I like the thorough instructions Jennifer gives as she works step by step on each project. Even though I’ve been sewing since I was a young girl, I have picked up on some new techniques allowing shortcuts in the process of making various projects. When I see a video I like, I share it to my own email address, then create a folder for the website, making it easy to go back to. I watch various sewing videos, but I enjoy Jennifer above all others.
Thank you, Jennifer. You’re great!!
Thank you for your very kind words. We are glad you've been enjoying these tutorials. Thanks for watching! 💖 -Michelle
Hi Jennifer,I can't begin to tell you how much I loved the magic pillow case tutorial.jelly roll, and the custom made pajamas. You do such beautiful work.Thank you for sharing your down loads.
Thank you! We love making fun projects! Happy Holidays! ❄
I've watched a lot of *tote tutorials* and this bag, by far, is the cutest! Instructions are well explained, easy to follow and assembly seems a lot less involved than the others. Will definitely try this (at least once!)
That is so awesome to hear Frances Nolan! Thank you so, so much for taking the time to watch our video and to leave this kind comment!
Oh my I love your tutorials, you are so easy to understand and easy to follow along. Thank you for taking the time to make these wonderful tutorials for your followers. You have awesome projects, beautiful!!!!! I am a beginner sewer and you make it so easy.
So happy to hear that this was easy to follow and that you like our videos! Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment!
I have got the perfect jelly roll and fabric to go along with this to make gifts for my mother, two aunts and myself! Thank you for the wonderful tutorial, I can't wait to get started!
Yay! Don't you love it when you have the perfect fabric for a project?!
Hi Jennifer. Great clear tutorial. I made a template for the bag following your measurements and cut the fabric on the fold. I added a large patch pocket to the lining sewn down to make two unequal pockets. I also decided to use the other method of sewing the lining (one bag inside the other) so I didn't have to fiddle with turning the top. I used a heavy calico for the main bag. It looks fab! Thank you for this stylish but simple tote. Two more to make and then they will all be filled with baby goodies possibly a changing mat/nappy holder. There are so many wonderful ideas out there in the youtube community. Thank you to everyone who posts.
That is so great to hear Ornella Day! We truly appreciate you taking the time to watch our tutorial and to make your own tote! Your design sounds very cute and will be so, so useful!
Ornella, I too chose to use the other option for the lining ( this one just looked too finicky arthritis hands and fingers, lol and not quite strong enough for my busy life......But I loved loved the layered strips, wonderful touch....
I'm making these as Christmas gifts this year, I love them....I will most likely make myself one too! I'm a beginner/intermediate sewer, so the very detailed directions you give is SO helpful. Thank you for making this a fun and challenging project, I'm sure the gifts will be very well received!
That is such a kind gift idea +Nicole Alessi! It is so good to keep pushing yourself and learning new skills as a beginner/intermediate sewer! That's how we grow and become better. Thank you so much for watching!

I made my first Jelly Roll bag last weekend. I am so pleased with it. My work colleagues loved it. They were so impressed that I made it myself! Thank you for such a lovely and easy tutorial Jennifer. I look forward to making my next one. Jennifer day.😃🙌👏👍👌❤️
+Jennifer Day isn't it so fun to show of your creations to friends! So happy you were inspired to create a bag of your own!
Loving the pink sewing machine!
Thank you so much +Jennifer Lyons!
So cute! Now I have to try one! Or maybe several! I feel like these would be such great gifts - or even for bags for the gifts! Like a double gift! Many thanks!
We're glad you enjoy this tote project!! Thank you for watching!! 💖 -Michelle
I had so much fun making this!! my only creativity, I used strips sewn together to make some deep pockets for the inside!!

Again thanks for your tutorial. I haven't done a bag before so hopefully this summer I will make a couple.
We're very happy this project has inspired you! We're looking forward to your project photos. Thank you very much for watching!!! 💖 -Michelle
I have already made two and have 4 more to go. Great Christmas presents. It only takes a couple hours to make one. Thank you.
Wow you have been busy +Dria Knutson! So glad you have been loving this project!
I watched this tutorial this morning after seeing a couple of Daysail bags out on Instagram over the weekend. While I love the bag and I will be making it, it needs interfacing and a fusible fleece or batting AND a pocket on the inside. I've made lots of totes over the years so I can modify the existing instructions. Now I just need to decide if I need to make a bunch for Christmas gifts!
Interfacing and a pocket would really take this bag to the next level JenWith! Thank you so much for sharing those great tips with us and for taking the time to watch our tutorial!
You make such beautiful items. I am a new sewer/ quilter and I love your channel
We're so happy these fun projects inspire you! Thanks so much for watching! -Michelle

Such a wonderful video! I really appreciate it as I didn't realize why my first attempt making a similar bag shifted. The effort put into your tutorial makes me so grateful.
+Rachelle Moser thank you so much for your kind words!
Beautiful bag , love the design on it .
Thank you so much +Marie Sunz!
I am in love with the pink sewing machine.
Thank you! We love it too! ~Leah🙃
Thank you!! I found your site an it helped me with a big decision. I Have 2 grandchildren in high school and every year each class makes up four Thanksgiving baskets for needy families. I have made something special each year to go in with the food items. I like to make something different each year. Being it is their senior year I was stumped as what to make!! When I found your site I found what I want to do!! The 10 minute table runner is great!! Because it is so fast and affordable to make I am going to make a fall and Christmas one for each basket! Then I saw the fat quarters apron!! I think I have figured out a way to make it reversible so it too can be for both seasons! I will continue to make things for these baskets even after my kids graduate so I will definitely be watching you for more great ideas!! Thank you, Thank you!!!! These baskets are delivered by taxi so the kids don't know who receives them and neighbors don't know why they're getting them!!😊🦃🎄
What an amazing way to give back +Vickie Ebert! Creating things for charitable causes is so special because so much love goes into each item! So glad you were able to find projects that meet your needs and thank you for being a member of Team Shabby!
Thank you! Wonderful and helpful video ❤
Happy that you enjoyed this video and that it was helpful to you! We appreciate your comment! ❤️ - Abby
I see that I commented on this two years ago! Hard to believe it's been that long! Anyway, I just bought a jelly roll of fabrics that I love and was thinking about what to use it for when this video popped up. Voila! Just need to get a yard of background/lining fabric and I'll get started. Thanks again.
So happy to see you are back and still on track to make one of these bags!! Thanks for commenting and checking in :)
Cutest bag ever.

omg, your baby pink featherweight (?) singer is sooooooooooooooo adorable
You are correct- it is a 1939 Singer Featherweight :)
how lovely thank you for showing how to make the beautiful bag x
Thank you so much for watching!
Excellent tutorial, explaining if you are using contrasting fabric. Also the reason for only ironing the bottom of main fabric seam due to bulk. The pin from beginning then the end and work to the middle. I have had to re-pin a thousand times with the reasoning not never making sense until you explained that.
That is awesome to hear! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
her comments as she works are so helpful -- a pro & great with tutorials.
So glad you find them helpful, and thank you for watching! - Morgan
Beautiful tote. Thank you.
Glad you like it! Thank you for watching!! 💖 -Michelle

So glad to hear that this tutorial was is easy to follow Dory Koszewski, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
I like the design of this bag and will make at least one, but I will add some batting or foam to give it some body.
That is a great idea Phyllis B! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch our tutorial- you will have so much fun making this tote!
I'm with you on this one. Otherwise, I'd have a limp bag on my hands. I prefer to have "body" too!
I've made about a dozen of these. I use soft and stable batting to give it shape. They have been a real hit.

So happy you like the bag, Ursula! Thanks for watching!
Love this bag. Will watch again and write down the measurements for the cutting. Have tons of 2 1/2" scraps to use. Will use the new Bonsal iron on foam batting on the outside of the bag... and may even put a zipper on the top opening......
You will have so much fun making this bag susan chase! Thank you for watching!
+susan chase I was thinking the same thing to give it a bit more body. I love the look of the fabrics on the front as well as the rosettes!

Thank you for watching +Helen Holman!
Hi Jennifer, I wonder if I might share a top tip for anyone contemplating making this bag. I am mid-way making the second of three and I have found that using clover clips to anchor the strips at the ends and using just two pins placed horizontally, means that I didn't need to re-position any of the strips but I just double-checked the measurements for peace of mind. I also used my machines' s extension table for extra stability whilst sewing. This worked a charm, got the strips sewn down far more quickly than with my first bag. Thank you again for the tutorial.
What a great tip Ornella Day, thank you so much for sharing that with us! We love wonder clips and have them available in pink to benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Clover-Wonder-Clips-Limited-Edition-Breast-Cancer-Pink--P36239.aspx
I will try to do this tote bag for my 3rd project 😊

Do you ever talk about your different sewing machines in any videos you've made? I love this pretty pale pink one! I have my sewing machine from the 70's!! It's so beautiful!

Thank you so much for the information !
Thank you for watching!
What do you think of ironing fusible fleece to either the outside of the bag before sewing on the jelly strips or on the lining piece for extra stability? I'm rough on bags and I want to make it a bit stronger!
That would absolutely work!
Thank u very much pls tel me how buy that ruler and febric
your machine is so cute!!!
Thank you! It is a 1939 Singer Featherweight that has been refurbished!
Nice tote
Glad you like it! -Michelle
i love this..
Thank you so much for the love Lynnae Clark !
I have been following you and find your methods of teaching very clear. This is the most important aspect. I adore your pink sewing machine. Is it possible for you to point me in the right direction to acquire one just like it? I love this tutorial and the bag is quite stylish.
Thank you so much for your kind words! This 1939 Singer Featherweight sewing machine is one that was restored and painted by DeskDave.com! He has a whole rainbow of machines available, too!

Thank you.
Love your pink feather-weight.
Thank you! It's such a fun machine! Jen had it powder coated in that pink color and it's our favorite! - Morgan
Love this tutorial.. You could also put the strips on the back of the bag also? Also love the little pink machine.. Would love to have one of these to use for my quilting classes I go to..
+Trudy Thomas yes, you could absolutely continue the strips onto the back!
Love your tutorials as your voice is soft and slower than some other instructors. Good for seniors who are a little slower. I call you the Queen of Pins. Do you not use Wonder Clips anymore or are the clips only a quilting.
Keep up the good work
Joy
So happy to have the title "Queen of Pins" because you can never be too careful! We love Wonder Clips but this video was made before we discovered them! Also, sometimes of smaller projects we just prefer to pin if there aren't a bunch of layers.
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words, Joy!
Awesome
Thank you!
OMG this fun and easy
Isn't it?! Projects like these make you never want to leave the sewing room. : ) -Kyla
What is that beautiful red solid you are using? This bag is wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
The red is "Betty's Red" and it is a Bella Solid by Moda Fabrics +Peggy Taylor! Here is a link to it: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Bella-Solids-9900-123-Bettys-Red-by-Moda-Fabrics-P31654.aspx?categoryid=129

awesome awesome
Thank you +Sylvia Brown!
Great tutorial! Thank you.,
Thank you so much!
I think I would sew the roses on the outside of the bag before assembling the bag.
Thanks for sharing that tip with us. That could definitely work! Thanks for watching! - Morgan
Lovely video. One question is I notice your bags on shelf behind you are standing up but the bag you made has no interfacing so how are they standing ?
Hi Joan! We use stuffing to make our bags stand up on set! Thank you for watching! - Sophie
Love this bag and would really like to make one to hold my camera. How wide is the base of the tote? Suggestions on how to alter the pattern to make the base 5 inches so that it can fit my protective slide in pouch that is 5" w x 14" l x 7.5" h.
The bag is ABOUT 15"x3" inches at the base. The adjust the base, you would adjust the boxed corners to be 5". So when, you are measuring for the boxed corners you would measure over 2.5" over from the middle instead of 1.5". In order to account for the seam allowance you may want to measure over 3" from the middle mark. She explains the boxed corners at 3:30 so you can reference what I am talking about.
Love these totes. I am getting ready to purchase the fabric but I am not sure what main fabric you used on the green bag. Was it a Bella Solid fabric?
+bcallahan48 Thank you for the love! Unfortunately, we can't perfectly identify which solid we used but here are links to two that are VERY close to the original:

That is the Daysail collection from Moda. Unfortunately, the Jelly Rolls are sold out, but we do have a green fat quarter set left and you can cut them down into 2.5" strips!

Thank you for watching and learning along with us!
Love your sewing machine where you bought? And what kind? Not to mention lovely color 😊i love pink, my favorite color🙂
Thanks
JollyRose143
This is a Singer Featherweight that has been restored! Check out deskdave.com/Cornucopia.htm and look at all of his colors! Jen's machine is Rose Petal Pink
Very nice detailed instructions. I like that you are very precise . I would like little more firmness by adding fusing. So how can I do it? At what point should I add on?
+jm2ube1 fusible interfacing can be added to the main body fabric before any cutting out the notches from the side and sewing on the strips. You will cut a piece of interfacing to the size of the main body fabric, iron it on according to the directions, then assemble the rest of the bag as instructed. You may find that you have some additional bulkiness due to the interfacing but it shouldn't be too big of an issue.
