  • Welcome to Pursuit Perfect System, here we have some HiFi Porn for you.
We had a great Listening Session with the Amazing Marten Bird 2 Speakers and the Bowers and Wilkins 800 D3 Diamond.
    THIS IS DEMO NUMBER 3
If that wasnt enough we got to listen to the Chord Dave Dac with the Chord Blu MK2 M Scaler and the SPM 1400 Monoblock Amplifiers
I played the same Track Making Love After Hours from Soul Jazz a Stateside Collection through the system on both speakers so you can hear the differences.

The midrange sounds fuller on the B&W Click on 0:20 sec then on 5:40 sec and you'll hear the difference quite easily. :)

Amazing! B&W 800 D3 easily wins here. Way more clarity and midrange and even bass, which B&W usually don't tend to have. Either Marten Bird 2 are shitty speakers or B&W 800 D3 are just amazing!

Hei, I finally read your written review. It was not surprising that you wrote that B&W sounded too forward in the midrange and treble and too light on the bass. I wrote that in my first comment already but didn't notice the lacking, probably because I'm listening to this via my speakers on the computer. B&W are well known for not having enough bass, and I don't like that kind of sound. It is mindboggeling to me that high-end speakers sound so 'thin' yet they are always praised by the hi-fi media and win all these awards all the time.
I was really eager to buy either B&W 800 D3 or 802 D3 because they look so damn sexy. I want to have these in my livingroom. Bt not if I don't get enough bass. I don't want a sub because I feel hi-end hi-fi should be listened through two full-range speakers only.
First I thought there wasn't enough power to drive the 800 D3 properly as they demand a lot of watts and current, but then I saw they were driven by monoblock amps. That should be enough. I have Gryphon Diablo 300 integrated amplifier which is amazing and have 300W @ 8 ohm, doubling to 600W @ 4 ohm, and 950W @ 2 ohm. Still I don't think that is enough for the 800 D3. What do you think? Do you think the Diablo 300 will suit better with the 802 D3 which is smaller and probably easier driven?

Hi Mate - bass is an interesting one - I think its a case of taking an active approach and measuring the output of the speakers in the listening room with REW or similar - then taking action to have the sound follow a target frequency curve to taste such as you do in systems like Dirac Live. If that is the way forward then all speakers should technically have enough bass - but I have noticed different equipment have different amounts of perceived bass based on how clean the signal is, and speakers the same obviously.
Its not an easy one to say outright for any given situation.
In this demo the Martens seemed spot on the 800's sounded like they needed moving and altering of the presentation to my taste.
Gryphon are supposed to be S**t hot amps but I have never heard one so cant comment to help you there.
When your spending this much money I think you need to take the Gryphon to a dealer who has the speakers so you can try them. I dont know if you are UK based but Nintronics in Hertfordshire do have all the B&W's to demo so an organised trip there would be worthwhile effort - you want to get this one right.
Maybe you will prefer the Martens as well - its worth hearing them at the same time - looks are important but its got to be sound first :) Thanks for the message and support. let me know if I can help any more

Oh yeah, the Diablo 300 does get really, really hot. It's like a heater! But man does it sound good. And it has so much power. Yet probably not enough to drive B&W 800 D3 well. I live in Norway though, so I think I'll go to my local dealer and make them set up 802 D3 for me. I'll bring the Diablo 300.

Hi Peter I have been so busy, I am happy with it for Movies, and can review that aspect I need to listen to more music on it. I also need to figure out the kwirks with the Dirac Live Integration. Sorry for the delay I will do it asap

All the instruments sound much more clear and like real instruments via the B&W, not even close, to me. As to the complaints about bass, I'm not sure this track has much deep bass content anyway, as I am listening on speakers that go down to 22Hz and I don't hear much bass from either set of speakers.

The B&W sounds kind of shouty. On the other demo, Clapton's voice sounded more natural on the Martens.

Loads more going on with the B&W s sounds like a band more spacious . Not as punchy but that punch on the others gets a bit tiresome . But I am listening on headphones so what do I know :)
