I'm sad to say that I just stumbled on to Ensemble Hesperi, I wish I had known of them earlier, but as they say better late than... Wonderful music and wonderful execution.
Polwart on the green, in each of the two sources you have conflated, is clearly marked Andante (and is probably to be played in Oswald's other favourite adjectival style, Affettuoso). I was told by David Munrow, some 50 years ago, that just because harmonies are simple, that is no excuse to increase the tempo, thereby creating, in the immortal words of William Kimber, the chief informant of the Morris revival, c. 1910, "plenty of brisk but no interest". It is therefore disconcerting to see you resort to the "weren't they quaint in them days" thigh-slapping style that you have, without justification, adopted.
Meravigliosi!!! ❤
