could do was watch and pick our jaws up off the floor. Trust me; the crowd was lit for the entire concert, but this is when you stand, watch listen, and try to comprehend.
Watching the amazement is priceless.
This was Eddie "noodling around". Just little bits and snippets from intros and solos from everything he's ever recorded.....and then some.
Give a listen to "Eruption/You Really Got Me" from their debut album. You'll get an idea of what we all heard back in '78 ("Runnin' With The Devil" ain't no slouch either).
He changed the sound of rock guitar forever. One of my first guitar heroes.

I have my worn-out copy sitting in a frame, along with other vinyl from the same era, and hanging in my "dude room". I even have a ticket stub from that first tour (w/ Sabbath) tucked into the corner of the frame.
Didn't see the show (I was 12) but it's one of my favorite pieces of "memorabilia" in the room. That would have been an incredible show though.

"Guitar face" or whatever one wants to call it, is just a display of emotion just like one using their hands as they talk. Stevie Ray Vaughan had some of the best stank faces in the game.
I got to see King Edward three times in concert 81,83 and 2015! Thank you EVH!!! You're the greatest!
Don't know that Edward actually "invented" tapping but he was the 1st to use it as part of his style and made it a popular technique. The section Lex thought was Eruption was actually called Cathedral off their Diver Down album. EVH also made popular that technique of using the volume knob to soften the attack and fade in the notes (watch right hand during that part) In this overall solo he played all of eruption but pieces at a time in each section. He also incorporated Cathedral, Mean Street intro, and Spanish Fly which were all of his "solos" that made him Edward Van Halen. Hope this helps understand the structure of the solo. It was definitely not improvised but a structured showcase of his greatest hits so to speak....

Like Nuno Bettencourt, who uses fragments of solos and instrumentals from his songs and joined them in the "live guitar solo".
By the way, Edward was the pioneer in the use of 'two hands tapping'. Because, although there were already jazz guitarists who used 'tapping', it was very rudimentary, with just one note, that you can't even call it tapping, Edward played on the entire neck, on all the strings and applying it to the scale progression. Now that was "two hands tapping"!
I also hear some bits inspired by J.S. Bach in there (Tocatta and Fugue). I think maybe that's why Lex says it almost sounds classical. He sets up Eruption with some Classical music, and Eruption itself kind of follows the same structure/rhythm as Tocatta giving it a Classical feel. Around the 1:10 mark:

I’ve heard it called “guitar mouth.” The connection from the brain to the hands (and body) when focusing on playing distorts the mouth! -Terry
It's like when you see someone on handsfree phone having a conversation at a stoplight, waving their hands around when no one else is in the car. The hands and vocal regions of the brain are interconnected at least in some people.
Actually the open mouth is a technique to replace/or enhance in-ear monitors by bringing the sound in. If you find some early Allman Brothers with Dwayne Allman live, no in-ear back then and not even front stage monitors and he's just pulling in the sound.

Every time I video myself playing guitar I notice I'm making so many goofy faces but I don't even realize it while I'm playing. I feel like I'm just sitting there normally. I think our brains process the sound and cause us to create faces that would match them. Almost like a glitch of the brain 🧠

This 13 minute solo is a collection of snippets of many of his hits. He was basically putting on a guitar clinic in the solo sesh, showing off not only his style but his different innovations for how to play the guitar. EVH was a guitar innovator. Fun fact: he was drunk out of his mind this entire set. That "friendship" you saw with Sammy Hagar hugging him was Sammy lifting him up onto the speaker so he could play. Just think of what level of talent it takes to do 13 minutes of complicated and often improvised guitar playing when you aren't a drop sober. And that Eruption sounded like a piano...that was Eddie's original instrument. He didn't start on the guitar until later. But he more than mastered it. He transformed it.
The reason why Eddie is loved more than the other brilliant guitarists out there is that he plays with soul and fun in a way that is unique. And of course he makes the guitar strut.

Does get me too m8 - the fact he pulls off the whole octave drop in E( before one of the pauses :/ ) is astonishing as itts done with the whammy bar alone no digital effects unit or retune . The fact he messes with the tremelo springs & the damn thing stays in tune is also incredible . THATS BEFORE we get to the tapping section which is a lesson in fuck row row row your boat = play what you like what sounds good . Im incredulous to people who are unaware of the greatest man to hold this instrument since Jimi hendrix

@@DeltaElites I'm jealous, I saw David Lee Roth open for Kiss in 2020, and I remember thinking "This is sick, I got to see Van Halen at some point" and then not very long after Eddie died, so I'll never see them live but I guess that's ok.

The first time I ever heard the “cathedral” portion of this solo… I was mesmerized. I still can’t figure out how he did it when I try it on my own. Truly the god of innovation 😭
He used volume swells with delay... Notice where his right hand is... On his volume quick knob, up and down in perfect timing with his fret hand.

People who never played will never understand pick work I played a little bit back in the day and I could barely do a simple squeal harmonic with any consistancy, my friend who I watched tried to teach me he could do all kind of cool stuff, picking is harder than it looks.
At about nine minutes in you asked, "Did he just retune it?" No. He keeps the tremolo cover on the back of the guitar off so he can reach in and pluck those tremolo springs. Combined with delay and some volume swells and dissonance it sounds fantastic. And you're right about his face. That is "guitar face" and we get it because we are mouthing the notes and singing them in our heads as we play.

Van Halen was the first live show I ever saw. I was 17 years old 5th row on the floor. Saw this from 20 feet away. Blew my mind in 1992 or 1993. Balance tour.
Neil Peart's drum solo in Frankfurt, Germany is the coolest drum solo I've ever seen. Hopefully you both will watch it one of these days. By the way, he's the drummer of Rush.
His older solos were much more interesting IMHO but yeah, he was something else. Buddy Rich also, ridiculous drum solos.
Neil was the GOAT RIP. I was lucky enough to see RUSH live 3 times. I’ve also now seen TOOL live 3 times and Danny Carey is now the GOAT of drummers. In many ways Danny embodies everything that Neil brought to drumming much like Eddie brought to guitar playing. Inventive and inspirational playing for the generations to come. There is a Danny Carey Drum Cam video that is next level and shows why Danny is called the human octopus.

Seen vh and evh so many times, and every time you’d see Eddie do his solo, right after he was done, you felt like your team just won the Super Bowl.

It’s insane to know that he started out playing the drums, and his brother Alex started out playing guitar...so glad they decided to switch instruments when they were kids...Alex said that Eddie was better at playing guitar than he was, so they just kept the switch in place and the rest is history and a blessing to musicians everywhere!
They both started out training to be concert pianists. They didn't start using rock instruments until they were teenagers.
And Eddie never learned to read music. He in an interview stated he played by ear and improvised.
This was a compilation of most of his guitar solos from Spanish Fly, to Cathedral, but surrounded by Eruption. His opening solo piece I think is the only one created AFTER DLR left the band in 1984, so 90% of it he had been playing since as far back as 1972 when he first created the "brown" sound (based on brown-out aka low voltage)
Saw Eddie play many live solos since VH’s first tour in 1978 to the end. This solo was mid show. If you listen close, Eddie was already starting the next song. I Only met Eddie once, great guy as are Alex, Mike and Sammy. Eddie never learned to read music so he created it, a legendary genius. RIP brother 🎸❤️
He just took us on a long walk down virtuoso lane. Whenever I need to be exposed to greatness, I put in my EVH cds RIP Eddie thank you for the music. I still get emotional after 42 years of listening. Great reaction
