I came here to check out some DJ tips and was very flattered to hear Carlo using my music as his intro/outro music for the video - Thank you Kanye, very cool!
I just wanted to add to this. The spinback is loud and ear piercing especially on Serato DJ (and including Scratch Live) due to the way the scratch algorithm was designed. This is why scratching acapellas or anthing with high frequencies can sometimes be uncomfortable to the listener. Unlike on vinyl where the higher frequencies naturally filter themselves out due to the limitations of the cartridge and stylus. I personally have to lower my treble knob and sometimes volume to scratch on Serato. With that said, Serato seems to be the only software that doesn't address this filtering of high frequencies. When you spinback or scratch on Traktor, it isn't as unpleasant. On Rekordbox DJ, you can clearly hear there is a different algorithm going on. It's not perfect, but it's almost like the higher frequencies lower in volume so they don't hurt to listen to. This is also consistent on Pioneer CDJs since the CDJ-1000. That's why spinbacks and scratching on other software as well as Pioneer gear require an active watch on the volume and treble.
All the way from the Caribbean islands of Dominica I don't know if you will see this comment but I'm really thankful for guys like you on TH-cam teaching us how to become better DJs I'm a big fan btw.. love your work keep it up !
Use crossfader instead of the volume. It transitions each deck from high to low or from low to high. Also cut some of the bass from the newly played song. This makes the best mix and transition. PRO DJ TIP.
I'm not a DJ at all but I've watched enough old school hip hop DJ's to know that the crossfader is one of the most important tools in scratching and transitioning
I love the backspin. Bringing in the new song which has a very nice breakdown coming up. Backspin the current song out while new song breaks down hell yeah. I don't backspin like you though. I just spin it back without my hand staying on the jog wheel
Pri Yon Joni noticed that in comparison with Serato, Rekordbox filters off the upper band when scratching. Also, I would like to backspin when you need to "interrupt", either for introducing new genre or if you're about to MC. Backspins are rather obvious "flow breaker" transitions.
A well placed back spin can set the crowd off or add a certain flair to the mix. However it should be employed sparingly, as some have stated here in the comments that it (and I agree) can sound extremely amateurish. But like I said, a well placed back spin can sound killer.
I have tried before to backspin - it sounded very unpleasing. I will now try to experiment using your tips! Looks like it taks some practice to get the correct gesture/hand speed before you produce the correct backspin/stopping sound. Thanks for sharing!
Wow another Pro Tip from Master again really really awesome..can't wait to try out xD...mann this is dope its a lot cleaner to transition even better...thanks again always awesome content from my Master...xD

Great Video! I like to transition with the filters cutting the highs and lows, backspin is also cool! You know how to scratch like them pros on the Vinyl Technics but on the pioneer controller??? Id love to see a vid on that thanks bro!
Hey Carlo! I just got an SB3 a week ago and I'm having the time of my life. Can I request a live mix of you using the SB3 with a camera angle directly so we can see what you're doing? Cheers. Great content.
to this day, i have YET to hear any type of digital equipment sound as good with the backspin as vinyl. back in the day we had no choice but to use backspin a lot. we didn't have all these effects, but it just still sounded better on vinyl the closest i've seen is the rane 12's and the ddj 1000. they both come pretty close
It’s all in the algorithm. Serato users need to request that Serato improve that. On vinyl, records naturally filter out because of the frequency limitations of the cartridge and stylus. Pioneer CDJ-1000s and CDJs since have been really good about having an algorithm that filters out those harsh frequencies. The reason the DDJ-1000 sounds good is because this filtering is applied to Rekordbox DJ. Anyone who scratches and has compared Rekordbox to Serato have noticed a clear difference in the sound of both software. Traktor is also pretty good as well. The problem is not digital. The problem is Serato.
i see this mixing technique as a way out after you've messed a mix up, not a technique id be bigging up, im just a person on the internet you have 47k subscribers no way was this an insult just my opinion btw :)
Nothing wrong with back spinning. Especially if it’s a really emotional set. Or hard style, it makes the crowd go coco for coco puffs. Thank you for the demo bro I’m doing transition practice today at this minute decided to hear some videos and learn something new. I don’t wanna think I know it all. Blessings bro GreyTheGhost
Jup. Only when the mix suddenly starts fcking with bpm changes in a track. Backspinning is a way to fix the fck-up. . Anything else should be avoided. Sounds like a beginner DJ ..

Carlo, you don't seem to mention in the video example that you ARE using EQ to fade the bass out of the existing whilst bringing in the new track in just before you do the back spin?!!

As a House DJ, backspins are done when you were not able to transition the mix properly or the track is close to the end.
Use crossfader instead of the volume. It transitions each deck from high to low or from low to high. Also cut some of the bass from the newly played song. This makes the best mix and transition. PRO DJ TIP.

Thanks Dj Carlo for your clean tips & Nice hair cut 👌🤘
thanks for all the details that you provide. the 4-8 beats before transition was really helpful
Great to hear! Glad I was helpful!
does that mean we need to backspin 4-8 beats on the 1st deck to transition to the 2nd deck?

I always just assumed that ppl would backspin when they couldn’t figure out how to beat match.
Also, imagine somebody did this on every transition?
I only use it when I have to put two songs up against each other who's bpm is too different to match
“Didnt that sound better?”
No
thank you boss

Your videos are slick man, and yes i agree, more effort is needed to make transitions pop for the crowd, but don't diss the EQ man! :)

id add an echo effect over the back spin so it echo overs the beat of the next song and gradually fades to nothing
